Beloved CA cafe owner with ‘kind soul' shot dead at Nevada casino, friends say
A Southern California restaurateur described by friends as a 'kind soul' is among three people killed in a shooting outside a Reno casino, Nevada police reported. Andrew Canepa, 33, died in a shooting spree Monday, July 28, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, along with two others, Sparks police said in a news release. Four others were injured, including the accused gunman, police said. Canepa co-owned the Side Street Café in Newbury Park near Los Angeles, KABC reported. 'Andrew was a kind soul, a dedicated business owner, and a loving father to his young son,' wrote Andrew Gorell, a Ventura County supervisor, on X, formerly known as Twitter. Canepa, who had a 6-year-old son, was remembered for his welcoming presence at the café, a popular breakfast spot, KTLA said. 'He would sit down with people at the booth, share with them and make them feel at home,' friend Rick Bucaria told the station. 'Andrew was so warm and welcoming. He was always so happy.' 'He probably greeted and waited on almost everybody in this city,' friend Israel Rodriguez told KTLA. Canepa and a friend, Justin Aguila, 33, of Southern California, were in the Reno area for a bachelor party, police said in the release. They were shot in the back and killed while waiting outside the casino for a ride to the airport, police said. Angel Martinez, 66, of Reno, also died when he was shot while driving through the parking lot, police said. Two others are hospitalized but expected to recover, and one person was treated and released, police said in an earlier news release. Dakota Hawver, 26, of Reno, hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by an officer, is accused of firing more than 80 rounds from a 9mm pistol in the incident, police said. Authorities in Sparks, just outside Reno, are leading the investigation because it involves a police shooting, the release said. Investigators have not found a connection between Hawver and any of the victims or the casino, police said. Police ask anyone with information to call 775-353-2231. Newbury Park is about a 45-mile drive northwest from downtown Los Angeles.

Woman shot at Los Angeles residential day care, suspect arrested
One woman was injured in a shooting at a residential day care in an affluent Los Angeles neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. Authorities responded to the scene at the Kids Dream Learning Center in the Granada Hills neighborhood, just 10 miles south of Santa Clarita, in the early afternoon. 3 A woman was shot in the hand at a residential daycare in Los Angeles' Granada Hills neighborhood. The circumstances and a possible motive are still under investigation. Advertisement New York City is no stranger to senseless shootings at youth centers. In 2020, a shirtless gunman opened fire near a day care in the Bronx and sparked a gunfight. Eight children were inside the day care at the time. The center's owner wasn't surprised, but noted that the tykes could've been in serious danger if they'd been leaving when the shooting broke out. In 2022, a 3-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet outside a day care in Brooklyn. She was hit in the shoulder and had to wear a sling on her arm while she recovered. The child's distraught parents, meanwhile, took the horrific injury as a sign to pack up and leave the area as soon as they could.

Riders dangle in midair after spinning ride stalls at California amusement park
A ride malfunction left Knott's Berry Farm visitors briefly dangling in midair on a spinning ride at the California amusement park, news outlets reported. A video shows about 20 riders hanging sideways on the stopped Sol Spin ride Saturday, July 26, KTLA reported. Some of the riders are heard screaming in the video, KABC reported. Officials at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park told McClatchy News in a statement that the ride was stopped for about five minutes. The ride reopened after a full safety inspection. 'The safety of our guests is a top priority,' the park said. 'Today the ride did not complete a full cycle as a safety precaution.' Sol Spin sends riders six stories in the air on one of six spinning arms, Knott's Berry Farm said. In November, 22 people were stranded in midair on the ride for about three hours, KTLA said. Buena Park is about a 20-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.

California woman disfigured after suffering freak accident while making s'mores on outdoor fire pit
A California woman was left brutally disfigured after flames 'exploded' in her face while making s'mores over an outdoor fire pit. Viana Poggi, 18, was enjoying a fun summer night on July 6 with her cousin Alaina Arbiso when chaos unfolded before their eyes. While using a cement tabletop firepit flames suddenly blew toward Poggi, leaving blistering burns on her face and arms. 'We were making s'mores and what happened to me is called fire jetting. It's when an alcohol-fueled pit basically explodes,' the Laguna Niguel resident told KABC. Some tabletop fire pits, like the one Poggi used, are fueled by rubbing alcohol, but when hers needed to be refilled with the substance nobody knew a small flame was still burning inside. 'Because it was so quick I closed my eyes. I wasn't aware I was on fire. I thought I had just been burned by the rubbing alcohol,' the incoming college freshman told the outlet. When the hot flames hit her, Poggi said it felt cold against her skin before realizing what was happening to her. 'I was pushed into the pool and at that point we knew I was on fire. They had the ambulance come,' Poggi recalled. Arbiso said all she could remember was just how fast everything happened in that terrifying moment before she pushed her cousin into the water. 'Within like a millisecond, you don't even see it coming, you have no time to react. It just happened,' she said. After pushing Poggi into the water, Arbiso then grabbed a hose and sprayed down the flames spreading on the table. Another family member was also hit by the dangerous flames, but only Poggi was severely injured. When she got to a local burn center, Poggi was immediately asked by staff what was used to fuel the fire pit. 'Even when I got to the ER I just said I got hit by fire, and they asked me, "Was it rubbing alcohol?" Because it's so common for people to be burned that way,' she stated. One of her good friends, Alexandra Welsh, who works as a trauma nurse at the local hospital, was left shocked after seeing someone she knew come in with such intense injuries. 'I work at a trauma center, so I see a lot of traumatic injuries come in, but it is so different when it is someone who you think of as a little sister,' Welsh told the outlet. Despite the freak accident impacting her life, Poggi, who's been left with scars and burn marks, has decided to make the best of it. She's been documenting her recovery on TikTok, showing herself dressed in a hospital gown, covered in bandages as she heals. 'I always remember it could have been worse. I try to keep a good attitude,' Poggi said. She is due to start college next month at the University of San Francisco, but because of the burns she is also preparing for several procedures to help her recover. A GoFundMe page has since been launched by Arbiso to help her cousin with medical expenses while she takes on this next chapter of her life. 'With the big move coming, multiple reconstruction surgeries, and a long emotional/physical recovery in her foreseeable future, V is going to need all the help she can get,' Arbiso wrote. As of Friday afternoon, nearly $12,000 was raised to help Poggi. She also hopes that her unfortunate experience will make others think twice before using the specific fire pits. 'I really want people to know the danger of using an alcohol-fueled pit cause' they are so common. We owned I think three of them,' Poggi warned. Several brands of tabletop alcohol-fueled fire pits are sold online. Some are fueled by gel fuel, wood, wood pellets, and propane. Just last year, multiple tabletop fire pits were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Three sheriff's deputies killed in accidental blast while moving explosives at Los Angeles County training facility

A bomb squad was moving some explosives onto a training base when the blast occurred, a source told the Los Angeles Times. The compound houses the sheriff's department's bomb squad.
