Last Night in Baseball: Goldschmidt Returned to St. Louis and the Yankees Lineup

Major League Baseball Last Night in Baseball: Goldschmidt Returned to St. Louis and the Yankees Lineup Published Aug. 18, 2025 11:07 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link There is always baseball happening — almost too much baseball for one person to follow themselves. Don't worry, we're here to help you by figuring out what you missed but shouldn't have. Here are all the best moments from the weekend in Major League Baseball : Goldschmidt's return to St. Louis goes well for New York The Yankees entered the weekend just half-a-game up on the Cleveland Guardians, and it looked like it was the latter who had the momentum, considering how well they've been playing for some time now, compared to New York, which has been playing under .500 ball since before the summer began. The Cardinals were apparently just what the Yankees needed to get back on track, though, and at the same time that the Guardians were swept by the Braves, too. With sweeps in both series, New York was able to bump their wild card lead to 3.5 games, leaving Cleveland just half-a-game up on the Royals, too. Yankees' first baseman — and former Cardinals star — Paul Goldschmidt didn't play in the series opener thanks to a knee sprain suffered on Tuesday, but he made an appearance in the eighth in the second contest, and then started Sunday's game. He received a warm reception via a standing ovation from the Cardinals' faithful, and why not? Goldschmidt spent six years in St. Louis, batting .278/.360/.483 with 153 homers in his time there, and even won the 2022 NL MVP on account of leading the Senior Circuit in slugging (.577) and OPS+ (177), in a nearly 8-win season. ADVERTISEMENT Goldschmidt looked a lot like he did in St. Louis facing off against his former club, too. He went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run and an RBI each, bringing his season line up to .280/.334/.429. The Cardinals have now lost five in a row, and sit 5.5 back of the last wild card in the National League race. They are not out of it at this point by any means, not with 37 games left on the schedule, but Baseball Reference lists their chances of making the postseason at 3.1% now that they sit 61-64 after a sweep at the hands of the Yankees. They'll have to turn things around fast if they are to avoid missing the postseason for the sixth time in 10 years. The Dodgers swept the Padres There was, understandably, a lot of concern about the way the Dodgers had been playing of late, combined with the much more successful way that the rival Padres had been playing. San Diego even moved into sole possession of first place in the NL West on Thursday, on the strength of a roster upgraded at the trade deadline. When the two faced off over the weekend for a three-game series, though, it was all Los Angeles. The Dodgers swept the Padres, pushing their lead in the West back up to two games. The series was much closer than that suggests — Los Angeles won 3-2, 6-0 and 5-4 — but the standings don't care how much a team wins by. Those dubs are in the bank, as are San Diego's three new losses, and there is that much less time for the Padres to wrest the division from the Dodgers because of it. Mookie Betts was the hero on Sunday, as the Padres tied the game up in the top of the eighth, and Betts immediately put the Dodgers back up on top in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer to left field. Betts is having by far his worst season at the plate in the majors, but he's at least been able to contribute defensively, and at a high level: despite his first below-average season offensively, Betts is on pace to finish with a 3-win season, by wins above replacement. He hasn't been a drag on the Dodgers, basically, but if he can return to form offensively even a little bit before the end of the season — time for the postseason — then the Dodgers' lineup is going to look that much better. Raleigh had a better weekend than his team Pretty big weekend for the Big Dumper, as Cal Raleigh smacked two doubles and a home run on Friday against the Mets, helping the Mariners to an 11-9 victory. While Seattle would lose the next two contests, Raleigh couldn't be faulted for it. He had another two hits on Saturday, as well as a stolen base — his 14th of the year — and a pair of walks, and then on Sunday he went yard again for his 47th homer of the year as part of his third multi-hit game of the weekend. Raleigh is leading the majors in home runs, and his 102 RBIs are also tops. And for as unfortunate as losing a series to the August edition of the Mets is for any team, the Mariners do still hold the second wild card in the AL, and are half-a-game up on the Yankees for that spot despite the latter sweeping the Cardinals. Rockies take down the D'backs (and themselves) The Rockies won three of four from the Diamondbacks over the weekend, but of course they couldn't do it in a normal way. This is the 2025 Colorado Rockies we're talking about, which is why their game ended on Sunday with what was basically one player tackling another player. Now, to their credit, earlier in the season this happening would have resulted in that ball being dropped, and then probably thrown into the stands, or even into the Rockies' dugout into the face of one of their players. Here, though, Juan Mejia managed to avoid the fumble and keep possession of the ball, despite the hard hit. [Football terms.] Winning five of their last six has undone some of the damage of losing eight straight, so the Rockies are once again on pace to avoid setting the all-time losses record. They also have 38 games left on the schedule, though, and given the season they have had, maybe it's not time to pop the champagne just yet. Sorry, what? Catching a ball that has popped out of your glove is the old hotness. Meet the new, catching a ball in between your legs by just squeezing really tight and presumably praying the entire time. Jung Hoo Lee didn't catch the ball in his glove as much as stop it with the bottom of it, and then it fell and slowly rolled down his leg, until he was able to somehow trap it in between his legs while he himself rolled on the ground. He knew it was there, though, as he even stood up — very carefully — to show what he'd done. Hey, if it doesn't touch the ground, then it hasn't actually landed. Nothing says you need to catch the ball in your glove. The Brewers' win streak is over The Brewers managed to get their win streak to a franchise- and MLB-in-2025-best 14 wins in a row on Saturday, and they can thank Andrew Monasterio hitting a 3-run home run in extra innings for that. Try as they might, though, they couldn't secure No. 15. The Reds had a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning, and William Contreras hit a 2-run homer to put Milwaukee on top for the first time all game. The game wasn't being played in Milwaukee, however, so the Reds got a chance to tie things up in the bottom of the frame. Which they did! With runners on the corners and one out, backstop Jose Trevino lined a ball just over the head of Caleb Durbin at second base, scoring Will Benson. The Brewers would fail to score in the top of the 10th, and with Grant Anderson — who had just blown the save the inning before — still on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, the Reds would score once more by way of the single. Like with the Padres not losing to the Dodgers by all that much despite the sweep, the Reds shouldn't feel too terrible about this series. They had their own dramatic extra innings victory on Sunday, and while Friday was a high-scoring affair, it was 10-8, not a beatdown by Milwaukee. Of course, Cincinnati would rather win these games rather than lose them, but they sit 1.5 back of the third wild card despite having to face the buzzsaw that is the Brewers. There are worse ways to wake up on a Monday morning. Carroll crushed That's 474 feet off of the bat of Corbin Carroll you're about to see. Arizona's weekend didn't go so hot, but Carroll got all of that one, his 27th blast of the year. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? PRTU–TS Releases Poster for CPS Abolition Maha Dharna in Hyderabad

Gadwal: The Progressive Recognized Teachers Union of Telangana State (PRTU–TS), the largest teachers' union in Telangana, has intensified its movement demanding the abolition of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). As part of the state-wide agitation, the CPS Abolition Maha Dharna poster was officially released at the Mandal Resource Centre (MRC), Aiza on Saturday. The Maha Dharna will be held on September 1, 2025, at Indira Park, Hyderabad, under the leadership of the PRTU–TS State Committee. Teachers and employees working under CPS across Telangana are expected to participate in large numbers, marking it as one of the biggest demonstrations for pension rights in the state. Addressing the gathering during the poster release, District President Pacharla Thimmareddy and District General Secretary B.N. Venugopal strongly criticized the CPS, calling it 'an insecure and confusing scheme that threatens the future of employees.' They reminded that the Congress Party, which is presently in power in Telangana, had promised in its election manifesto to abolish CPS, and urged the government to honor its commitment immediately. 'Pension is not a charity; it is an employee's right. CPS must go, and OPS (Old Pension Scheme) should be restored for the security of employees after retirement,' the leaders asserted. District-Level Protest Programs To build momentum for the Maha Dharna, PRTU–TS announced a series of protest programs at the district level: August 26 & 27: Submission of representations to local MLAs demanding CPS abolition. August 28: Candlelight rallies at district headquarters. August 29: Bike rallies with slogans demanding OPS restoration. The union further declared that every CPS employee attending the Hyderabad Maha Dharna on September 1st must wear black as a symbol of protest — men in black shirts or T-shirts and women in black sarees or churidars. Leaders Appeal for Unity PRTU–TS leaders appealed to all CPS employees to actively participate in the movement and ensure its success. They reiterated the union's firm stand: 'CPS End – PRTU's Stand. No CPS – We want OPS.' The poster release program was attended by Aiza Mandal President R. Shiva Shankar Reddy, Mandal General Secretary K. Balakrishna, State Associate President D. Abel, District Associate President M. Ravi, and several other union leaders and teachers. The leaders expressed confidence that the Maha Dharna will be a 'historic struggle' in Telangana's employees' movement, sending a strong message to the government that CPS must be abolished without delay.

Bombay high court fines ex-deputy education director Rs 5L for withholding teacher's pension

Mumbai: Bombay high court imposed Rs 5 lakh cost on Sandeep Sangve, former deputy director of education (DDE), Mumbai region, for depriving a retired college teacher of pensionary benefits and directed him to pay the amount "from his pocket" to the Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund. Justices Ajey Gadkari and Milind Sathaye on July 24 said if the cost is not paid by Sangve, in that event, it shall be deducted from his salary. Five days after Sangve's transfer to BMC last month, he was suspended and an inquiry ordered into allegations against him as DDE. The School Education Department and DDE sought a review of HC's July 18, 2024, order to pay Anil Athawale pension under the old pension scheme (OPS) applicable to part-time teachers. DDE's June 2023 order said that he was not entitled to OPS as he was appointed full-time after the Nov 1, 2005, cutoff date. The judges said the only ground raised in the review petition, affirmed by Sangve, was that "facts regarding breakage in service" were not pointed to HC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Pleadings of both sides and record was considered before the order was passed. The judges said "breakage in service" was not even the reason for the June 2023 passed by "the same Mr Sandeep Sangve". Senior advocate Narendra Bandiwadekar, for Athawale, informed that in Oct 2024, the high court in 11 contempt petitions imposed Rs 3.3 lakh cost on Sangve for non-compliance of orders. The judges said "the officer appears to be habitual in violating" HC orders and "has scant respect for law of the land". Bandiwadekar said after Athawale pressed contempt for non-compliance of the July 2024 order, the review petition was filed. The judges said it clearly appears that Sangve with a "mala fide" intention directed the AGP to file it only to harass Athawale "none else". Athawale "as of today is struggling for his lawful pensionary benefits". He is entitled to it under OPS as per HC's order with interest from retirement date. "However the respondent (Athawale), a citizen of India, has been deprived of his legitimate dues due to the obstinate stand adopted by Sandeep Sangve... a govt servant," they said. Centre won't return NPS funds to Raj after OPS implementation

J aipur: Even after the implementation of Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in Rajasthan, the state govt will not receive the money from the employees' National Pension System (NPS) fund. The central govt has made it clear that there is no legal provision to return NPS money to the states. Currently, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) holds Rs 50,884 crore in NPS for Rajasthan employees, the highest among the five states implementing OPS in the country. The other four states are Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Punjab. In a written response to a question by CPI(M) MP Amraram from Sikar, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Lok Sabha that there is no provision under the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Act, 2013, read along with PFRDA (Exits and Withdrawals under the National Pension System) Regulations, 2015, and other relevant regulations, vide which the accumulated corpus of the subscribers towards NPS can be refunded and deposited back to the state govt. The minister also clarified that there is no proposal under consideration of the govt of India for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in respect of central govt employees. The govt moved away from OPS due to its unsustainable fiscal liability on the govt exchequer. Across the country, five states have reinstated OPS in place of NPS. The previous Gehlot govt in Rajasthan decided to implement OPS from 2023, and the BJP govt has maintained it. In Chhattisgarh, OPS has also been in effect since the Congress govt. As soon as OPS was implemented, the Gehlot govt requested funds from the centre. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). How scrapping remote work could affect Ontario public sector recruitment

Ontario's move to order public servants to work from the office full time is raising questions about its potential impact on the government's ability to recruit and retain skilled staff. Premier Doug Ford's government has told the 60,000 members of the Ontario Public Service (OPS) they must be at their workplace at least four days a week starting in October and then in the office full time from early January. The OPS consists of people who work in the ministries and agencies directly controlled by the province. Roughly half of that workforce has had the option to work remotely up to twice a week since at least April 2022, as the COVID-19 pandemic waned and Ontario's return-to-office plan kicked in. Taking away that option is stirring up a debate about its merits for productivity, employee well-being and attracting talent. Eliminating remote work has a particular impact on the union AMAPCEO, which represents 14,000 professional and administrative staff, many of whom opted for the hybrid model of splitting their time between an office and home. AMAPCEO president Dave Bulmer says the Ford government's decision will affect both recruitment and retention in the OPS. "I represent professionals, highly educated people who can choose where to work in the market, the best and the brightest," Bulmer said in an interview with Radio-Canada. "Nobody's going to come to an OPS that doesn't have hybrid work," he said. "We have lots of people who are with the OPS who are probably going to move on now." 'Attracting, developing, retaining top talent' Bulmer argues the government's move runs counter to its own official human resources strategy, dubbed the OPS People Plan. The chief goal stated in the plan: "Attracting, developing, and retaining top talent that reflects Ontario's diversity." Maria Gintova, an assistant professor of political science and public policy at McMaster University, has researched the impact of flexible work arrangements on public sector employees. Those employees generally viewed mandatory work-from-office rules as "government going with their idea of how things should be done, without any kind of consultations, and not listening to the public service," she said in an interview with CBC News. WATCH | Ford government orders public servants back to the office full time: Ontario's public servants will be back in office full time as of 2026 2 days ago Ontario Premier Doug Ford is ordering the province's 60,000 public servants back to the office full time starting in January. CBC's Mike Crawley has the details. Gintova, who previously held policy jobs in several Ontario ministries, says allowing people to work remotely helps boost diversity in the workforce by opening up jobs to a geographically wider field of candidates. "Remote work is a key for improving work-life balance," Gintova added. While Ford says he believes government employees are more productive when they are in the office, Gintova says there's no evidence to suggest that's accurate. Mulroney spokesperson defends move A spokesperson for Treasury Board President Caroline Mulroney, the cabinet minister who oversees the OPS, says moving to a standard of five days per week in the workplace reflects what's happening in workplaces throughout Ontario. "Our standard is also aligned with other provinces, cities, and organizations across Canada," Mulroney's director of communications, Andrea Chiappetta, said in an email to CBC News. "We are confident in our ability to attract and retain top talent into the public service," Chiappetta said. Provincial data puts the turnover rate in the Ontario public service at six per cent. The OPS People Plan includes a target of reducing that to 4.2 per cent by 2026. The province also wants to boost another measure of the lure of an OPS job: the number of applicants per vacancy. It has averaged 28.4, and the government's target is 42.8 Scrapping the option to work remotely neither helps attract talented people to the public sector nor helps keep them there, says Marion Nader, CEO of Nexus Strategy Group and a former senior advisor with the Ontario NDP. "It shuts out a huge labour pool because people now want that flexibility," said Nader in an interview with CBC News. "People want the flexibility to be able to at least work from home a couple of days a week." Nader believes the Ford government has an ulterior motive with the plan: reducing the number of public service jobs through attrition. "The return to the office policy isn't about productivity. It's more about a downsizing strategy for the OPS," she said. John Fraser, the Ontario Liberal Party's labour critic, says the Ford government needs to take a more thoughtful and balanced approach to the issue. "Telecommuting has benefits for our economy, families' lives, and our environment," Fraser said in an email. "The reality is this is where the world is going." City of Brampton follows suit The Ford government's move has already prompted at least one other public sector employer in Ontario to follow suit. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said Friday he plans to follow the province's lead and require city staff to return to full-time in-office work on an identical timeline. Four of Canada's big banks — RBC, Scotiabank, BMO and TD — recently announced that staff at their Toronto headquarters must spend at least four days a week in the office, effective this fall. The province's announcement comes just two weeks after AMAPCEO ratified a new collective agreement, and while the other major union representing provincial public servants, OPSEU, is in the midst of negotiations. Hybrid work has "provided measurable benefits in productivity, retention, and well-being," said OPSEU in a statement. Ontario's mandate for OPS staff to be in the office four days per week takes effect on Oct. 20, with the full-time-in-office rule kicking in on Jan. 5, 2026. Employees who currently have what's called an "alternative work arrangement" — a formal, signed agreement to work from a different location — will not have to follow the new in-office mandate. A government official says those will remain valid until the expiry date in each agreement. The two unions are encouraging members who still want to work remotely but don't have such an arrangement in place to request them from OPS management.
