Omar dodges J&K cops, scales fence to pay tributes at martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and his National Conference colleagues on Monday dodged police curbs, sprinted on foot and scaled a fence to pay tributes to July 13 martyrs, a day after all political leaders of Kashmir and cabinet ministers of the NC were not allowed to visit the Mazar-e-Shohada (1931 martyrs' graveyard) in Srinagar's Old City. This screengrab shows Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah climbing a fence to pay tributes to July 13 martyrs at Naqshband Sahib graveyard in the Old City of Srinagar on Monday. (PTI Photo) 'Paid my respects at the graves of the martyrs of July 13, 1931. The unelected government tried to block my way, forcing me to walk from Nowhatta Chowk. They blocked the gate to the Naqshband Sahib shrine, forcing me to scale a wall. They tried to physically grapple me but I was not going to be stopped today,' Omar posted on X. Besides Omar and his cabinet ministers, NC president Farooq Abdullah also offered prayers at the cemetery. Omar criticised lieutenant governor Manoj Singh and the police for trying to stop him and his entourage from entering the martyrs' graveyard. 'It is sad that on the instructions of the people who claim that their responsibility is the security and law and order, we were not allowed to offer 'fateha (prayers)' here. We were kept in house arrest (on Sunday). When gates opened, I expressed to the control room my desire to offer 'fateha'. Within minutes, bunkers were put up and they were not removed late into the night,' Abdullah told reporters after paying tributes at the graveyard. Chief minister Omar Abdullah and others being stopped by police personnel as they arrive to pay tribute to July 13 martyrs at Naqshband Sahib graveyard in the Old City of Srinagar on Monday. (PTI Photo) 'Barriers were raised, but so was our resolve. Today, we stood firm at the Mazar-e-Shohada, offering fateha (prayers), laying flowers, and honouring the valour of 1931,' he said, adding 'Today I didn't inform them (the police) still a bunker was placed and attempts were made to stop us. We aren't slaves of anybody but slave of our own people.' Videos of the chief minister and his party colleagues scaling the wall of the cemetery were shared widely on social media. Even health and education minister Sakina Ittoo reached the graveyard on a scooty without any official protocol. Omar said: 'I was subjected to grappling but I am made of sterner stuff and was not to be stopped. I was doing nothing unlawful or illegal. In fact, these protectors of the law need to explain under what law they were trying to stop us from offering fateha,' he said. NC reviving 'politics of graves': BJP The BJP, however, blamed chief minister Omar Abdullah and the NC of reviving the 'politics of graves' to stoke unrest to stay politically relevant. 'Omar Abdullah is shamelessly indulging in the politics of graves just to remain politically relevant. By glorifying the events of 1931, he is whitewashing a day soaked in the blood of innocent Kashmiri Pandits. This is not a tribute, it's a calculated provocation,' J&K BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said. He said the BJP firmly rejects the designation of July 13 as Martyrs' Day. 'This was not a day of martyrdom, but a day when the seeds of communal hatred were sown in Kashmir. It marked the beginning of a violent, exclusionary narrative that targeted minorities,' he said and accused Omar Abdullah of double standards. 'On one hand, he rolls out the red carpet for tourists to sell peace. On the other hand, he indulges in separatist appeasement and communal glorification. You can't have it both ways,' he said. July 13 was observed as Martyrs' Day by mainstream politicians and separatists in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in memory of the 21 Kashmiris who were killed by the army of Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh during an uprising in 1931 when the region was a princely state. Several leaders had earlier criticised Omar Abdullah for deliberately remaining away from Kashmir on July 13. This time, Omar, who was in Delhi, reached Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.

Omar Abdullah Calls Newspapers "Cowards" For Not Reporting House Arrest

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed anguish over the missing media coverage in local newspapers on the issue of "the entire elected government being locked up". Mr Abdullah accused some newspapers of burying the news story about several elected representatives being confined to their homes on the Kashmir Martyrs' Day, as alleged by Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief spokesperson and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq as well. "Take a look at our local newspapers - both from Jammu and from Srinagar, English & vernacular. You'll be able to distinguish the cowards from the ones with guts. The cowards have completely buried the fact that the entire elected government was locked up yesterday, along with most elected representatives. The newspapers with some guts have put it on the front page. Shame on the sellouts who buried the story, I hope the size of the envelope was worth it," Mr Abdullah posted on X. Taking to X, the Chief Minister shared pictures of police outside his residence, with armoured vehicles parked and movement restricted, as the regional parties, including the National Conference (NC), were denied permission to visit the martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar. "To borrow from the late Arun Jaitley Sb - Democracy in J&K is a tyranny of the unelected. To put it in terms you will all understand today the unelected nominees of New Delhi locked up the elected representatives of the people of J-K," Mr Abdullah wrote in a post on X. Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami also posted on X, saying, "A padlock on my gate, placed under house arrest and denied the right to pay homage to the July 13 martyrs. This day is etched in our collective memory -- a reminder of those who laid down their lives for the restoration of democracy and a better future for us all," JKNC's Sadiq alleged that several party leaders had been confined to their homes to stop them from paying tribute to the martyrs. "Since last night, I like many of my colleagues, including the party leadership at Gupkar, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, and a majority of sitting MLAs have been locked inside my home. This is not just unfortunate; it is a deliberate attempt to suppress remembrance and deny us the right to honour the martyrs of July 13. Such actions are not only unnecessary they are unjustified, deeply insensitive, and reveal a troubling disregard for history," Sadiq posted on X. After not being allowed to visit the martyrs graveyard, People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said that the "dil ki doori (distance of hearts)" between Kashmir and the rest of India would end when the Centre accepts Kashmir's heroes as its own, just as Kashmiris have embraced national figures. "The day you accept our heroes as your own just as Kashmiris have embraced yours, from Mahatma Gandhi to Bhagat Sing, that day, as Prime Minister Modi once said, the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) will truly end," the PDP chief wrote on X. "When you lay siege to the Martyrs' Graveyard, lock people in their homes to prevent them from visiting Mazar-e-Shuhada, it speaks volumes. July 13th commemorates our martyrs, those who rose against tyranny, much like countless others across the country. They will always be our heroes," she added. Martyrs' Day in Kashmir was earlier an official holiday in the state; it was delisted after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

Bilawal pays tribute to 22 brave Kashmiri martyrs of 1931

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has paid glowing tribute to the 22 brave Kashmiri martyrs of July 13, 1931, whose blood marked the beginning of a resolute struggle against tyranny and injustice. He said that the sacrifice of the martyrs of Srinagar Central Jail is a timeless reminder that the spirit of freedom can never be suppressed by bullets. He added that those valiant sons of Kashmir laid down their lives not only for the right to speak, but for the dignity of an entire nation. The PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged that the Pakistan Peoples' Party, under the vision of Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, has always stood shoulder to shoulder with the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for self-determination. 'The legacy of July 13 lives on in the heart of every Kashmiri. We renew our commitment to their cause and reiterate that peace in the region is impossible without a just resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the aspirations of its people,' he emphasized. Bilawal concluded by urging the international community to take notice of the continued human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), and to play its role in ensuring justice, dignity, and freedom for the Kashmiri people.
