Fighter jets scrambled, flares fired after planes violate Trump airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey

Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a civilian plane Sunday after it entered restricted airspace over President Trump's property in Bedminster, New Jersey, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said, one of seven aircraft to violate the airspace over the weekend. Three civilian planes flew in the restricted airspace Saturday, and there were four more violations on Sunday, including one that was intercepted by fighter aircraft, NORAD said in a statement. Flares were deployed to get the pilot's attention, NORAD said on social media, and the plane was safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft. "The flares – which may have been visible to the public – are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground," NORAD said in a separate statement. "Flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to the people on the ground when dispensed." According to the president's schedule, Mr. Trump was at Bedminster on Sunday and scheduled to leave Sunday evening for the White House. NORAD, which noted previously that 11 aircraft violated the same airspace over July 4 weekend, urged pilots to pay attention to Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by the FAA. "Ignorance is not a defense," NORAD warned before the weekend when announcing the airspace restrictions. The command routinely issues temporary flight restriction (TFR) zones for Mr. Trump's Bedminster retreat as well as his property at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida. Air Force fighter jets have also intercepted civilian aircraft flying in the temporarily restricted airspace over Mr. Trump's Florida home this year, after the president took office on Jan. 20.

A temporary flight restriction zone was in place over the New Jersey golf course when a pilot flew into in at around 12:50 p.m. ET on Sunday. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) aircraft used flares to get the pilots' attention and then escorted the plane out of the zone, NORAD said in a statement. It was the second interception made by NORAD in the restriction zone on Sunday, and the fifth of the weekend. NORAD said in a statement: "General aviation pilots are reminded to verify all Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Fly Informed before every flight." Repeated airspace incursion over Trump's Bedminster golf club: Fighter jets intercept civilian aircraft; seven violations during weekend

Seven violations of Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) were reported over the weekend near Bedminster, New Jersey, where US President Donald Trump was reportedly staying at Trump National Golf Club. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Pilots: There have been seven TFR violations near Bedminster, NJ this weekend. Avoid trouble - make sure to check NOTAMs before you fly to stay clear and compliant,' said First Air Force through a post on X. Fighter jets were scrambled on Sunday to intercept a civilian aircraft that breached restricted airspace overTrump's Bedminster retreat, reports Fox News. The aircraft entered the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zone around 12.50 pm ET, as per the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD). 'The civilian aircraft violated the TFR at approximately 12.50 pm Eastern Daylight Time. The civilian aircraft was safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft,' reported NORAD. NORAD said its aircraft used flares to signal a civilian plane that had entered the restricted airspace, before escorting it out of the area. The incident marked the second airspace violation of the day, with another unauthorized aircraft also entering the TFR zone earlier. The flares "are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground,' added NORAD. "General aviation pilots are reminded to verify all Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Fly Informed before every flight; in the instance of the Bedminster, New Jersey region, specifically FAA NOTAMs 9839, 9840, 9841 and 9842," NORAD said, as reported by Fox News. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now NORAD uses a multi-layered defense system that includes radars, satellites, and fighter jets to detect and respond to potential threats, as per DVIDS. The identification and interception of the civilian aircraft highlights how NORAD carries out its aerospace warning and control responsibilities for both the United States and Canada. In July, too, a NORAD fighter jet intercepted a civilian aircraft that entered the restricted airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey, where Trump was spending the 4th of July weekend.

"General aviation pilots are reminded to verify all Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Fly Informed before every flight," NORAD advised. Trump was reportedly out of town at the time of the incident and expected to return to the White House later that day, as per Fox News. NORAD said it uses a network of radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to identify and respond to potential threats in US and Canadian airspace. This event follows a series of similar airspace breaches earlier this year. In March, three civilian aircraft violated restricted airspace over Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, which led NORAD to deploy F-16 fighter jets. Flares were again used to alert the pilots, and each aircraft was safely guided out of the area. In mid-February, airspace violations were also reported near Mar-a-Lago on Presidents Day (February 17), February 15, and in nearby Wellington on February 18.
