Sony Pictures Classics acquires rights to Iraqi film ‘The President's Cake'

The film is made in association with Missing Piece Films, Working Barn Productions, Maiden Voyage Pictures and Spark Features.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all rights in North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and India for Cannes Caméra d'Or winner The President's Cake by Iraqi director Hasan Hadi.
Iraqi director Hasan Hadi has won the People's Choice audience award at the second edition of the Cannes Directors' Fortnight for his debut feature The President's Cake. The award, the only audience-voted prize among the Cannes Official Selection and its parallel sections, marks a major international recognition for Hadi and a powerful moment for Iraqi cinema.
Based in New York, Hadi drew from his own childhood experiences growing up in southern Iraq during the 1990s, under the regime of Saddam Hussein and the harsh conditions imposed by international sanctions. His film tells the story of Lamia, a nine-year-old girl tasked with bringing a birthday cake to school to celebrate the president's birthday—a seemingly simple mission that becomes a daunting struggle for survival in a time of extreme scarcity. The consequences of failure could be devastating for her and her family.
Produced by Leah Chen Baker under the New York-based banner TPC Film LLC, The President's Cake is being sold internationally by Films Boutique, while UTA is handling distribution in North America.
The Directors' Fortnight, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival known for its focus on bold and independent filmmaking, does not use a traditional jury system. Instead, the People's Choice award, which includes a €7,500 ($8,400) cash prize, is determined entirely by audience votes. The award was established last year in partnership with the Chantal Akerman Foundation to honor the legacy of the late Belgian filmmaker, whose groundbreaking works such as Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles were closely tied to the spirit of the Fortnight.

Lyrical documentary ‘From Abdul to Leila' to screen in Berlin

The film traces Leila, a French-Iraqi woman, who after an accident and years in exile, reconnects with her dissident father by learning Arabic and singing her story. French-Iraqi musician and filmmaker Leila Albayaty will present her lyrical documentary From Abdul to Leila at a special screening in Berlin on July 22 at 7 PM, hosted at Divan (Arabic Kulturhaus). The event will be followed by an exclusive Q&A session with the director herself. The deeply personal film traces Albayaty's search for her lost Arabic identity, a journey set in motion by music passed down from her Iraqi father, Abdul. After surviving a traumatic accident that left her with memory loss and enduring years of exile, Leila returns to her family home in the south of France. There, she confronts both her father's past, marked by the Iraq war, and her own fragmented identity. Determined to understand where she comes from, she begins learning Arabic and sets to music the poems Abdul once wrote for her. Through this act of artistic and linguistic reconnection, long-buried memories begin to resurface. From Abdul to Leila follows the emotional and physical odyssey of a woman who reclaims her story through music. As Leila travels from France to Iraq and Cairo, the narrative unfolds through intimate moments, blending documentary realism with poetic musicality. The film reveals her evolving relationship with her father, her struggle to overcome personal trauma, and her growing love for the Arabic language and culture. The documentary has already received critical acclaim, winning the Best Documentary Award at the Arab Film Festival Rotterdam and the Annual Aarhus Film Festival in Denmark, along with the Grand Jury Prize at the Tetouan Mediterranean Film Festival. The film was made possible with support from several cultural institutions, including Die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien (BKM), the Centre du cinéma et de l'audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the Doha Film Institute, Filmkunstering, the Goethe Institute of Cairo, and the French Institute of Tunis. It also participated in prominent industry platforms such as the Dubaï Film Connection, Sarajevo Cinelink Work in Progress and Medimed Barcelona. From Abdul to Leila is not only a rediscovery of heritage but a powerful reflection on family, memory, displacement, and the healing power of music.

Red Sea Film Foundation-backed films to premiere at Locarno Film Festival

The Red Sea Film Foundation supported these projects through its Red Sea Fund and Red Sea Souk initiatives. The 78th Locarno Film Festival, which will take place from August 6 to 16, 2025, has selected three films supported by the Red Sea Film Foundation. The selected titles, Irkalla – Gilgamesh's Dream by Iraqi director Mohamed Al-Daradji, Becoming by Kazakh filmmaker Zhannat Alshanova and Exile by Tunisian director Mehdi Hmili, showcase bold storytelling from emerging voices across the Arab world and beyond. Each film received backing through the Red Sea Fund or the Red Sea Souk, initiatives created by the foundation to foster innovative, diverse narratives in global cinema. Irkalla – Gilgamesh's Dream reimagines the ancient Mesopotamian epic through a modern lens, following a diabetic street child who urges his fierce companion Gilgamesh to take him to the mythical underworld, Arkala. Becoming explores themes of identity and self-discovery in contemporary Kazakhstan, tracing a young woman's struggle for independence under the direction of London-based filmmaker Alshanova. In Exile, Hmili paints a haunting picture of grief and resilience set inside Tunisia's largest steel factory, where four workers grappling with physical and mental trauma are bound together by the mysterious disappearance of a colleague. The Red Sea Film Foundation said that they are proud in supporting these projects and hailed their inclusion at Locarno as a major achievement for regional cinema and emerging talent.
