Groomer and rapist Peter John Hartley out of prison, but under supervision on an ankle bracelet in Taranaki

There were six young victims between 1997 and 2008. The Parole Board said the rape offence was 'especially humiliating'. Hartley, who had served a previous sentence for sexual offending in the 1990s, was initially given an open-ended prison sentence of preventive detention in 2012, but that was reduced on appeal to 14 years. He left prison in August last year after serving his full term, but was then placed on an interim supervision order imposed by the High Court. In April this year, he was placed under a 10-year extended supervision order (ESO). Such orders are used to supervise people considered high-risk following their release from prison. Hartley's ESO imposes strict conditions, including a 24-hour curfew for the first 12 months, electronic monitoring and restricted access to the internet - the means by which he contacted his young victims in the past. Hartley has also been directed 'not to enter or loiter near' any place where people under 16 years old are congregating, and has to stay away from schools, early childhood centres, parks libraries, swimming pools and churches. He is required to live at an approved address in Taranaki. Continues to deny offending Despite all this, Hartley continues to deny his offending - even to the point of trying to take an appeal against his convictions all the way to the Supreme Court, years after they were imposed and continuing beyond his release from jail. The Supreme Court turned him down last month, saying the 10-year delay in making the appeal was 'inordinate' and it did not see any risk that a miscarriage of justice had occurred. Hartley's case was considered by the Parole Board in June, when it imposed the conditions of his ESO. Lawyers for the Department of Corrections told the board that Hartley remained untreated for his harmful sexual behaviour, and had failed to engage adequately in safety planning. However, the Parole Board noted that he had recently engaged with a psychologist with a view to developing such a plan - the first indication that he was taking greater personal responsibility to managing his risk. 'It is of fundamental significance to his safe return to the community that Mr Hartley completes that work and develops a robust safety plan, albeit from a denier's perspective,' the Parole Board report said. 'We accept the view that without developing his insight into his risk to children under 16 years of age in the community, his risk of re-offending will remain very high.' Under the terms of his ESO, Hartley will be on a 24-hour curfew until April 13, 2026. After that, he will have to be at home between 8pm and 6am every night, and submit to electronic monitoring if a probation officer deems it necessary. He cannot consume alcohol or non-prescription drugs and cannot enter Wellington, Porirua and Manawatū. He also cannot possess any device capable of accessing the internet or capturing, recording or storing images or video without supervision. He will be required to disclose to his probation officer if he is in any intimate relationship. Ric Stevens spent many years working for the former New Zealand Press Association news agency, including as a political reporter at Parliament, before holding senior positions at various daily newspapers. He joined NZME's Open Justice team in 2022 and is based in Hawke's Bay. His writing in the crime and justice sphere is informed by four years of frontline experience as a probation officer.

Cam McEvoy's touching tribute to wife after gold following tough family move

Cameron McEvoy has paid tribute to his wife and three week old son after winning gold in the 50m freestyle having left his young family behind to attend the championships. McEvoy became a father only three weeks ago when his wife gave birth to their son, Hartley. And the 31-year-old had to make the tough call and leave his family not long after to get on the plane and travel to Singapore in preparation for his 50m freestyle event. And to make it all worth it after leaving his son and wife, McEvoy won gold at the Swimming World Championships as the oldest male Aussie to ever do so. And in a touching moment, McEvoy quickly paid tribute to his wife having taken on the role of supporting their young family while he chased his dream. "Shoutout to (wife) Maddi at home, I couldn't be here without her; shoutout to Hartley, my three-week-old son," he said. "I'm going straight to the newborn trenches. I'll start to do the night routines, help Maddi, and just enjoy the bubble, really. It sounds cliche, but win or lose, I'm going home a winner. It has given me a new light on the sport, on life, something new to navigate. And I'll see where it takes me in the future." McEvoy defended his 50m title from the Paris Olympics recording 21.14 to take first place. McEvoy admitted he wasn't sure when he would return to swimming as he takes on father duties, but it wasn't the end of his career just yet. "But I'm not stopping," McEvoy said. "Imagine telling myself in 2022 this is where I'd be - you couldn't write a script like that. The dream lives on, right? My story just goes for a while." In a lovely moment after his gold, McEvoy posted a photo of his three week old son and wife watching his race back in Australia. McEvoy was on the verge of quitting swimming back in 2022. Although he soldiered on and decided to change his methods and training to keep his dream alive. And he has now gone back-to-back winning Olympic and world titles gold in the 50m freestyle. McKeown became arguably the greatest women's backstroker of all time having won the 200m event. McKeown touched in at 2:03.33 to record a championship record and beat rival Regan Smith. "I wasn't feeling too great heading in, a bit of illness and stuff going around, dealing with a bit of a shoulder (injury)," McKeown said. "I dug really deep." McKeown completed the 100-200m double at the Swimming World Championships and, like McEvoy, won gold in her favourite events at the Paris Olympics and now in Singapore.

Garrett Hartley's iconic 40-yard FG is the Saints Play of the Day

'I don't want you thinking about anything but hitting that fleur-de-[expletive]-lis' We're down to 40 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season, and Garrett Hartley's 40-yard field goal against the Minnesota Vikings is our Saints Play of the Day. Now, a 40-yard field goal in itself isn't too exciting. But this kick in particular had the highest stakes of any play in team history. Hartley sent the Saints to Super Bowl XLIV by nailing his field goal in overtime of the NFC championship game. He followed Sean Payton's advice to aim for the team's black and gold fleur-de-lis waving on a banner between the uprights. It was one of the hardest-fought games in recent memory. The score was tied up four times and the Saints defensed hammered the Vikings offense, taking advantage of two Brett Favre interceptions and a three lost fumbles from Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and Bernard Berrian. Minnesota's ball security proved to be their downfall when Favre threw his second interception in the final seconds of regulation; Tracy Porter picked it off, setting the stage for his iconic pick-six off of Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl. As for Hartley? His season to this point was wild. He'd been suspended for the first four games and was inactive during the next seven contests before getting called in to replace John Carney. He went 9-of-11 on field goals and 10-of-11 on extra points in the team's last five regular season games, but he kicked things into gear in the playoffs. Hartley was perfect on each of his field goals (including three of them in the Super Bowl from distances of 46, 44, and 47 yards) and all 12 of his extra point tries. It's not enough to say the Saints wouldn't have won Super Bowl XLIV without him. Without Hartley, they wouldn't have even gotten there.

Féile an Phobail: Thousands expected at west Belfast's 'window to the world'

Féile an Phobail, billed as Ireland's biggest community arts festival, returns this weekend with thousands expected to attend events over the next two in its 37th year, the festival pitches itself as a celebration of Irish culture, with a spectacle of music, art and comedy events as well as political year's festival will have added significance for one of its founders who will be conducting his long-running walking tours of Belfast City Cemetery for the final Hartley, a former Sinn Féin lord mayor of Belfast, said the graveyard is "a reservoir" of the city's history and the perfect place to reflect on the years gone by. "It's about the complexity of those who are buried here," Mr Hartley said."It's about the great and the good. Those who shaped Belfast in the 19th century, who made it the Silicon Valley of its day."It's about women, it's about the poor, it's about the working class, it's about my notions of death and how death plays a part in the humanity of human beings." Mr Hartley told BBC News NI that while he plans to take a step back he hopes to continue his involvement in other ways. He believes the festival has allowed west Belfast to "connect with the world in a time when it appears to be upside down"."I feel it has all the potential to tap into the Irish diaspora worldwide," Mr Hartley told BBC News NI."Féile was founded at a time when the demonisation of west Belfast was at its height and so it was an expression of the internal light in our community, the creative, artistic element aspects."We wanted to show the generosity of this community and its openness, and I think Féile continues to do that in a big way." The festival will also be "keepin' 'er country" with the return of a country music night after its sell-out debut in 2024.Féile Country Fest takes place on 2 Carter returns to the line-up alongside Claudia Buckley and The Whistlin' Donkeys. Speaking to BBC News NI, the country star said he was relishing another fantastic night at Falls Park."We're really excited for this year's Féile, we played their last year and it was one of the biggest gigs of the entire year and festival season," Carter said."In Belfast we've a good old crowd that follows us so it was great to see the tremendous success at last year's country night."The Liverpool native who now lives in County Fermanagh said being able to perform in front of thousands at the west Belfast venue was "a dream come true" and praised efforts to make the concert affordable for families. Controversy The festival has not been without week, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, one of its principal funders, asked organisers to remove its logo from the festival's sports events after a children's sports event was named after a former IRA chief of the past, there have been complaints about pro-IRA chanting at a gig by the band The Wolfe Tones.
