Mets vs. Padres predictions: MLB player props, picks, odds Tuesday

After a long wait, Sean Manaea has been excellent for the Mets. The southpaw was sidelined in spring training with an oblique strain and was later slowed by a bone fragment in his elbow, but finally made his 2025 debut before the MLB All-Star break. He's been lights out ever since, posting a 2.19 ERA over three starts as the Mets ease him in ahead of the stretch run. In 12 ⅓ innings, Manaea has struck out 13.1 batters per nine innings while allowing just 5.8 hits per nine. He's yielded one run in each of his outings. The veteran southpaw gets a good matchup Tuesday night on the road against a former team in the Padres, who haven't hit well this season despite their star-studded lineup. San Diego has just a .686 on-base plus slugging against left-handers this season with a 95 wRC+. Last June, Manaea allowed just one run and four hits over five innings while striking out seven against a similar Padres squad. New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea (59) throws during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels at Citi Field in Corona, N.Y., on July 23, 2025. Gordon Donovan/NurPhoto/Shutterstock The Padres have been one of the better teams in baseball at avoiding strikeouts against lefties, punching out just 19.2 percent of the time, so I'm targeting another way to bet on Manaea to pitch well Tuesday. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The Mets have handled Manaea with kid gloves as he builds himself back up, allowing him to throw more than 70 pitches just once – his last time out when he threw 82 pitches over five innings against the Angels. Manaea might not go deep into this game, but I expect him to pitch well against a light-hitting lineup. Slugger Eugenio Suárez interested in Detroit Tigers return as trade deadline approaches
ATLANTA — The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to be sellers at the July 31 trade deadline, which means two-time All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez is likely to be on the move. Suárez, an impending free agent, entered the second half of the 2025 season hitting .250 with 31 home runs and a National League-leading 78 RBIs through 95 games, with an .889 OPS. In late April, he became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four homers in a game. The 34-year-old has been one of the best right-handed sluggers in the 2025 season. And he already knows where he wants to play. The Detroit Tigers. "To finish where everything started, it would be cool," Suárez said Monday, July 14, just one day before participating in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. "It would mean a lot to me." WHAT HAPPENED: No positives from Tigers in All-Star Game as AL loses Home Run Derby tiebreaker Nearly 17 years ago, the Tigers signed Suárez out of Venezuela for a $10,000 bonus during the 2008 international signing period. He climbed through the minor leagues — from the Venezuelan Summer League to Triple-A Toledo — before making his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2014. That debut came June 4, 2014, against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park. He appeared in 85 games that season, hitting .242 with four home runs. On Dec. 11, 2014, the Tigers traded Suárez (and pitching prospect Jonathon Crawford) to the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Alfredo Simón. "Since I was there, it's been a lot different," Suárez said, comparing the Tigers of the 2010s to the 2025 Tigers. "It's a new team with a lot of young guys and a lot of talent. I think they have a really good chance to make it more than the playoffs this year." ABS TO MLB? Tarik Skubal shares opinion on ABS challenge system after using it in All-Star Game Coming out of the All-Star break, the Tigers hold a 59-38 record and an 11½-game lead in the American League Central, but they could use upgrades: a swing-and-miss reliever (or two) and a right-handed hitting third baseman. Suárez thinks the Tigers can win the World Series in 2025. He is still searching for his first championship after losing in the 2014 ALDS with the Tigers, the 2020 NL wild card with the Reds and the 2022 ALDS with the Seattle Mariners. "They got, for me, the best pitcher in the league right now: Tarik Skubal," Suárez said. "They got a bunch of good players. I think they really have a chance to win it all this year." [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] For the Tigers, utility man Zach McKinstry — who replaced Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña in the All-Star Game — serves as the primary third baseman, though he has played six positions this season, including more than 200 innings in the outfield. McKinstry is a candidate for regression in the final two-plus months: he hit .285 with an .836 OPS in his first 88 games after entering 2025 with a .220 batting average and a .643 OPS over the first 387 games of his career. It makes sense for the Tigers to pursue Suárez at the July 31 trade deadline. "We never know," said Suárez, a .249 hitter with a .794 OPS in his 12-year MLB career, spanning 1,566 games. "Baseball is baseball. I might be finishing where everything started. It doesn't sound crazy. We'll see." If Suárez lands elsewhere at the trade deadline — with the Mariners, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees among the potential suitors — the Tigers would still have another opportunity to acquire him in free agency this offseason. He is "definitely" interested in joining the Tigers. "All 30 teams are going to be on the list," Suárez said, "and Detroit is going to be one of those." Gleyber Torres: Detroit Tigers trade for Eugenio Suárez would be 'really, really good'
Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres wants to be teammates with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez for the remainder of the 2025 season. It could happen within a couple of days. The Tigers are one of many teams interested in acquiring Suárez from the Diamondbacks before the MLB trade deadline, set for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31. Other teams in the mix include the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners. "If he comes here at some point, it's going to be awesome," said Torres, a former teammates of Suárez with Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. "He treats people the right way. He's easy to talk to. He always wants to help the players. It would be a really, really good addition for us." LET'S MAKE A DEAL: Eugenio Suárez trade rumors: What Tigers could give up to get him from Diamondbacks Suárez, a 12-year MLB veteran, is hitting .248 with 36 home runs, an MLB-leading 87 RBIs, 29 walks (6.7% walk rate) and 116 strikeouts (26.8% strikeout rate) across 105 games. He becomes a free agent after the 2025 season, just like Torres. In December 2024, Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Tigers. Meanwhile, Suárez is completing an eight-year, $79 million contract extension that he signed in March 2018. "I think he's a better person than player," said Torres, an eight-year MLB veteran. "I have a really good relationship with him. He is a humble guy, an awesome person. I've known him for many years. Our relationship is really good." Suárez has said he wants to play for the Tigers. The Tigers signed Suárez out of Venezuela for a $10,000 bonus during the 2008 international signing period. He made his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2014. After 85 games, the Tigers traded Suárez to the Reds. "To finish where everything started, it would be cool," Suárez said in mid-July at the All-Star Game. "It would mean a lot to me." WHAT GENO WANTS: Slugger Eugenio Suárez interested in Tigers return as trade deadline approaches Whether it's Suárez or not, Torres expects the Tigers' front office — led by president of baseball operations Scott Harris — to improve the MLB roster ahead of the trade deadline. The Tigers have a 62-46 record to control a nine-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central — trailing only the Toronto Blue Jays by 1½ games for the AL's best record. Inside the clubhouse, the players are focused on helping lead the franchise to its first World Series win since 1984. "Whatever good players come into our team to help and bring us to the postseason and a championship, I think it's the best deal," Torres said. "I don't know if it's going to be Eugenio or not, but if Eugenio comes here, it's going to be awesome in every aspect." Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold.
