Will Reeve reveals first impression of Superman David Corenswet
Up, up, and away! Will Reeve, who is the son of the late Christopher Reeve, recently sat down with The Post for an exclusive interview ahead of the new 'Superman' movie, now in theaters. While Will, 33, discussed everything from his cameo in the new superhero flick to how the cast and crew of the film paid tribute to his legendary father, he also revealed which of the many iconic Superman costumes is his favorite. 21 Will Reeve at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Superman' on July 7. Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP 'I think the classic, with the cape and the trunks on the outside and the big red boots and the vibrant colors,' he said. 'That works for me.' Even though Will's famous father donned one of the most iconic Superman outfits in 'Superman: The Movie' and its three sequels, the outfit has a lengthy history. Before Christopher Reeve wore the blue, red and yellow ensemble for the first time in 1978, the costume was worn by Kirk Alyn in 1948 and 1950 before George Reeves in 1951. Both Alyn and Reeves' costumes were made of knit wool with muted colors to film in black and white. THA/Shutterstock After Will's father donned the red cape one last time for 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' in 1987, it was put on ice until actor Brandon Routh picked up the Man of Steel mantle for 'Superman Returns' in 2006. Routh's costume marked the first time a live-action Superman suit was given texture. During an interview with CBS News in 2006, costume designer Louise Mingenbach described the outfit as 'high-tech and ultra-thin' and made of a spandex blend she called Milliskin. More recently, the Krypton crest was worn by Henry Cavill until, finally, David Corenswet was cast as the latest Man of Tomorrow for James Gunn's new blockbuster. Where Cavill's thick suit was woven with multiple layers of thin mesh, chainmail, and foam latex, per costume designer Michael Wilkinson, Corenswet's was created with custom 3D-printed fabric. Pictures Although Will doesn't own any of his father's ensembles, he noted that one of the original costumes is where it belongs: on display at the Smithsonian Museum. 'I don't personally have anything from 'Superman,' but I think something that's a great honor for our family is that the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, has one of the original costumes that my dad wore,' he shared. 'I think that any Superman memorabilia, or items from the set, are better served in public display for the millions of people who love the character, and who loved my father more than it might have on my mantle,' he added. Warner Bros. via Getty Images 'In May of 2024, I visited the set in Atlanta, where they filmed much of the movie, and I got to meet David and Nick on that day and watch them work for a little while,' the ABC News correspondent recalled. 'And it was a treat,' Will continued. 'I felt so welcomed and included. And I did say to David in that moment where we met, I wanted him to know that I, my brother, and sister, and our whole family are just excited for them.' Getty Images One thing the younger Reeve made clear when he met Corenswet for the first time was that he and his siblings are 'not the gatekeepers of Superman' despite their father's seemingly inseparable connection to the character. 'I keep saying we're not the gatekeepers of Superman, just because our dad is so inextricably linked with that role,' Will told The Post. 'So I didn't want anyone involved in this new project to think that we were anything but supportive and excited as fans and friends.' 'I think that Superman, the character, is a bit quirky and slightly corny, earnest. Pure of heart, so on and so forth. And that shines through.' 'I think that that was my dad's greatest work in Superman was convincing audiences to believe not only that a man could fly, but also that the same being was also Clark Kent, who was a bit bumbling and awkward.' ‘Superman' flies to a $122 million opening
NEW YORK, July 14, (AP): In a bid to kick off a new era for DC Studios, James Gunn's "Superman' opened with $122 million in US and Canada ticket sales over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. DC and Warner Bros. had a lot riding on "Superman.' While the Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel Studios has had its own share of struggles, the superheroes of DC have recently found mostly kryptonite in theaters. Films like "Joker: Folie à Deux,' "The Flash' and "Shazam! Fury of the Gods' all flopped. But "Superman,' written and directed by Gunn, is intended as a new start. It's the first release fully steered by Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, since they were handed the keys to DC's superhero cinematic universe. And while Gunn turned "Guardians of the Galaxy' into a massive success for Marvel, his irreverent, idiosyncratic touch made the director - once a B-movie filmmaker with Troma Entertainment - an unlikely steward for one of the movies' most bankable and beloved brands. The roughly on-target opening was the third largest of 2025, and the first DC title to surpass $100 million in its opening weekend since "Wonder Woman' in 2017. Warner Bros. could also celebrate a unique hot streak: "Superman' is their fifth movie in a row to open over $45 million. "It's quite a win for DC Studios,' said Jeffrey Goldstein, chief of distribution for Warner Bros. "We needed to get the trust of the fanbase, and we didn't have it. They were clear to us that we needed to take a step back and reinvent ourselves.' Ticket sales were relatively soft for "Superman' overseas. In 78 international markets, it grossed $95 million. In China, it collected just $6.6 million. David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe, called the international performance the only ding against the otherwise strong "Superman' debut. "Thus far, the foreign openings are not equal to domestic," said Gross. "Superman has always been identified as a quintessentially American character and story, and in some parts of the world, America is currently not enjoying its greatest popularity.' As an American icon, "Superman' also attracted political discourse at home. Some right-wing commentators criticized the movie as "woke' after Gunn described the superhero from Krypton as "an immigrant.' On X, the White House posted an image of President Donald Trump as Superman. In "Superman,' which cost about $225 million to make, Gunn steers the Man of Steel in a drastically different tonal direction than in previous iterations from filmmaker Zack Snyder. Skipping the Kansas origin story, the film instead picks up with Superman ( David Corenswet ) after his first defeat. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. The "Superman' debut didn't come close to besting the $166 million launch for Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,' in 2016. But it did open higher, not accounting for inflation, than Snyder's "Man of Steel.' That film debuted with $116 million in 2013. But while Snyder's films were often unloved by critics, largely good reviews greeted Gunn's "Superman.' On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 82% fresh - the best for the franchise since the first two movies with Christopher Reeve: "Superman' (1978) and "Superman II' (1980). Audiences gave it an "A-' CinemaScore. "Superman' faced sizeable competition too. Last week's top film, "Jurassic World Rebirth,' slid to second place with $40 million. With "Superman' soaking up many large-format screens, Universal Pictures' seventh "Jurassic' film slipped a steep 57% from its opening weekend. Starring Scarlett Johansson, "Jurassic World Rebirth' got off to a thunderous $318.3 million global start. In two weeks, it's amassed $529.5 million worldwide. Also still in the mix is Apple Studios' biggest box-office success yet, "F1.' Joseph Kosinski's Formula One action thriller, starring Brad Pitt, came in third with $13 million in its third weekend. The film, distributed by Warner Bros., has collected $393.4 million globally in three weeks. But it also carries a hefty price tag of roughly $250 million, plus at least $100 million in promotion.

On the opening day, James Gunn's film earned an estimated Rs. 7 crores at the domestic box office, and by the end of the first weekend, the film collected Rs. 32 crores (gross) across 3037 screens, marking the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in India. Superman also recorded the third-highest opening for a DC movie in the country after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Batman. James Gunn's Superman is also soaring high at the international box office. As per Variety reports, the film collected $122 million in North America across 4135 theatres and earned $95 million from 79 international markets, marking a global opening of $217 million. Domestically, the film surpassed Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, which collected $116.7 million, to become the biggest-ever launch for a solo Superman film. Among all the releases so far this year, Gunn's Superman is the third film to debut above the $100 million mark, securing a place right behind Warner Bros's own Minecraft Movie and Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, which collected $162.8 million and $146 million, respectively. The film has also outperformed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to become Gunn's second-best domestic opening, trailing behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which collected $146.5 million. Gunn's Superman features David Corenswet as Superman, or Clark Kent, marking a significant departure from Henry Cavill's portrayal of the character.
