UAE's ‘Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace' institutionalised as ICAO annual event
22 July 2025 12:40 ABU DHABI (WAM) The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), during its 235th Session, has officially adopted the UAE's Global Sustainable Aviation Marketplace (GSAM) as an institutionalised annual event under ICAO's official calendar, marking a rare recognition for a state-initiated concept to evolve into a regular, internationally supported launched in Abu Dhabi in February 2025 on the sidelines of the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS), the GSAM initiative aims to accelerate sustainable practices in global aviation by bringing together stakeholders from across the ecosystem, including airlines, manufacturers, regulators and investors, to drive the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), low-carbon aviation fuels (LCAF), and climate finance solutions under the ICAO (Finvest Hub).ICAO's decision reflects the country's dedicated efforts to establish the event and secure its formal integration into the organisation's global reflects the UAE's growing influence in shaping the future of sustainable aviation and its ability to deliver scalable, institutional solutions to global of Economy and Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, said, "Thanks to the guidance of our wise leadership, the UAE continues to lead the civil aviation sector both regionally and internationally. On the sidelines of the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2025 in Dubai, Al-Awadhi praised the UAE's rapid progress, world-class infrastructure, and highly efficient operations. He highlighted the country's fully integrated aviation ecosystem—including airlines, airports, ground services, safety, and security—as an example even developed nations look to. He also noted the UAE's smooth visa procedures and exceptional passenger services as key strengths. Crucially, Al-Awadhi pointed to the UAE's leadership in sustainable aviation, particularly in the development of Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF). Unlike Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), LCAF is derived from conventional sources but emits significantly less carbon. 'The UAE is a leader in the development of LCAF,' he said, adding that the fuel remains under study and development. Looking ahead, IATA forecasts air traffic growth in the Gulf and Middle East to hit 9% in 2025—well above the global average of 5.6%. He noted that the country has established itself as a role model—even for developed nations—due to its integrated and well-coordinated aviation ecosystem. He highlighted that this system includes airlines, airports, ground services, security, and safety, all functioning at high levels of efficiency. Additionally, he pointed to the UAE's streamlined visa procedures and the exceptional treatment of passengers at its airports, which reflect the nation's commitment to quality and world-class service standards. He confirmed that the UAE is taking a leading role on the global stage in developing Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), which, unlike Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), is derived from conventional sources but has lower carbon emissions. Aviation sector contributes 18.2% to UAE's GDP: IATA
DUBAI: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released a study quantifying the substantial value that aviation (including aviation-related tourism) generated for the UAE in terms of jobs and economic activity in 2023. According to the study, the economic impact in the UAE includes US$92 billion, contributing 18.2% to GDP (total impact including wider supply chain, employee spending, and tourism activities), 992,000 jobs (total impact including wider supply chain, employee spending, and tourism activities), 74,500 employed directly by airlines, with a further 132,300 employed elsewhere in aviation and 297,300 employed in aviation-related tourism and 1 million tonnes of air cargo handled in 2023. 'The UAE is a critical hub for global connectivity. And the benefits of its super connector role brings trade, tourism, investment, and jobs to the UAE. The leadership of the UAE has a strategic vision for aviation, supported by smart regulation and investment in world-class infrastructure. Supporting nearly a million jobs and 18.2% of GDP, aviation makes an enormous contribution to the UAE's prosperity—both culturally and economically. And we can be confident that this contribution will strengthen as the UAE continues to facilitate opportunities for aviation to thrive,' said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director-General. Building on its position as a global aviation leader, the UAE is well-placed to progress in three priority areas: Sustainability: The UAE has been a leader in the development of Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF) and is targeting an annual production of 700 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030. IATA looks forward to the potential for even broader collaboration with the UAE, in pursuit of opportunities to advance progress towards aviation's net zero carbon emissions by 2050 goal such as the recently launched SAF Registry (operated by CADO). Infrastructure: As the UAE continues to invest in world class-infrastructure to meet future demand, particularly with the development of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) and Zayed International Airport (AUH), it is critical to work with industry to remain a cost competitive hub for airlines and passengers. Workforce: The UAE is making significant investments in aviation training to ensure a skilled workforce to support growth opportunities. Maintaining a sustainable pipeline of aviation professionals will further strengthen the UAE's status as a global aviation hub. As part of this effort, a new IATA training centre was recently opened in Abu Dhabi.
