Sonos' smart assistant is expanding from music to home control

Since its launch in 2022, the capabilities of Sonos Voice Control have expanded to include setting timers and checking the weather. But by the end of this year, the smart assistant will introduce compatibility with the Philips Hue smart home platform allowing it to also control lights through voice commands, according to Hueblog. In late 2019, Sonos acquired a Paris-based company called Snips that had created a 'private-by-design' AI voice platform. Nearly three years later, Sonos Voice Control was introduced offering users an alternative to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for controlling the company's smart speakers with voice commands. Sonos Voice Control can be used to adjust volume, group multiple Sonos speakers together, or play songs from streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify, with an emphasis on privacy since all commands are processed locally and never sent to the cloud. Its capabilities have slowly expanded over the past few years, but interoperability with Philips Hue would be the first time Sonos Voice Control is compatible with another smart home platform. Specifics on how exactly you can control Hue lights with the smart assistant aren't known, but Hueblog speculates that users will be able to turn individual lights on and off, adjust brightness, or activate scenes using voice commands. More details will potentially be revealed at a media event that Philips Hue has planned for September 3rd, 2025, during the IFA show in Berlin where it typically announces new products and services. The Verge has reached out to Sonos about this potential major expansion of Sonos Voice Control's capabilities. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. The Govee Floor Lamp 2 Is My Favorite Smart Lamp, and It's 21% Off Right Now

Govee has made a name for itself in the smart lighting business as an affordable alternative to other brands, like Philips Hue. So when I decided to upgrade my old traditional lighting to smart bulbs, panels and switches, the colorful Govee RGBIC Floor Lamp (replaced by the Floor Lamp 2) was an easy choice for my living room. Why? I wanted something vertical to fit nicely into the space and a look that's different than a typical round smart bulb in your average lamp. Right now the Govee Floor Lamp 2 is marked down to as low as $130 on Amazon, depending on the color you choose. That's a discount of 21% off the usual $165 list price. Like most smart lighting, the Govee floor lamp uses RGB LEDs to offer just about any color you want. My family chose green to complement the green in our living room, but it also changes depending on the time of day. What I enjoy about this lamp is its low profile: You can barely see it, just a small base and a thin line of metal. The focus is on the light rather than the structure. Another big selling point is its connection to other Govee products. If you own the Govee Backlight for TVs, which CNET's Russell Holly wrote about here, you can link up all your Govee lights to work in tandem as you watch a movie. Having all your lights working in sync with a movie like Dune or Mad Max: Fury Road is a lot of fun. Even without the backlight, a single app or Alexa and Google Assistant easily control all your lights. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. Does the Govee floor lamp make a good gift? As a big fan of Govee products, I think its lighting makes an excellent gift for others and yourself. If you know someone's decor style well, the floor lamp would be an excellent choice since it has such a slim profile that would fit every room I can imagine. Otherwise, an ultraportable, color-changing Govee table lamp that has both in-person tap controls and on-device app controls is also a big winner since the person lucky enough to receive the lamp can bathe themselves in the glow of pretty much any color combination and pattern they can imagine. There are also these Govee color-changing light bulbs that can spruce up virtually any compatible setting. My buying recommendation Without a discount, this tall and thin smart lamp is a bit of an investment at $165, but it's still considerably cheaper than a Philips Hue equivalent. All three colors are currently on sale on Amazon -- the blue and black models are both marked down to $130, and the silver version is $140. While we've seen a deeper discount before, this model is newer and includes Matter support, higher lumen output and additional upgrades over its predecessor. To me, that makes it a no-brainer. Prime Day officially wrapped up on Friday night, but Amazon has decided to give some of its best deals an extra half-life. Included among deals still available is this Philips Hue A19 LED smart light bulbs three-pack. If you're not a Philips Hue customer yet, you'll have to add the Hue Bridge in order to use all of the features, but if you already have a Hue system, the bulbs integrate in seconds into your existing system. Right now, this three-pack is available for $95, down from the usual $134 which is a massive 30% discount and the lowest price ever seen for this set on Amazon. See at Amazon Each bulb in this pack is a 60W-equivalent A19 LED, which offers white and color ambiance. You can choose to select from millions of colors and the full gamut of warm-to-cool white tones so you can set just the right mood for any situation. Whether you are fond of a bright, energizing light in the morning or a soft, calming light in the evening, the Philips Hue app lets you personalize the lighting to your preference. There are also pre-set scenes that mimic daylight or help with concentration for instance. After syncing with the Hue Bridge (sold separately), your lights become controllable anywhere on earth via the Hue mobile app. The system plays seamlessly with Alexa, Google Assistant and HomeKit so you can simply use voice commands to turn lights on and off, cycle colors, or adjust brightness. This hands-free capability is game-changing for crazy mornings or when your hands are full. It is easy to personalize your lighting with dynamic effects and schedules: Schedule your lights to change automatically throughout the day, gently wake you up in the morning or gradually calm down in the evening. The bulbs are also environmentally friendly and use a fraction of the energy of ordinary incandescent bulbs while producing bright colors. If you would like to add style and smart control to your home, this Philips Hue three-pack is an offer that you cannot miss out on. See at Amazon

Philips Hue Table Lamp Gets One More Prime Day Cut Before It's Over, the Lowest Price We'll See All Year

Prime Day ends Friday, which means that time's running out on a lot of the incredible deals you can get right now on just about anything you could want. Seriously, the list of deals is endless, and looking at them is tiring. You don't have to look at all though, you can just keep reading Gizmodo to find all of the best ones. Right now, that means that you're looking at the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Tablet Lamp, which is currently 32% off the standard price of $220, which means it's just $149. That deal's only available for Amazon Prime members though, and it's worth noting that we don't know when it will end, so if you do want to get your hands on this, you should probably do it quickly. See at Amazon Getting a table lamp can feel a bit odd for a lot of us, after all, the big light is just there. But the big light burns everyone's eyes, and we all know it's a trap. So, while a floor lamp is nice, if you've got the right space for it, then a table lamp can tie off a room's vibe perfectly all on its own. That's even more the case when you've got one which can do as much as the Philips Hue Gradient Signe. This amazing table lamp is compatible with Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant, so if you've got a smart home going on, this thing should slot right in. Of course, can always just go ahead and use the app if you're not rocking any of those. How you control it is hardly the point though, so let's go over what it does. You can enjoy a range of colors that number in the millions. That means you can absolutely just use it as a standard white light in various shades of warm and light, not to mention as bright or dim as you want, you can also color things up for a different vibe. This means you can match your decor, or a gaming set-up, or just have it match whatever your mood is in any given room. It's really easy to organize different setups, and it allows you to switch things up in an instant, even controlling it with your voice. It's just a really cool lamp, and it's perfect for any space. It's also not going to stay at the $149 price for very long, so if you want it while it's 32% off, make sure you don't wait around for too long. See at Amazon

Why I love it: 'Summer in Toronto can get hot, which is why I always have a spare Liquid I.V. pouch in my bag to stay hydrated on the go. Normally I'm a fan of the brand's Firecracker popsicle-flavoured electrolyte mix, but noticed this new fruit punch flavour on sale and thought I'd give it a try. The jury's still out on whether it becomes a new favourite, but the tropical mix of pineapple, cherry and tangerine is a fun change for summer.' — Kate Mendonca, Shopping Editor Price: $27 (Was: $38) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'Yes, people still use printers. I finally got tired of asking the group chat, 'Can I use your printer?' and took matters into my own hands. First, I tried a fancy new inkless, wireless, portable printer and decided it wasn't for me (didn't like the receipt-style paper). I took advantage of the discount and went for a classic, trusty Canon.' — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor Price: $47 (was $60) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'I felt like giving the living room a little upgrade with some mood lighting to make the space feel cozier. After some research, Philips Hue stood out as the best option for vibrant colour, durability and smart features. Setup was a bit tricky, but I love that it's compatible with Google Home devices. People get super creative with striplights, using them on bed frames, as TV backlights or even under kitchen cabinets. I have mine set up on the back of the couch to a warm white on low brightness, and it totally changes the vibe at night. No need for overhead lights or bulky lamps. Game changer.' — Jacqueline Osias, Deals Coordinator Price: $60 (Was: $80) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'This curly cream tames frizz and defines curls. SEEN is developed by a dermatologist who emphasizes the importance of skin-friendly hair products. The cream is fragrance-free and just does a great job of creating soft, bouncy curls.' — Randi Mann, Shopping Editor Price: $29 (Was: $37) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'While not currently on sale, I used my Prime Day purchase as an opportunity to restock my supply of this Orgain protein powder. I've tried a wide range of brands and this chocolate protein powder consistently remains my favourite. When mixed with almond milk, it's a plant-based source of 21g of protein that's smooth and never gritty. It also doesn't have the stevia-like aftertaste of many other protein powders I've tried while delivering a rich, chocolatey taste.' — Kate Mendonca, Shopping Editor Price: $51 Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'Not much to say here, other than a deal is a deal! This was one of the hottest, most purchased ones , so I jumped on the bandwagon. We all need toilet paper, so we may as well get it while it's on sale. Home essentials year over year outperforms other categories, for good reason. ' — Leigh Taveroff, Shopping Editor Price: $25 (was $39) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'I got my first ergonomic mouse and I'm really enjoying it! It's easy on the wrist, tracks really well, and the clicks are smooth and quiet. Like other pricier brands, it was simple to set up via Bluetooth — and no batteries needed. Overall, it's functional, great value and I got it in pink.' — Jacqueline Osias, Deals Coordinator Price: $24 (Was: $30) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'Batteries aren't an exciting purchase, but they are necessary for the myriad household devices that all seem to die in sync. This pack of AA batteries should last me at least a year and keep my TV remotes, computer mice and film cameras running smoothly. In case you need to stock up on AAA batteries , they're also on sale right now.' — Kate Mendonca, Shopping Editor Price: $16 (Was: $22) Where to buy: Amazon Why I love it: 'After interviewing an expert on women's health, I'm always looking to increase my protein intake, and bars are an easy, convenient way to do it. These are new to me, and I love the macros. 20g of protein to 2g of sugar? Sign me up! The bars are already accessibly priced (even without the sale), taste great and help keep me satiated between meals.
