Wheat dips again as short-covering rally loses steam

CANBERRA: Chicago wheat futures fell on Friday, slipping for the second straight day, as a short-covering rally that lifted prices from last week's five-year low ran out of steam, but remained on track for a weekly gain. Corn and soybean futures rose slightly. The most active wheat contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) dipped 0.2% to $5.43-1/4 a bushel by 0226 GMT but was up 3.5% from last Friday's close. CBOT soybeans rose 0.1% to $10.68-3/4 a bushel and were 1.7% higher over the week, and corn climbed 0.2% to $4.63-3/4 a bushel, gaining 4.5% so far this week. Wheat bounced back from a low of $5.06-1/4 hit on May 13 as concerns over adverse weather in Russia and China and a decline in US wheat ratings triggered short-covering by speculators, who had bet heavily on price declines. But traders are not convinced that crops will suffer significant immediate losses and funds switched back to net sellers on Thursday, traders said. 'CBOT wheat was too cheap. Now it's more fairly priced,' said Rabobank analyst Vitor Pistoia in Sydney. However, prices are likely to rise further only if there is a significant and crop-damaging change in weather conditions, he said. Keeping a floor under wheat prices, however, were better-than-expected weekly US wheat export numbers released on Thursday. Wheat rally hits the buffers as US dollar stabilises Total exports were the biggest for a single week since December 2023. The International Grains Council (IGC) maintained its 2025-26 wheat crop outlook at 806 million metric tons, with an upward revision for the United States offset by cuts for Iran and Turkey. The IGC also raised its forecast for 2025-26 global corn production by 3 million metric tons to 1.277 billion tons. Top wheat exporter Russia has removed a minimum wheat price recommendation until the end of the export season on July 1, sources told Reuters. The move could reduce Russian export prices but traders said it was unlikely to have a major impact because Russia doesn't have a huge amount of grain to sell and demand from importers is weak.

IGC Pharma's Puerto Rico CALMA Trial Site Offers Strategic Opportunity in High-Prevalence Alzheimer's Market

POTOMAC, MD / ACCESS Newswire / May 22, 2025 / IGC Pharma, Inc. ('IGC', or the 'Company') (NYSE American:IGC) today announced a clinical trial site at Santa Cruz Behavioral in Puerto Rico for its CALMA Phase 2 clinical trial, investigating IGC-AD1 for agitation in Alzheimer's disease. This strategic site directly addresses the significant impact of Alzheimer's in the region. Approximately 12.5% of Puerto Ricans over the age of 65 have Alzheimer's, a figure notably higher than the roughly 10% prevalence observed in older non-Hispanic white populations in the U.S. This disparity is influenced by factors such as Puerto Rico's rapidly aging demographic and unique genetic predispositions. The heightened prevalence translates into a substantial economic burden, with medical care for dementia in Puerto Rico accounting for over a quarter of total societal healthcare costs, a proportion higher than in the continental U.S. 'We're pleased to work with Santa Cruz Behavioral ('SCB') as a trial site for our CALMA study, expanding our reach in Puerto Rico alongside a previously announced site at the University of Puerto Rico,' said Ram Mukunda, CEO of IGC Pharma. 'Puerto Rico represents a high-need and underserved population in Alzheimer's care, and SCB strengthens our ability to evaluate IGC-AD1 across diverse patient populations. Diversity in clinical trials not only improves scientific validity but also supports broader regulatory and commercial success.' For IGC Pharma's investors, this initiative represents a strategic imperative. By engaging a vast, underserved market with a high disease prevalence, diverse clinical trials are not only ethically sound but also enhance the commercial viability of therapies by ensuring universal effectiveness. Santa Cruz Behavioral in Puerto Rico, known for its outstanding mental healthcare services from a biopsychosocial perspective, serves as a key partner in this endeavor. Patients and caregivers interested in participating in the CALMA trial should please contact Santa Cruz Behavioral in Bayamon Puerto Rico. The Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) declared the state government will always prioritise Sarawak's rights first because it is vital to safeguard Sarawak's autonomy. 'I want to reiterate that our stand and firm position in all our negotiations is always Sarawak first, our rights first,' she told the august House during the question-and-answer session in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today. She was responding to a question from Lidam Assan (GPS-Katibas), who had enquired on the status of Sarawak's MA63 negotiations. Sharifah Hasidah stressed that the Sarawak government remains steadfast in insisting that the federal government must recognise and acknowledge Sarawak's rights as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report, the Federal Constitution, the State Constitution, and other relevant state laws. 'All these must be recognised. This is our stand and our position,' she said, adding that Sarawak will not compromise when it comes to matters involving its constitutional entitlements and autonomy. Sharifah Hasidah's remarks come as Sarawak continues to engage with Putrajaya on various outstanding issues related to the implementation of MA63 and the devolution of powers to the state. The Sarawak government has long maintained that the restoration and full implementation of MA63 is vital to ensuring equitable development and preserving the rights and interests of the state and its people. MA63: Sarawak outlines two top priorities in negotiations

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has outlined two key demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as its top priorities in negotiations with the federal government. Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said among the current top priorities is the need to expedite discussions on the Special Grant formula under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution. She said Sarawak is also looking into the matter of increasing the number of parliamentary seats of Sarawak in the House of Representatives, to better reflect the spirit and intent of the MA63. 'These issues have been brought up regularly by the Sarawak government through official meetings and negotiation platforms, including the Mesyuarat Majlis Tindakan Pelaksanaan Perjanjian Malaysia 1963. 'The Sarawak government remains committed to ensuring that the rights and entitlements of the State are fully upheld in accordance with the Federal Constitution, MA63 and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report,' she said during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting today. Sharifah Hasidah was responding to a question from Lidam Assan (GPS-Katibas) on the current negotiation status of MA63 for Sarawak. Meanwhile, Sharifah Hasidah said the Sarawak government has partially resolved matters in respect of the Financial Review under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution. She said in this regard, as an interim arrangement, the federal government has agreed to increase the amount of the Special Grant for Sarawak from RM300 million to RM600 million for a period of five years. 'Nevertheless, the Sarawak Government strongly urges that negotiations on the Special Grant formula be expedited, in the spirit of partnership and in recognition of Sarawak's constitutional rights under the Federal Constitution and the MA63,' she added.

Plantation drive combines ecological & linguistic awareness

1 2 Koraput: In a pioneering move that combines environmental sustainability with cultural pride, the Nabarangpur forest division has launched a unique urban plantation initiative , ' Barnamala Udyan ' (alphabetical park) at Farsaguda under Kodinga forest range. What makes the drive exceptional is its innovative landscape design where saplings are planted corresponding to each letter of the Odia alphabet, promoting both ecological awareness and linguistic heritage. Spanning 28 acres (11.2 hectares), the project is part of the 2024-25 urban tree plantation initiative under the Increasing Green Cover (IGC) scheme. "We thought to utilise the funds meant for urban plantation in some more effective and innovative manner, and thus this plan was conceptualised," said Subash Chandra Khuntia, assistant conservator of forests, Nabarangpur. The initiative is expected to become a vibrant learning space for children and a green hotspot for the community. Forest officials said over 12,000 saplings of 160 species have been planted at the site. The park also features a striking plantation shaped like India's map, where saplings representing the official tree of each state have been planted in their respective geographic positions. The design serves as a powerful tool to raise awareness about India's rich biodiversity. Enhancing the visitor experience, the site includes an ethnic-style entrance gate, creatively designed display boards, and informative signage, all curated to offer both aesthetic and educational value. The initiative has drawn praise from senior officials and residents alike. Visitors are flocking to the park, not just for leisure but to engage with its cultural and ecological narratives. "With its blend of cultural significance and ecological innovation, Barnamala Udyan stands as a model for urban plantation efforts to be emulated by others across the state," said Ranjan Naik, a frequent visitor.
