Pride and Prejudice fans urged to watch 'captivating' Jane Austen period drama

The period drama series is a hidden gem worth watching Are you a die-hard fan of Jane Austen adaptations but think you've seen them all? Think again, because there's one gem that might have escaped your notice. Airing back in 2008 on ITV, this four-part limited series offers a unique twist on the classic Pride and Prejudice tale, reports the Express. ‌ Armchair critics and fans on IMDb have been heaping praise on the miniseries. One user left a glowing 10/10 rating, saying: "I am utterly captivated by this refreshing take on Austen. I used to love romantic periodical novels when much younger, but they have since fallen out of favour with me, as they are all so alike. Here I am quite unaware, as of yet, what may happen and I absolutely adore the suspense. ‌ "The actors are well chosen for their task and I am quickly falling in love with them one by one. I never thought I would see Mr Bingley as adorable, but in this it is quite so." Another enthusiast gave a perfect score too, commenting: "Three episodes in and I feel now is the time to say a big well done to all concerned. As a long time Austen lover and a fan of period/costume drama I was unsure what to expect from this reworking of a favourite story." "As others have commented this bears similarities with 'Life on Mars', a person taken out of modern day life and deposited into the past, albeit Jane Austen's fictitious one." ‌ Meanwhile, another viewer remarked: "The mini series was absolutely sweet and funny and it will be appreciated by real Jane Austen fanatics. "It does resemble the weirdest dream that only authors of fan fiction have had. At times the plot lines turn into silly situations but for most of the time they are quite enjoyable. ‌ "The young actors make the most of it. I wish response has been better so that the series can be longer." A fourth viewer rated the programme a perfect 10/10, dubbing their review "Brilliant!". ‌ They penned: "I just watched the whole thing. I hadn't even realized it was a mini-series, I simply got the DVD from netflix and popped it in. It didn't offer me the option to select episodes, it just played the whole thing as one big movie. "One big, wonderful, delightful film! I haven't enjoyed a film this much in years. It was a complete treat. I love Pride & Prejudice; I've read the book, and seen most (maybe all? ) of the screen adaptations, some multiple times. "And I'm usually a bit of a purist, but I thought this might be fun, so I gave it a try. It well exceeded my expectations. I'm still aglow with enjoyment [sic]." ‌ Lost in Austen is a cheeky homage to the celebrated author and her best-known novel Pride and Prejudice. The show trails self-confessed Jane Austen enthusiast Amanda Price (portrayed by Jemima Rooper) residing in modern London during the Noughties. ‌ After a less than impressive proposal from her boyfriend, involving a makeshift wedding ring made from a can ring pull, Amanda finds herself mysteriously swapping places with Elizabeth Bennet (Gemma Arterton) and landing in the world of Pride and Prejudice through a door in her bathroom. Amanda's sudden arrival quickly throws the novel's events into chaos, as she frantically tries to steer the plot back on track. During Amanda's escapades, she encounters Mr Darcy (Elliot Cowan), with the pair initially butting heads before sparks begin to fly. Lost In Austen boasts a star-studded cast, including Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville as Mr Bennet, Doctor Who's Alex Kingston as Mrs Bennet, Grantchester's Morven Christie as Jane Bennet, Suits actress Christina Cole as Caroline Bingley, and Tom Mison from Apple TV+'s See as Mr Bingley, among others. Additional casting includes Lindsay Duncan as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Guy Henry as Mr. William Collins, Michelle Duncan as Charlotte Lucas, Ruby Bentall as Mary Bennet, Pippa Haywood as Frankie, Amanda's mother, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Pirhana, Amanda's friend, Daniel Percival as Michael Dolan, Amanda's boyfriend, and Genevieve Gaunt as Georgiana Darcy.

Superman's James Gunn on How He Cast David Corenswet as Clark Kent

James Gunn revealed how he discovered his Superman actor, David Corenswet, during a new guest spot appearance. Gunn's Superman film serves as the inaugural cinematic entry in the fledgling DC Universe. The casting of the iconic role of Superman / Clark Kent was always going to be critically important for the franchise. Gunn appeared on JM Video Club (via Konbini) and candidly spoke about the movies that inspired him as a filmmaker during a 30-minute guest spot. He picked up the 2022 horror feature Pearl and disclosed that he saw Corenswet's performance in the movie as the Projectionist and thought that the actor could be Superman. 'I actually was watching this movie [Pearl], which is great. It's a great movie…And I saw a character whose name is just the Projectionist in the movie, and I'm like, 'That guy looks like he could possibly be Superman,'' Gunn recalled, adding, 'I looked up his name on IMDb and said, 'Can you bring this guy in?'' Gunn added that Corenswet and other actors subsequently came in for Superman casting. In that initial stage, Gunn apparently had a frontrunner in mind, but their audition tape 'wasn't very good,' so he moved on. He then saw Corenswet's tape, and thought he was 'amazing' and 'funny.' Notably, Pearl serves as a prequel to X (2022) and is the second entry in the X film series. Ti West directed the feature from a script he penned with Mia Goth, who also stars in the movie as the eponymous Pearl. Before Superman, Corenswet's filmography included 2018's Affairs of State, 2022's Look Both Ways, Netflix's The Politician, and the Netflix miniseries Hollywood. It was announced in June 2023 that the actor has been cast as Superman in Gunn's movie. Corenswet's performance as Superman has received widespread acclaim, with SuperHeroHype's Matt Morrison writing that the actor's iteration might be 'the best cinematic' version of the character.

Ballard star Maggie Q's next project already lined up away from hit drama

Ballard star Maggie Q has already lined up her next project and this time it's with actress Jennifer Garner. Prime Video fans have been describing Maggie Q as "absolutely fire" in her role in Prime Video's Ballard, but the star isn't taking a break. The creator of Netflix's hit The Lincoln Lawyer and the Bosch universe, Michael Connelly, is also behind the newly released series Ballard, which has quickly become a fan favourite with its gripping tail of an LAPD detective taking charge of the cold cases division against the backdrop of her personal struggles at work. ‌ Since last week's launch, the show has received heaps of adoration, with viewers hailing the 46 year old Maggie Q as "fabulous" and proclaiming her an "incredible star" for her stunning portrayal. ‌ As the buzz around this latest spin-off from the Bosch Legacy series continues to rocket, Maggie Q is shifting gears, focusing on a fresh project already in the pipeline. Maggie Q's IMDb page hints at her starring in Can't Go Home, which is tantalisingly positioned in pre-production. ‌ This upcoming series promises high-octane thrills centered on Tom Desjadon and KD Williams, portrayed by Tom Mariano and the distinguished Jennifer Garner respectively, two fugitive recovery agents entangled within the menacing web of Boston's criminal underbelly. With details of Q's character Cam still under wraps, fans are left intrigued as to how her role will intertwine within this narrative of deceit and peril. ‌ While an official release date for Can't Go Home hasn't been confirmed, it's anticipated to premiere later this year on Prime Video. As of now, there's no word on whether Q will return as Detective Ballard for a second series of the show. However, considering its impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and glowing reviews on social media, it seems likely that we'll see more from the programme. Ballard is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.

‘Outstanding and raw' war film with Saoirse Ronan streaming now

The drama is said to be a tough watch An 'outstanding' war film featuring a little-known Saoirse Ronan role is currently streaming. Released back in 2010, The Way Back stars the Little Women star, alongside Hollywood heavyweights Colin Farrell, Jim Strugess, and Ed Harris. ‌ The film is currently available to stream at no extra cost for Prime Video subscribers. ‌ Set in 1939, the drama follows a group of gulag prisoners who escape a Siberian labour camp, and must trek thousands of miles to freedom. It is inspired by Polish prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz's 1956 memoir, The Long Walk, in which he claimed to have escaped a Soviet gulag during World War Two. ‌ Although the memoir tells an inspiring story, its authenticity is widely debated. While Rawicz, who died in 2004, claimed to have embarked on this gruelling 4,000 mile escape, historical evidence suggests the author may not have taken on the journey at all. Despite this, famed Australian director Peter Weir was drawn to the story's heart and decided to adapt it for the big screen. Ronan plays Irena, a young refugee who encounters escapees Janusz Wieszczek (Sturgess), Mr Smith (Harris), and Valka (Farrell) during their journey. ‌ Upon its release, The Way Back earned widespread critical acclaim, bagging a respectable 73 per cent critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers raved about the period drama, with one saying: "This Peter Weir epic offers sweeping ambition and strong performances to go with its grand visual spectacle." ‌ Casual moviegoers were equally impressed by the drama, with one Google Review stating: "It's a masterpiece and it's a pity that this movie is so underrated." The same fan continued: "From actors to the dialogues, lights, camera-angle, background music, scripting, screenplay, art direction of sets, cinematography, everything will just blow your mind." Someone else crowned the feature as "one of the greatest movies of WW2". Meanwhile, another fan said: "[It is a] tough to watch but an incredible story!" Elsewhere, viewers claimed the "acting was outstanding and so was the story," with yet another fan praising the "raw" storyline. A final viewer took to IMDb and simply penned: "Grim but beautiful."

James Carter Cathcart, voice behind memorable Pokemon characters, dies at 71

Photo: Leesa Harrington-Squyres/Facebook James Carter Cathcart, an American voice actor who portrayed some of the most indelible characters in the Pokemon franchise and became a familiar presence in several other popular animated series, died on July 8. He was 71. His wife Martha Jacobi confirmed in a social media post that he died at Calvary Hospital in New York City. His former wife Jeanne Gari said in an interview that the cause of his death was throat cancer. For more than two decades, Cathcart was the voice of several popular characters in the Pokemon series and movies, including the genial Professor Oak, his grandson Gary, the antagonising James and the wisecracking feline creature Meowth, one of the few Pokemon who could speak. Cathcart joined the cast of Pokemon in 1998, just as the franchise exploded into a global craze. While many of the characters cycled in and out through the series' more than 1,000 episodes, his voice remained a steady presence. He also had roles in an array of other anime series, video games and animated shows, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece and Shadow The Hedgehog . He retired from voice acting in 2023 after he was diagnosed with cancer. He appeared in more than 100 roles, according to the entertainment database IMDb, but his work in Pokemon is his best known. The voice actors who also had roles in the Pokemon universe acknowledged his death on social media. Erica Schroeder, who played Nurse Joy and the creature Wobbuffet, said: 'The community will miss you. The world will miss you.' Cathcart was born on Jan 4, 1954, in West Long Branch, New Jersey, and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He is survived by Jacobi; his daughters Nicole Zoppi, 41, and Mackenzie, 30; and his son Carter, 31. Cathcart said in an interview in 2017 that he was grateful the Pokemon franchise had continued to thrive and that he wanted to keep voicing the characters for as long as he could. 'Who could imagine 20 years ago that we would still be doing the show and it would be doing so well, but there's a new generation of kids that loves the Pokemon?' he was quoted as saying. – ©2025 The New York Times Company
