Whanganui club rugby: Taihape second on premier table after win over Border

But having played hard games throughout the round, Taihape were conditioned for the tough stuff and took over in the second half to rattle off three straight tries, with Whale converting two of them, for a 26-13 turnaround with less than 10 minutes remaining. Getting a big lift from their bench, which included regular starters, dotting down were incumbent Steelform Whanganui prop Gabriel Hakaraia, who came on behind his brother Te Uhi and skipper Hoani Woodhead in the front row, reserve outside back Ryan Karatau and reserve forward Isaiah Mātana. Similar to Tāmata Hauhā Rātana in the Pa, Border managed to score near fulltime to at least secure what could be an important bonus point – reserve Rusiate Lalanabaravi getting a try which was duly converted. Taihape's victory made it three wins from their past four visits to Waverley since 2022. Also having reached the halfway point of their grade is the Tasman Tanning Senior teams, and the Border Seniors have now done something their Premier side hasn't – won a game on the field, as the home side secured a 35-14 victory over Bennett's Taihape to jump into the Top 8. There are new competition leaders and a sole unbeaten team, as McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu did what they promised and pulled the high-flying Forest 360 Marist Knights into an honest country scrap – holding on for a 15-11 win. The Whanganui Challenge Shield remains locked up at the Macnab Domain, but not without McCrea Scanning Counties having to work to keep up, beating bottom-of-the-table Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau 22-10. The Spriggens Park derby narrowly went the way of Direct Connect Marist Celtic, who held off Seales Winslow Pirates 24-19 while, after their slow start to the campaign, Utiku Old Boys rocketed up to fifth spot on the table after their third straight win, beating home side Kelso Hunterville 31-20. Results, May 16-17 Tasman Tanning Premier Dave Hoskin Carriers Marist 28 (Daniel Kauika, Te Heru Reu Koro, Brett Joyes, Cyprien Bernard, Lachlan Fisher tries; Kauika pen) bt Tāmata Hauhā Rātana 21 (Onewa Tai, Shade Tuaine-Whanau, Rangi Kui tries; Kui 2 pen). "He must continue to protect his country": Family gets emotional after BSF jawan PK Shaw returns to India

Hooghly (West Bengal) [India], May 14 (ANI): A mix of emotions was witnessed at the residence of Border Security Force Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who has been repatriated by Pakistan after being captured on April 23. His father, wife, and other relatives expressed gratitude towards all those who extended a helping hand during Shaw's capture. Bhola Shaw, father of the BSF jawan, said that now that his son has returned, he must continue to protect his country. 'On the 24th day, the government (centre and state) brought my son back from Pakistan. I thank all of them. I want my son to continue protecting his country. I would appreciate PM Modi for Operation Sindoor,' he added. Rajni Shaw, wife of the now repatriated BSF jawan, informed that she had a conversation with her husband over video call after nearly 22 days and said, 'I talked to him over video call after 22 days. I couldn't recognise him, given his beard had grown.' She said the Commanding Officer (CO) had called her up in the morning to inform her about her husband's return from Pakistan. Rajni Shaw said that her husband seemed fit and fine. 'He was in Pakistan for over 20 days. I felt happy after the Commanding Officer (CO) called up in the morning that PK sahab had returned to India, and he was doing fine. There was no need to worry, the CO said. I even talked to my husband. He is physically fit. He is expected to call me again. She expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for their efforts to help with the return of her husband. 'I talked to the CM after three or four days. She assured me that my husband would return this week. She also supported me immensely and raised her voice on the issue. I thank my countrymen that my husband has returned safe because of them,' Rajni said. PM Modi initiated Operation Sindoor to avenge the killing of husbands in Pahalgam of all (women), after which he brought my husband back home,' she added. The Pakistan government has repatriated India's Border Security Force Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw. The BSF Constable had accidentally crossed the border during his duty on April 23 and had been in the custody of the Pakistan Rangers, a statement from the Public Relations Officer, Punjab Frontier, Border Security Force said. According to the BSF statement release, 'Today at 1030 hrs Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by BSF at Attari-Wagha border. Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan territory, while on operational duty in the Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025, around 1150 hrs and was detained by Pak Rangers. With the consistent efforts of BSF through regular flag meetings with Pakistan Rangers and through other communication channels, the repatriation of BSF Constable has become possible.' Earlier on May 5, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed her concern for the BSF Constable from Hooghly who was detained by the Pakistan Rangers. She said that Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee is in touch with the family members. (ANI)

Traders body sends 'Pakistan ban' letter to government on Amazon, Flipkart and other online platforms: 'It is a grave matter that risks undermining national unity and ...'

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has written a letter to the government, requesting a ban on the sale of Pakistani flags and merchandise on e-commerce platforms, reports ANI. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The letter, addressed to Union Commerce Minister and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, has the subject line: 'Immediate action needed: Sale of Pakistani flags and merchandise on E-commerce platforms amidst Operation Sindoor'. 'It has come to light that Pakistani flags, logo-bearing mugs, and T-shirts are being openly sold on major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart,' the letter states. 'At a time when our soldiers are displaying unmatched courage and sacrifice to safeguard our nation, the sale of items representing a hostile nation is not only insensitive but also entirely unacceptable,' it adds. Members of the Times of India-Tech team checked both e-commerce platforms Amazon and Flipkart. Our search results for Pakistani flag on Amazon included products like Pakistani flag, cups with Pakistani flag, mouse mat, Tshirts, flag scarfs, metal key chains and even cufflinks selling on Amazon. Product search results for the Pakistani flag on Flipkart showed only one result. The traders' body, in the letter, urges the government to ban sale of Pakistani flags, logos, and all related merchandise across all e-commerce platforms operating in the country. It also requests an investigation into how such products were listed and permitted for sale and implementation of strict compliance mechanisms to ensure such incidents do not recur Here's the letter sent to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal urging ban on sale of Pakistani flags on Amazon, Flipkart Subject: Immediate action needed: Sale of Pakistani flags and merchandise on E-commerce platforms amidst Dear Shri Piyush Goyal Ji, I write to express my deep concern over a matter that strikes at the very core of our national sentiment and sovereignty. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has come to light that Pakistani flags, logo-bearing mugs, and T-shirts are being openly sold on major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart. This disturbing situation unfolds even as our valiant armed forces are actively engaged in Operation Sindoor — a mission of critical national importance against Pakistan. At a time when our soldiers are displaying unmatched courage and sacrifice to safeguard our nation, the sale of items representing a hostile nation is not only insensitive but also entirely unacceptable. Such actions by e-commerce platforms reflect a blatant disregard for the dignity of our armed forces, the sovereignty of India, and the emotions of every patriotic Indian citizen. This is not merely an oversight. It is a grave matter that risks undermining national unity and poses a potential threat to our internal harmony and security. In light of the above, I urge your immediate attention and request the following actions: 1. An immediate ban on the sale of Pakistani flags, logos, and all related merchandise across all e-commerce platforms operating in India. 2. A thorough investigation into how such products were listed and permitted for sale. 3. Implementation of strict compliance mechanisms to ensure such incidents do not recur, including penal action or suspension of platforms failing to adhere to national sensitivities. 4. Issuance of clear directives to all e-commerce platforms to prohibit the sale of any products that may compromise national security or insult public sentiment. The attached evidence highlights the seriousness and insensitivity of this issue. This is a matter of national honor, not commercial freedom. I trust that you will act with the urgency and firmness this matter demands and take decisive steps to safeguard the pride of our armed forces and the dignity of our nation. With highest regards, Yours truly B. C. Bhartia National President

‘I thought they would only deport criminals': Donald Trump supporter feels betrayed after Cuban husband gets deported

Liyian Páez, a Cuban-American, is left heartbroken after her husband was deported to Cuba, reports the Mirror US. The woman, who is a supporter of Donald Trump, said she felt betrayed as she thought only criminals would be deported from the US, adding that her husband has a clean record. 28-year-old Alían Méndez Aguilar was deported in April, which left Páez to care for their kids alone, including one child with special needs. "I thought they would only deport criminals," she told Univision, cited in the Mirror US. She added, "We are good people.' According to CiberCuba, Aguilar came to the US in 2019 and received a deportation order in 2020. However, he wasn't deported because the Cuban government refused to receive him at that time. When 90 days passed without his repatriation being carried out, he was released under supervision. Since then, he has built a life for himself in the US. He worked, got married, and started a family—all without having any legal issues. This incident left the family shattered, with the young kid, their daughter, crying and looking for her father. Following the deportation, Páez and the kids visited Cuba for a brief period. Páez told the Mirror US that the little girl was overwhelmed with emotions after seeing her father. "She kept saying, 'daddy, daddy,' and was hugging him, kissing him, as if she didn't understand what was happening, why she hadn't seen her dad," the woman added. Aguilar is in Cuba, whereas his family is back in the US. He is exploring legal options to find a way to return to America. His wife, Páez, on the other hand, is trying to reach out to senators and congressional representatives to get her husband back with her.

‘What's happening is despicable' – New Israeli offensive could see total seizure of Gaza

"Population will be moved, for its own protection," Netanyahu said in a video posted on X A woman reacts as mourners attend the funeral of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes, in Khan Younis::REUTERS What is happening to the people of Gaza is 'despicable and unconscionable,' Tánaiste Simon Harris has said, as Israeli announced a new 'intensive' invasion of the enclave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that a new offensive in Gaza will be an intensive military operation aimed at defeating Hamas, but stopped short of detailing just how much of the enclave's territory would be seized. "Population will be moved, for its own protection," Netanyahu said in a video posted on X. He said Israeli soldiers won't go into Gaza, launch raids and then retreat. "The intention is the opposite of that," he said. The new offensive on Gaza, could see the IDF seize the entire enclave. In a statement on the matter, Mr Harris called for Israel to reverse course. "The reports of a planned extension of military operations by Israeli forces in Gaza are alarming. 'Such a move would result in further deaths, casualties and untold suffering for the Palestinian population who already face a dire humanitarian situation. 'I strongly urge the Israeli authorities to exercise restraint. 'What is happening to the people of Gaza is despicable and unconscionable. "This is a humanitarian catastrophe. 'We need to see an immediate cessation of hostilities, release of remaining hostages and the resumption of humanitarian aid at scale into Gaza,' Mr Harris said. (AP Photo/Abdel Kareem Hana) The new invasion includes a new plan for aid distribution though supplies will not be let in yet, according to Israeli officials. Two Israeli officials said the plan also includes the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to southern Gaza. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing military plans. The statement came as Israeli ministers today agreed to ramp up the war against Hamas in Gaza, with plans to capture more territory in the beleaguered Palestinian enclave and call up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers. The plan, which the official said would be gradual, could mark a significant escalation in the fighting in Gaza, which resumed in mid-March after Israel and Hamas failed to agree on an extension to an eight-week truce. Israel's military chief of staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, said the army was calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers and said Israel would 'operate in additional areas' in Gaza and continue to strike militant infrastructure. Mothers of soldiers call to end the war in Gaza:. REUTERS/ Israel already controls roughly half of Gaza's territory, including a buffer zone along the border with Israel as well as three corridors that run east to west along the strip. These have squeezed war-weary Palestinians into ever shrinking wedges of land in the devastated territory. For weeks, Israel has been trying to increase pressure on the militant Hamas group and prompt it to show more flexibility in negotiations. In early March, Israel halted the entry of aid into Gaza - a ban that is ongoing and which has plunged the territory of 2.3 million people into what is believed to be the worst humanitarian crisis of the war. Hunger has been widespread, and shortages have set off looting. On March 18, Israel resumed strikes in the territory, killing more than 2,600 people in the weeks since, many of them women and children, according to local health officials. The previous ceasefire was meant to lead the sides to negotiate an end to the war, but that end goal has been a repeated sticking point in talks between Israel and Hamas. A woman reacts as mourners attend the funeral of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes, in Khan Younis::REUTERS Today's News in 90 Seconds - May 5th Israel says it will not agree to end the war until Hamas is defeated. Hamas meanwhile has demanded an agreement that winds down the war. The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Israel says 59 captives remain in Gaza, although about 35 are believed to be dead. Israel's offensive has killed more than 52,000 people in Gaza, many of them women and children, according to Palestinian health officials, who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians in their count. The fighting has displaced more than 90pcof Gaza's population, often multiple times.
