Azizulhasni Continues World Championship Bid With Custom-built Bike
PUCHONG, July 23 (Bernama) -- Despite now riding as a professional, national cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang continues to use his specially customised WX-R Vorteq bicycle as he targets a spot at the UCI World Championships in October. The Pocket Rocketman said the National Sports Council (MSN) has given full approval for him to keep using the bike, as it fits his body and supports his KPI goals for the 2026 Asian and Commonwealth Games. 'So far, I've been given permission by MSN to use it, so there's no issue. The bike was designed to fit my body, so I don't think anyone else could use it,' he told Bernama after being named Volkswagen Malaysia's first brand ambassador. bootstrap slideshow He said the only other rider who might be able to use the same design is Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, who already rides a Vorteq model. 'The other riders are taller and bigger, like Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom,' he added. Azizulhasni said his return to Malaysia was to undergo training with the national squad in hopes of impressing technical director John Beasley and earning a spot for the world meet. 'Beasley is evaluating my performance to see which tournaments I'll go to. Hopefully, I can take part in one or two competitions before the World Championships,' he said. While leaving individual event decisions to the coaches, Azizulhasni said his main focus remains the team sprint, part of his original comeback plan. 'But we have to see if it's still relevant. If I can go for the team event, great. If not, and I get a slot in the individual event, why not? It still depends on the coaches' plan,' he added. Beasley earlier confirmed that Azizulhasni is not currently listed for individual events in the World Championships in Santiago, Chile from Oct 15–19, but could be in the team sprint if he qualifies on merit.

David Mitchell's heartbreaking three-word confession about wife Victoria Coren
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info David Mitchell has opened up about the profound melancholy that loomed over his earlier years, which he discusses in his memoir 'Back Story'. In his heartrending disclosure, the Peep Show actor confessed to being "hopelessly in love" with Victoria Coren, who is now his wife, harbouring his unspoken affections for years before they finally got together, despite her initially rejecting him. "I was hopelessly in love. I told no one about it," he reveals in his book. "I didn't tell my closest friends or my parents of the enormous sadness that overshadowed my life." The adoration he felt for Victoria lingered in silence until she consented to a date years later. "I waited three years. Isn't that weird? Aren't I odd? I can't explain it other than to say I couldn't do anything else," he reflects in his writing. "If only I'd known I just had to wait three years... I would gladly have suffered ten times as much." Although he was devastated, the sharp-witted star kept his anguish well-concealed behind his characteristic self-effacing humour. "The problem is, I hate the sort of dating thing," he admits, reports the Express. "I just find it incredibly awkward... I don't dislike being single enough to put myself through the pain." David and Victoria, now host of BBC's Only Connect, instantly hit it off at their fatefully timed meeting during a Halloween party in 2007, having been introduced by fellow comedian David Baddiel. Victoria confessed: "He specifically said to me, 'There's David Mitchell over there, I think you should probably marry him, I'll get the ball rolling by introducing you. I thought that was ridiculous but, a couple of hours later, I thought I would probably marry him," as reported by MSN. Initially, Victoria brushed off the suggestion, but by the end of the night, she was sold on the idea. Despite their instant connection, it took several years before they embarked on their first official date. "I thought that was ridiculous, but a couple of hours later, I thought I would probably marry him," she reminisces. Although they hit it off immediately, the timing wasn't quite right. Victoria was still grieving the loss of her father, Alan Coren, who died from cancer in 2007. David patiently bided his time, never pressuring her but always nurturing the hope of a shared future. Their first official date eventually happened in 2010, and they tied the knot in 2012. David has never shied away from expressing his deep love for Victoria. "I am just incredibly proud that someone like Victoria wants to be with me," he declares. "She has these amazing qualities, but fundamentally, we clicked. I fell in love with her." In his memoir, he portrays her as "too wonderful" and "too right for me." The couple celebrated the birth of their two daughters - Barbara Elizabeth in 2015 and June Violet in 2023.

National Science Week targets 300,000 participants in Lahad Datu
LAHAD DATU (July 10): The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is targeting over 300,000 participants for the National Science Week (MSN) 2025 programme. Deputy Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the programme featured over 100 engaging activities centred on science, technology and innovation. 'This year, MOSTI will continue organising MSN with a more comprehensive and targeted approach through three main methods, including the organisation of the MSN Carnival in six targeted zones, among them Lahad Datu, Sabah. 'The second method involves implementing the Kembara Minggu Sains Negara (MSN Kembara) in rural schools through the Kembara Sains Borneo and Rehlah Sains programmes, while the third is the MSN Sponsorship initiative (MSN Taja), which supports government agencies, the private sector and all stakeholders in cultivating interest in science,' he said. He said this in his speech when officiating the Sabah Zone MSN Carnival at Dewan Perdana here today. Mohammad Yusof said MSN was among MOSTI's strategic initiatives to bring science, technology and innovation closer to the people, in line with Malaysia's aspiration to become a high-tech nation by 2030. Speaking to reporters after the launch, he said the MSN Carnival complements existing co-curricular activities in schools. 'The hands-on and interactive approach is expected to attract visitors. As of this morning, it is understood that over 200 school students have attended the MSN Carnival. This shows growing public awareness of science, technology and innovation,' he said. Year Four pupil Amalania Mohd Ridhwan Wafi described her visit to the carnival as enjoyable, particularly due to her strong interest in science at school. 'I came here with five friends and a teacher. We got to see the Dash robot, which we've learnt about in class. Before this, I had only seen it on the phone but today I saw it in person,' she said. For Form Three student Qistina Nabila Jamri of Sekolah Menengah Sains (SMS) Lahad Datu, the carnival provided her with new insights into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field. 'I'm really interested in science at school. I got the highest marks in our recent test. Studying science isn't just about being smart; it also teaches us survival skills. I hope events like this will continue,' she said. Soffiah Harun, a teacher at the Community Development Department (KEMAS) preschool in Kampung Telisai, Tungku here, said the MSN Carnival could help foster a love for science among children through science literacy. 'My colleagues and I brought 17 children, aged three and four, to the carnival to give them early exposure to science culture. 'Our school is located more than 100 kilometres from the city. We left school at 7.50 am and reached here by 9.20 am. The kids were really happy with all the science, technology and innovation activities at the carnival,' she said. Among the interesting activities held during the programme were Science Trivia, World of the Mind, Ai4Belia, Insect Lab: Touch, Learn, Discover, and a talk titled 'Ceritera Sebalik Radas: Teknologi Kepintaran Buatan Kawan@Lawan'. The MSN was organised with the support of the National Planetarium, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Petrosains Discovery Centre Sdn Bhd, and main sponsor Yayasan MR DIY.-Bernama

Lord of the Rings Director aims to revive New Zealand's Moa bird species extinct for 600 years
Peter Jackson is collaborating with Colossal Biosciences to revive New Zealand's Moa bird species, which has been extinct for 600 years. Known for directing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, Jackson has invested in the Texas-based biotech company to support the potential revival of the giant Moa bird. These flightless birds span nine unique species, with some standing up to 3.6 metres tall and weighing as much as 500lbs. Colossal Biosciences is working with the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre in New Zealand to collect Moa bones for DNA sampling. Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh have already gathered around 400 Moa bones, which have been sampled for DNA to assist in creating a complete genome. 'Fran and I have a collection of around 400 Moa bones, and we've already sampled them for DNA,' Jackson told IGN. 'I see my role over the next year or two as gathering as many more bones as I can. The more bones, the better the genome.' Jackson added, 'I've always loved the idea of de-extinction. Particularly, since the science can also have huge benefits with endangered species too.' The Moa project is a personal passion for Jackson, who told MSN, 'The movies are my day job, and the Moa are my fun thing I do.' Colossal Biosciences has recently been in the spotlight for similar projects. The company's work aims to use de-extinction science to support biodiversity and conservation efforts globally.
