Taylor Swift Shares Another Cryptic Countdown After ‘Showgirl' Announcement — What's Coming Next?
Taylor Swift is at it again. Less than a week after a mysterious countdown went live on her website and ticked down to what would turn out to be an announcement for her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, the pop star has once again unveiled a cryptic timer heralding yet another piece of major news — but what could it be? Fans began noticing the new countdown on Monday morning (Aug. 18). Whereas the album announcement timer had an orange backdrop, the new countdown is set against a sparkly purple wallpaper. More from Billboard Everything We Know About Taylor Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl' (So Far) Taylor Swift's 'Life of a Showgirl' News Has Sabrina Carpenter, Caitlin Clark & More Stars 'Freaking Out' Taylor Swift Reveals 'Life of a Showgirl' Release Date, Album Cover & Track List Featuring Sabrina Carpenter Giving no clues as to what will happen once the clock reaches 00:00:00, Swift's latest countdown simply states that it will expire at 2 p.m. ET on Monday. There's no telling what the 14-time Grammy winner has in store for fans this time. The musician has already bombarded Swifties with information over the past week, revealing on Aug. 12 that she had a new album titled The Life of a Showgirl on the way before sharing its cover art, release date and tracklist — featuring a Sabrina Carpenter collaboration — the following day. At the same time, four different variants of the LP became available for pre-order on Swift's site, including the 'Sweat and Vanilla Perfume' edition, the 'It's Frightening' edition, the 'It's Rapturous' version and the 'It's Beautiful' edition. '[The album is] a lot more upbeat, and it's a lot more fun pop excitement,' Swift said of the project on an Aug. 13 episode of boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast, where she shared more details about her next era. 'My main goals were melodies that were so infectious, you're almost angry at it … This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time.' There are still several weeks before Showgirl drops on Oct. 3, so the new countdown could mean anything. Will it lead to a lead single announcement? A music video? More alternate versions of the album? Swifties have theorized about all of the above, but the overwhelming feeling in the fandom is pure excitement at what the Eras Tour headliner could possibly have in store next. 'I AM NOT READY FOR WHATEVER THIS COUNTDOWN LEADS TO,' one Swiftie wrote on X. Another person pleaded, 'WHAT DOES IT MEAN TAYLOR?!' Wordle hints today for #1,521: Clues and answer for Monday, August 18
Hey, there! Welcome to the start of a new week. Here's hoping it's a terrific one for you. As ever, there's a new Wordle to solve today. For those looking for some help to figure out the mystery word, here's our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Monday's puzzle (#1,521). It may be that you're a Wordle newcomer and you're not completely sure how to play the game. We're here to help with that too. What is Wordle? Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. There is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game's success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it's little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. How to play Wordle To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day's secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren't in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. However, you can still use those letters in subsequent guesses. You'll only have six guesses to find each day's word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It's also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT's website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets and Discord. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. How to play Wordle more than once a day If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication's games, you don't have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You'll have access to an archive of more than 1,500 previous Wordle games. So if you're a relative newcomer, you'll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day's game. Here's what happened when they tried to cancel me
The whole brouhaha ended on Monday when the Polari Prize abandoned this year's award entirely, an interesting example of self-cancellation, to focus instead on 'increasing representation of trans and gender non-conforming judges on the panels'. I don't doubt that the founders and organisers have been put under just as much pressure over the last week as I have but this statement worries me. It suggests that gays and lesbians who do not conform to a specific gender ideology will be rooted out and excluded from future consideration, the court effectively stacked against them in this obsessive need to amplify the voices of trans people, a strange fixation considering one would get less amplification at a Metallica concert. Winning a prize isn't of major importance to me, although, of course, it would have been nice. I'm halfway through a career that's exceeded all my expectations, but it's worth considering how this new emphasis might damage younger LGB writers and their right to both hold and express perfectly valid, entirely legal opinions on any subject. What saddens me most, however, is that from its dramatic opening to its disappointing conclusion, no one from the Polari Prize ever had the decency to contact me. Had they done so, perhaps a happier resolution might have been found. I don't feel any antipathy towards the debut writers who withdrew their titles. Indeed, I had a very polite and respectful email exchange with one on Friday evening, where we explained our positions and, I think, parted amicably. That said, as someone who's been part of this industry for 33 years and pretty much seen it all, I do think they should reflect on how they would like to be treated should their names ever be maligned, their characters misrepresented, or their words twisted out of all context. If the scolds ever come for them, I hope they receive the same support I did from other writers and the global publishing world. Honestly, my phone hasn't been this hot since I was last on Tinder. They might also ask themselves whether they want to be known for their books or for the cartoon characters others will create in their likeness. After all, should another of their books ever be nominated for an award, do they really want the judges to consider anything other than the beauty of their writing, the brilliance of their storytelling and the power of their ideas? For the record, there was never a possibility that I would withdraw. To have done so would have endorsed a mob mentality, ensuring that, going forward, all writers who made the list would be vetted by their colleagues for wrongthink. In true Trumpian style, their past publications and social media posts would have been scoured for anything that went against the orthodoxy. Novelists would have been given free rein to spy on each other and report their neighbours. Soon, other prizes would have followed suit, and it wouldn't have been long until those lucky enough to be given a publishing deal would have gone through similar scrutiny from the moment those deals were announced. I couldn't be a party to that; it would have been the death of ideas. We operate in the books world. We're supposed to believe in free speech and freedom of thought. We're meant to treat each other with respect, not look for ways to tear each other down. To value the written word and not denigrate, insult and push people to a point where those who are emotionally vulnerable might not survive their attacks. Most of us have the maturity to understand that, but it's clear that some, particularly those at the start of their careers, still have to learn it. It's the difference between playing the part of a decent person on social media and actually being one in real life.
