This England: Lawn speed record

Donald Campbell was the only man to hold both land- and water-speed records at the same time before he was killed at Coniston Water in the Lake District in 1967 during another record attempt. His daughter Gina broke the women's world water-speed record. Don Wales, meanwhile, Donald Campbell's nephew, has previously held UK and world records for the fastest electric car, steam-powered car and quickest lawnmower on Earth. Domino's has enlisted 'Domidog' – a Boston Dynamics K9 robot – to help protect against seagulls. The deployment follows a poll that showed one in three deliveries have fallen victim to the marauders. 'Seagulls have claimed too many seaside snacks, and it's time we did something about it,' said Izzy Gardener from Domino's. Hanwha secures full control of Korea's Nuri rocket program

Hanwha Aerospace will be the first private company in Korea to secure full lifecycle capabilities for rocket development, the company said Wednesday. The nation's leading defense manufacturer signed a technology transfer agreement with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, the state-run space agency, to acquire core technologies for the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II, also known as Nuri. The transfer includes the rocket's design and technologies for manufacturing and launch operations. Under the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace also gains rights to produce and launch the Nuri rocket through 2032, the company said. "This technology transfer is a critical milestone for improving the nation's space industry capabilities. It provides us with the foundation to enhance the KSLV-II's technological capabilities and cost-effectiveness," said Son Jae-il, president and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace. "Our goal is to build a robust and globally competitive commercial launch service, solidifying our position as a leader in the new space era." The Nuri rocket, Korea's first domestically developed launcher, was completed in 2023 through a 14-year project involving over 300 local companies, including Hanwha Aerospace, which developed key components such as liquid rocket engines. With its successful launch in May 2023, placing a satellite weighing over one metric ton into orbit, Korea became the seventh country worldwide to independently achieve this level of launch capability. While the KARI led the first three Nuri rocket launches, Hanwha Aerospace is set to take the lead for the remaining three, scheduled for November 2026 and 2027. Hanwha Aerospace will continue collaborating closely with KARI to ensure a seamless transfer of operational know-how and accumulated experience. The company is positioning space transportation as a future growth engine and is exploring further involvement in areas such as launch service operations and space exploration industries. To achieve this, it aims to build a vertically integrated value chain by leveraging its expertise in land, sea and air defense systems — including aircraft engines, armored vehicles, self-propelled howitzers and submarine batteries. Its subsidiary Hanwha Systems contributes advanced capabilities in radar, data security and process technologies that support Korea's key defense programs like the Cheongung missile systems and the K9 howitzer. Additionally, Hanwha Aerospace has incorporated satellite manufacturer Satrec Initiative as a key subsidiary within its expanding space portfolio.

Defense chief to visit Poland this week to sign K2 tank export deal

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back will head to Poland this week to attend a signing ceremony for a deal to export additional K2 battle tanks and hold talks with his Polish counterpart on expanding arms cooperation, the ministry said Wednesday. Ahn will depart for the European country on Thursday for a three-day visit, according to Seoul's defense ministry. It marks his first overseas trip since taking office as the first defense chief of the Lee Jae Myung government. Ahn's trip, arranged upon Poland's request, comes after South Korea's state arms procurement agency confirmed that Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Hyundai Rotem Co., the manufacturer of the K2 tanks, have wrapped up their final talks on the export deal. "The follow-up K2 tank agreement is the biggest single arms export contract to date and will serve as an occasion to advance the mutually beneficial cooperative ties between the two countries, based on their partnership," the defense ministry said in a release. The $6.5 billion deal follows a series of deals Poland signed in 2022 with South Korean defense companies to acquire K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers and FA-50 light attack aircraft amid the country's defense spending increase after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As part of the visit, Ahn will also hold talks with Kosiniak-Kamysz to discuss ways to strengthen their defense and arms industry cooperation as well as collaboration for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region. K-9 Frankie, killed in the line of duty, honored with statue in Massachusetts

A statue was unveiled over the weekend honoring Frankie, the first and only Massachusetts State Police K-9 to be killed in the line of duty. The statue was dedicated outside of Massachusetts State Police general headquarters in Framingham on Sunday. Frankie was shot and killed in 2022 during a standoff at a home on Oliver Street in Fitchburg. The suspect, who police said was 38-year-old Matthew Mack, died by suicide. Police said at the time that Mack had warrants stemming from a previous shooting. Sergeant David Stucenski, Frankie's handler, was attempting to arrest Mack when he allegedly fired multiple shots toward police. Stucenski was not hurt. Frankie was rushed to Wachusett Animal Hospital in Westminster following the shooting. It was the first medical transport for a police K-9 under Nero's Law, which was passed in response to the death of K-9 Nero, whose handler, Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon, was also killed in the line of duty in 2018. Nero's Law allows EMS to treat and transport injury police dogs. Police said in a statement following the status unveiling that the death of the 9-year veteran police dog "forever changed the course of his life, his handler, family, loved ones, and colleagues on the State Police." "This memorial provides an important, dedicated space to celebrate the life of K-9 Frankie and reflect on the enormous contributions of K-9s and their handlers to the mission of the State Police," Col. Geoffrey Noble said in a statement. The statue is located near the main entrance to the building. It was created by artisans from Utah and is a life-size bronze figure of the dog atop a granite base. An anonymous donor to the State Police Association of Massachusetts' Benevolent Fund paid for the statue to be built.
