RBI bars banks from promoting third-party products on digital platforms; new draft rules mandate customer consent, risk checks for online banking

NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed a ban on displaying third-party products and services, including those from promoter groups and subsidiaries, on banks' digital banking platforms. Issuing its draft 'Digital Banking Channels Authorisation Directions, 2025' on Monday, RBI said such displays will only be allowed if specifically permitted by the regulator. Risk-based monitoring mandatory According to the draft norms, banks will be required to implement risk-based transaction monitoring and surveillance mechanisms. They must track customer transaction patterns, flag unusual transactions, and, where necessary, seek prior customer confirmation for outlier transactions in line with their fraud risk management policies. RBI has invited feedback from stakeholders on the draft guidelines until August 11. Digital channels should be network independent The draft also mandates that mobile banking services offered by banks should be accessible across mobile network operators, ensuring network independence for customers. Additionally, banks cannot make digital banking enrollment mandatory for availing other facilities, like debit cards. 'The choice to apply for digital banking facilities shall lie solely with the customer,' the draft said, adding that explicit customer consent must be recorded for providing such services. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Sticky Sweet Treat Is Healthier Than You Think – 15 Reasons to Add It to Your Diet! Banks using Core Banking Solutions (CBS) and capable of handling IPv6 internet traffic will be allowed to offer view-only digital banking services. First Brits get access to £10 a month ‘superfast internet' trial with Wi-Fi EIGHT times faster than average UK broadband

GIFFGAFF has finally launched its trial for a new speedy 500Mbps broadband service in the UK. But in a rare turn of events, initial service speeds appear to be delivering better than the headline rate of 500Mbps, according to 1 Faster packages and different pricing are expected to follow the trial Credit: GiffGaff U sing nexfibre and Virgin Media 's 10Gbps capable full fibre networks , GiffGaff is only the second provider after Virgin to harness nexfibre 's new wholesale network. The network is currently available to over 2 million UK premises. However, the trial, which was first confirmed back in mid-April 2025, is only opening up to 500 Brits to begin with. Fortunately, that doesn't include the small pool of trialists that tested the service before. READ MORE ON WI-FI The trial will run for 12 months and offer triallists a heavily discounted broadband price of just £10 per month. That's not bad for 500Mbps - which is roughly eight times faster than the average UK broadband speed. According to the first customers, the package gives households a proper IP address, delivers symmetric speeds and some of the exterior kit appears to retain Virgin Media's branding. But there is no IPv6 yet, which offers more built-in security features than the older IPv4 used by the majority of broadband providers, including Virgin Media. Most read in Tech There is no GiffGaff branded kit to accompany the service yet either. Customers appear to be receiving an Arcadyan Technology-build Wi-Fi hubs, or Amazon's Eero 6+ routers. Soaring temperatures could affect your Wi-Fi, experts warn – how to stop your router overheating & avoid speed slow down It is unclear whether GiffGaff will allow customers to use a third-party router. According to ISPreview, it looks possible to use the hardware you have already installed, just with GiffGaff's new trial service. Faster packages and different pricing are expected to follow the trial. Although we don't yet know what those packages will look like, or when they will be available to customers.

MyIX expects internet traffic in Malaysia to keep rising

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) expects internet traffic to continue its strong upward trajectory throughout 2025 and beyond, fuelled by rising demand for real-time applications, AI-powered services and high-definition content. Its chairman Chiew Kok Hin said that Malaysia's digital economy is becoming increasingly reliant on fast, secure and low-latency connectivity as more consumers and businesses embrace digital lifestyles. This trend has also attracted growing interest from international networks, regional content providers and enterprises aiming to localise their traffic, giving rise to the need for sustained infrastructure investments to future-proof the nation's internet ecosystem. 'The traffic growth is now structural and no longer cyclical,' he told SunBiz. 'From streaming and cloud to AI workloads and e-commerce, the expectation for high-performance connectivity is only increasing. That's why we're investing ahead of demand.' This forward-looking approach builds on MyIX's recent efforts to upgrade national infrastructure, reinforce cybersecurity and nurture future digital talent. The exchange, which recorded a 17% year-on-year traffic increase in 2024 to a peak of 2.6 terabits per second (Tbps), has embarked on deploying a geographically redundant architecture to ensure resilience, while also strengthening cybersecurity compliance and expanding skills training. MyIX is also enhancing its IPv6 readiness, exploring active-active peering models, and onboarding new international peers, including those from Indonesia and Singapore. 'These efforts position Malaysia as a strategic regional gateway for digital traffic across Southeast Asia,' Chiew said. 'At MyIX, our mission is to deliver secure, resilient and inclusive internet exchange infrastructure that supports Malaysia's digital transformation,' he added. 'The continued growth we are seeing reflects Malaysia's potential to lead ASEAN in digital connectivity.' Established in 2006 under the guidance of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), MyIX continues to serve as the nation's only neutral internet exchange platform, bridging networks and empowering Malaysia's digital communities.
