Samsung may have accidentally revealed its tri-fold phone design: Here's what it looks like
In the last few months, rumour had it that Samsung is also working on a tri-fold foldable smartphone called the Galaxy G Fold, but we had no solid news about it until now. The South Korean phone manufacturer recently rolled out a One UI 8 beta build, which includes new animations that give us an idea of how Samsung's upcoming multi-fold device might look like. According to Android Authority, these animations relate to the NFC chip on the device, but as you can see in the video below, Samsung's much rumoured tri-fold phone will most likely have three rear panels, with the leftmost panel housing the camera island. As for the middle, the leaked animations suggest that this might house the cover display, while the rightmost panel has no bezels, indicating that it might have a display but instead will act as the back panel. However, unlike Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, the world's first tri-fold phone, Samsung's tri-fold phone may have hinges that fold inwards. This is quite similar to the G-shaped fold prototype, which the company showcased earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress. An animation also suggests that the device will have two hinges of different sizes, with the left side folding inwards while the right side sandwiching on the top. In another animation, we can see that Samsung might warn users not to fold the right panel first, as the camera island might prevent the device from folding flat and damage the device. According to a post on X by the known tipster Jukan Choi, Samsung will reportedly start mass production of its tri-fold phones in September, with the product making its way to the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. Like the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, Samsung's much-anticipated tri-fold phone is said to cross the $3,000 mark. However, we currently don't have more details about what kind of hardware Samsung will offer on its first-ever multi-fold phone.

The leaker reiterates previously disclosed information, stating that the Samsung tri-fold model would be released in restricted quantities and will only be available in South Korea and China. Samsung Tri-Fold expected specifications While normal book-style foldables have a huge display and a single hinge, Samsung is expected to follow in the footsteps of Huawei Mate XT Ultimate and release a smartphone with two hinges. We've previously seen patent leaks indicating similar arrangements, including one with two hinges and another with three hinges and four connected panels. Indeed, these foldables will open up into full-size tablets, as opposed to the current state of foldables, which provides a user with the width of two standard smartphone displays side by side. According to Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, Samsung's rumored triple folding smartphone, which could be called the Galaxy G Fold, will have a screen size of approximately 9.9 inches when fully unfolded. Huawei could launch its second tri-fold phone next year
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate was the world's first tri-fold phone. According to leaker FixedFocus (via Huawei Central), a successor may arrive as early as mid-2026. This follows the international launch of the first model last month. According to the tipster, the second-generation Mate XT is expected to resemble the original model but will feature an improved camera system and improved Kirin 5G chips. A better display panel is also anticipated. The current model launched with a three-lens arrangement and Kirin 9010 5G chipset. The Mate XT runs on Harmony OS and offers various RAM and storage options. It also has a 5,600mAh battery. The Huawei Mate XT signified a significant advancement in foldable smartphone technology. Its most notable feature is its ability to unfold into a 10.2-inch display, which offers a tablet-like experience perfect for multitasking, streaming media, and productivity tasks. The device also retains the convenience of a foldable design that allows it to be compact and easily portable. The phone's single screen measures 6.4 inches, while its dual screen is 7.9 inches. Tri-fold phones are still in their early stages, but that may change soon as companies like Samsung are expected to enter the market. Rumors suggest that the maker of the Galaxy S25 Ultra is developing its first tri-fold phone, which could be launched as early as this summer. Huawei's Mate XT features a single flexible panel that folds inward, while Samsung's tri-fold device is anticipated to fold inward from both the left and right sides. If you're thinking about purchasing a Huawei phone, it might be difficult depending on your location. Countries such as the U.S., U.K., Australia, and others have banned Huawei products due to security concerns.

My first look at super slim tri-fold Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 has me impressed
Tri-fold smartphone designs were a prominent feature at MWC 2025, with Tecno's Phantom Ultimate 2 standing out as a notable contender. First teased in August 2024, the device was shown off in a glass enclosure. While I was unable to go hands-on with this concept foldable phone, I did manage to persuade a Tecno representative to remove it from the case to demonstrate the folding and unfolding mechanism, offering a closer look at this concept device. The Phantom Ultimate 2's most striking feature when I first saw it is its noticeably thin profile when unfolded. At a mere 3.5mm at its thinnest point, it surpasses the Honor Magic V3, currently considered the thinnest book-style foldable smartphone on the market at 4.35mm unfolded. Of course, Tecno has yet to release this publicly but it's an impressive feat nevertheless. It also hasn't given us an indication of how much its tri-fold would cost if the handset was to make it out of concept and into stores, but going by the other premium foldable phones on the market, it'll be a lot. When folded, the device maintains an 11mm thickness, and while that's thicker than a standard smartphone, it's still pretty impressive considering its trifold nature. It means it's thinner than the first trifold phone to hit the market (in China and Malaysia at least), the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate when both folded and unfolded. The triple-array camera bump is integrated into a symmetrically raised body that extends across that part of the device, providing a notable illusion that adds some bulk even if my eyes didn't notice it at first. I would love to throw this device in my pocket to see how friendly and comfortable it is in daily use. The Phantom Ultimate 2 boasts impressive display specs, with an outer display featuring a 6.48-inch OLED 3K LTPO screen with 392 PPI when folded. It looks like a pretty competitive and natural candybar smartphone in that configuration with the Android operating system scaling in an uncompromising way. Fully unfolded, the display measures a sizable 10 inches at a 4:3 aspect ratio. The display looked rich in color and had sharp and clear fidelity to my eyes. Fold creases were noticeable but not in a particularly unsightly way. Tecno has coupled the display with a thin hinge system for the Phantom Ultimate 2, which it claims can withstand over 300,000 folds. In a device that has two separate folding areas, this type of durability is even more crucial. From what I could see during the demonstration, the folding action appeared robust and stable with noticeable resistance that helped the device hold its form in various positions. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 can be fully folded for traditional mobile use in smartphone mode, fully unfolded for a large 10-inch display experience in tablet mode, set up in tent mode for media consumption or drawing applications, or arranged in laptop mode with one display flat on the table showing an on-screen keyboard while the other two displays extend vertically for better multitasking. This sort of flexibility is a big selling point for the tri-fold design. Having seen tri-fold designs online and from a distance before this trip to Barcelona, I find myself more convinced at their place in the smartphone market. As a concept, there's no way to know exactly when it might hit the market if at all, but I really like where Tecno is headed with the Phantom Ultimate 2.

Huawei's wild tri-fold phone finally breaks out of China, and I'm excited
Huawei unveiled the Mate XT Ultimate in China, just a day after the iPhone 16 Pro launch. While Apple introduced incremental upgrades, Huawei has pushed boundaries with an already novel form factor. And now, it's expanding beyond China—Huawei has announced the world's first tri-fold phone in Malaysia. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate features a 10.2-inch display (2232 × 3184 pixels), which folds into two additional form factors: a 7.9-inch (2048 × 2232 pixels) book-style foldable and a 6.4-inch (1008 × 2232 pixels) slab phone. More importantly, its three-screen mode adopts a 16:11 aspect ratio, offering a better media consumption experience than traditional foldables, which often have a boxy layout that isn't ideal for videos. Huawei's tri-fold design features two hinges and folds twice—one fold inwards and the other outwards. The inner fold has a noticeable crease, while the outer fold remains exposed. In my experience, the hinges felt sturdy enough to hold the phone in various positions without collapsing into single-screen mode. Both folding sides are secured by magnets, keeping the folded parts flush with the body. However, unfolding the outward-folding section takes some getting used to. Huawei hasn't officially revealed the chipset powering the Mate XT Ultimate, but reports suggest it runs on the in-house Kirin 9010, a 7nm processor. The phone packs 16GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. On paper, it's not as powerful as flagship devices like the Galaxy S25 Ultra or OnePlus 13, but in my limited hands-on time, the screen transitions between single, dual, and tri-screen modes were buttery smooth. That said, the user interface feels outdated. Unlike in China, where HarmonyOS is the standard, the global variant runs on EMUI 14, which doesn't have the most modern-looking UI. Surprisingly for 2025, Huawei hasn't highlighted any standout AI features on this device. The Mate XT Ultimate's global variant doesn't come pre-installed with Google apps. However, there are workarounds to download almost any Google app, including the Play Store. The new Huawei foldable phone sports a triple-camera setup, led by a 50MP main sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS). It's accompanied by a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with 5.5x optical zoom and OIS. On the front, you get an 8MP selfie camera. The Huawei tri-fold phone packs a 5,600mAh silicon-carbon battery with 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging. The capacity is promising, but it'll be interesting to see how it holds up when fully utilizing the large display. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is priced at 19,999 yuan (~$2,800) in China, making it a premium device. The European pricing is set at 3,499 Euros, which converts to approximately $3,660. It's still expensive but in my limited time, I found the usability to be promising. I'm excited about the fact that I can carry a full-size multimedia tablet in my pocket. And it seems like this form factor will see more iterations in the future since Samsung also teased a tri-fold phone at its Galaxy Unpacked in January. While I hope Huawei improves the UI with future updates, the Mate XT Ultimate remains a one-of-a-kind device in the world.
