Hadi stepping down would cause only minor disruption in PAS, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: PAS may experience only a brief period of instability if its president Abdul Hadi Awang were to step down, a political analyst says in response to growing speculation over the party's top leadership. Syaza Shukri said that any successor to Hadi might need some time to gain the full support of members, given the Marang MP's strong charisma and leadership of PAS since 2003, following the death of Fadzil Noor. Advertisement 'I believe that if Hadi is replaced by a trusted figure within the party such as Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man or Takiyuddin Hassan, there won't be major issues, and the party's stability can likely be maintained, especially with the backing of its Dewan Ulama and Syura Council. 'The new leader would need time to build confidence among members and establish legitimacy,' the International Islamic University Malaysia academic told FMT. Last week, Sinar Harian reported that Hadi had hinted at stepping down due to health reasons. It is understood that he expressed this intention to senior party leaders at a recent retreat in Terengganu. The development fuelled speculation on the positions of the PAS president and deputy president ahead of the party's internal election, expected in September. Advertisement Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik claimed there had been calls for Hadi to relinquish the top post, although this was denied by state-level leaders. Johor PAS Youth chief Ahmad Nawfal Mahfodz alleged that such efforts stemmed from external parties who were unhappy with PAS's performance under Hadi's leadership. However, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the pressure was coming from within the party as well, as some factions wanted to see PAS emerge as a stronger entity. He also acknowledged the presence of 'quiet movements' signalling the possible need for a change in leadership. 'That's why the ulama faction insists that the party's top two positions must continue to be held by religious scholars. 'But the pressure from the professionals seems more pronounced right now, because there's a sense that PAS needs reform,' he said. Azmi added that while PAS members were known for their loyalty to the party's leadership, many believed that change was necessary, albeit voluntary change and not through force. 'That's why there's a quiet, indirect movement to signal to Hadi that change is needed. External parties behind push for Hadi to step down, say PAS leaders
Abdul Hadi Awang, a seven-term MP for Marang, has been president of PAS since June 2002. PETALING JAYA : Two PAS leaders have dismissed claims that there is a push within the party for its long-time president, Abdul Hadi Awang, to relinquish the post at the party elections in September. Johor PAS Youth chief Ahmad Nawfal Mahfodz claimed that such a call had never been raised at neither the state nor central leadership level. 'Clearly this push is coming from outside PAS. It's evident that some parties are uneasy with the performance of PAS under Hadi's leadership,' he told FMT. Terengganu PAS leader Hanafiah Mat also said calls for Hadi not to defend the PAS presidency came from outside the party, and not among its members or supporters. 'Although his health is not that great right now, he is mentally sharper than others,' he said. Speculation has emerged that, for the first time in a decade, the posts of PAS president and deputy president might be contested at the party elections in September. The last time the top two posts were contested was in 2015 when Hadi defeated Ahmad Awang for the president's post, and Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man ousted Mohamad Sabu for the deputy presidency. Hadi is a seven-term MP for Marang and a former Terengganu menteri besar. Sinar Harian recently reported that Hadi had conveyed his intention to relinquish the post at a PAS top leadership retreat, citing health reasons. Hadi has suffered declining health in recent years, undergoing dialysis and being admitted to hospital several times. Hanafiah said the party still needed Hadi at the helm, citing his commanding support from the grassroots to the top leadership levels. The Chukai assemblyman also believes Hadi can lead the Islamic party to even greater success at the polls, after its best-ever haul of 43 parliamentary seats in the 2022 general election. 'I'm confident that 'Tok Guru' can lead us towards winning more than 70 parliamentary seats and, God-willing, we will govern Malaysia,' he said.

PAS prepares for leadership change as Hadi signals exit
PAS leader Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang's hint at retiring as president has sparked big questions about his successor. Ilham Centre CEO Hisommudin Bakar is of the view that a potential exit of Hadi from the Islamic party will be a major turning point in PAS's modern history, according to Sinar Harian. Meanwhile, it appears that the ulama faction is pushing for a smooth, stable power transition. Remarks from PAS' Mokhtar Senik and Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah suggest PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as the next president, avoiding upheaval. This will also avoid non-ulama candidates like Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar gaining an upper hand in the party. The Ilham Centre sees this as a move to ease grassroots acceptance, possibly positioning Hadi as PAS Mursyidul Am, following the late Tan Sri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat. The choice of successor in PAS will also depend on delegates but indications are that the ulama camp favours Tuan Ibrahim as party leader and Mohd Amar could rise to deputy president. In April, Mohd Amar said that there is no internal conflict or tension among the party's leadership, despite ongoing speculation, including about his nomination at this year's PAS Muktamar (general assembly). He said the matter of candidacy is the party's prerogative, and he is not concerned if he is not nominated in the upcoming party election. Analysts however said the hints from Hadi are a warning for the party grassroots to prepare for change, as they are learning from PKR's divisive elections. Hadi has reportedly signalled his intention to step down from his position due to health concerns. The Marang MP is said to have conveyed this to the party's top leadership during a retreat in Terengganu last weekend. Sources said the disclosure has triggered internal discussions within the party's ulama (religious scholars) faction, which is now actively encouraging Tuan Ibrahim to assume the leadership role. — June 7, 2025

Iraqi director Hasan Hadi has won the People's Choice audience award at the second edition of the Cannes Directors' Fortnight for his debut feature The President's Cake. The award, the only audience-voted prize among the Cannes Official Selection and its parallel sections, marks a major international recognition for Hadi and a powerful moment for Iraqi cinema. Based in New York, Hadi drew from his own childhood experiences growing up in southern Iraq during the 1990s, under the regime of Saddam Hussein and the harsh conditions imposed by international sanctions. His film tells the story of Lamia, a nine-year-old girl tasked with bringing a birthday cake to school to celebrate the president's birthday—a seemingly simple mission that becomes a daunting struggle for survival in a time of extreme scarcity. The consequences of failure could be devastating for her and her family. Produced by Leah Chen Baker under the New York-based banner TPC Film LLC, The President's Cake is being sold internationally by Films Boutique, while UTA is handling distribution in North America. The Directors' Fortnight, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival known for its focus on bold and independent filmmaking, does not use a traditional jury system. Instead, the People's Choice award, which includes a €7,500 ($8,400) cash prize, is determined entirely by audience votes. The award was established last year in partnership with the Chantal Akerman Foundation to honor the legacy of the late Belgian filmmaker, whose groundbreaking works such as Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles were closely tied to the spirit of the Fortnight.
