Pirates Of The Caribbean Producer Claims He's Spoken To Johnny Depp About Appearing In Next Film
Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has claimed he's held conversations with Johnny Depp about reprising his role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the next film in the series. Rumours of a reboot of the live-action Disney franchise have been swirling for years, with Bruckheimer confirming last year that a new movie was on the horizon. And while the producer claimed just a couple of months ago that he was eyeing actors from the original series to return for the revival, he was more forthcoming about exactly who he had in mind during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. Bruckheimer told the US outlet that he'd been in contact with Depp about coming back as Jack Sparrow, and claimed the actor would be up for it as long as the script is right. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' he said, adding: 'It's a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it. I love him. He's a good friend. 'He's an amazing artist, and he's a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.' However, it's perhaps worth pointing out that, while testifying in his infamous 2022 court case, the Edward Scissorhands actor insisted he would not even accept an offer of '$300 million and a million alpacas' to reprise his role in a future Pirates Of The Caribbean film, after claiming Disney had dropped him from the franchise years earlier. Depp has been a controversial figure in Hollywood ever since his ex-wife Amber Heard alleged during their divorce proceedings in 2016 that he had been abusive towards her in their marriage, which he denied at the time. They later reached a settlement and issued a joint statement which read: 'Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.' In 2019, Depp sued Heard for defamation over an opinion piece in which she wrote that she had been a victim of domestic abuse, without mentioning anyone, including her famous ex-husband, by name. After a prolific court case, a jury found in 2022 that Heard had defamed Depp with the statements in her opinion piece years earlier. Two years prior, Depp also sued the publishers of The Sun newspaper over a piece describing him as a 'wife-beater'. The UK's High Court Of Justice eventually ruled that the 'great majority' of Heard's allegations of abuse could be proven to the civil standard, and as a result The Sun's description of him was 'substantially true'.

According to longtime Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp could once again reprise career-making role , if the right script comes along. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly . 'It's all about what's on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven't quite gotten there yet, but we're close.' Daily Mail has reached out to Depp's representatives for comment, but they have not yet responded. Depp, 62, led five Pirates films between 2003 and 2017, all of which grossed more than $650 million globally, with Dead Man's Chest (2006) and On Stranger Tides (2011) each crossing the $1 billion mark. Together, the franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office — much of that with Depp front and center. His future with the Disney-backed series had been uncertain following his highly publicized legal troubles , including his 2022 libel trial against Amber Heard. Previously, the entertainment conglomerate chose to distance itself from the actor, but never formally cut ties with the father-of-two. At the time, millions of his fans signed online petitions demanding the star be reinstated in his role as Sparrow. But with Depp now mounting a major comeback in Lionsgate's upcoming Day Drinker, rumors over his return to the high seas has only grown. His last studio film was 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The path to another Pirates installment has been winding and long. Back in 2020, Variety reported that Disney was developing two separate projects: a reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film continuing the original storyline, written by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott. Elliott famously co-wrote the first four Pirates adventures. Robbie later told Vanity Fair in 2022 that Disney was 'not interested' in her 'more of a female-led' version, but Bruckheimer pushed back on that narrative. At the time, he told EW there's still room for both. 'I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too,' he said. That same year, he continued to insist that the project was very much 'alive' to The Hollywood Reporter. Although the female-led spinoff is unclear, it does not currently have a release date and no details about casting or production plans have been released.

Do We Have to Bring Johnny Depp Back to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean', Actually?
Back in 2003, when Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl first hit theaters, it was a pleasant surprise. A movie based on a Disney ride—in a time when pirate movies weren't exactly riding high—it was highly entertaining, made a zillion dollars, and earned Johnny Depp his first Oscar nomination. Four sequels of varying quality followed, but despite many rumblings since Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, Pirates has yet to relaunch. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is now saying there might be life left in the franchise with the now-controversial Depp back aboard—but is that something we should really be encouraging? Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer said Depp is open to a Captain Jack Sparrow return. That's significant since Disney jettisoned the star in 2018 amid his legal drama with former wife Amber Heard; as EW notes, Depp said in court in 2022 that he would not be reprising the role because 'there was a deep and distinct sense of feeling betrayed by the people that I've worked hard for.' However, now there's seemingly been a shift. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' Bruckheimer told EW. 'It's all about what's on the page, as we all know.' Bruckheimer has previously described a potential sixth Pirates movie as a reboot. In 2022, amid discussions of Margot Robbie's on-again, off-again take on the franchise—which he still had hopes for at that time—he sounded less optimistic about Depp making any sort of Pirates return someday. However, he did say, 'The future has yet to be decided.' That future is apparently here now, and Bruckheimer, who is clearly aware that any time he talks about Pirates he makes headlines, is floating that possibility anew. But even if someone writes the best Pirates reboot script ever, topping even the seaworthy hijinks of The Curse of the Black Pearl, do we really need Depp and his character to be shoehorned into it? Captain Jack Sparrow had already overstayed his welcome even before Depp's personal troubles became headline fodder. Perhaps if there's no chance of getting a Pirates movie without him, we should consider letting the idea sink to the bottom of the ocean forever. Want more io9 news? New book exposes truth behind Depp-Heard Hollywood romance

It's been almost a decade since Amber Heard first filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, in what became one of the most talked-about breakups in Hollywood history. In the bitter disputes that followed, each accused the other of violence and addiction issues, and startling stories emerged about Depp severing his own finger to scrawl messages on a mirror with the bloodied tip. Heard, meanwhile, was accused of relieving herself in the marital bed (she blamed their dogs, teacup Yorkshire terriers Pistol and Boo). It was genuinely shocking stuff. And journalists Kelly Loudenberg and Makiko Wholey were in the box seat to witness every sad and sordid detail, which they now unpick in their HarperCollins book Hollywood Vampires: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard And The Celebrity Exploitation Machine. 'We tried to write that into the story,' she said. 'We feel that there was a love they had for each other. There was a special connection to each other, which makes it all the more tragic and sad.' Her co-author, Wholey, also weighed in, saying, 'It's probably why it exploded so much. It did seem like they really were in love with each other for a time. 'But we brought it back to this idea of Hollywood, the machinations of Hollywood, making everything distorted for people. It's hard to find love in a hopeless place.' Certainly, theirs was a classic Hollywood love story of a famous older actor falling for his much younger co-star, when Depp, now 62, and Heard, 39, met on the set of 2011 movie The Rum Diary. They tied the knot in 2015, on Depp's private island in the Bahamas, where they enjoyed an intimate celebration of dinner, dancing and drugs with their nearest and dearest. Depp's son Jack was in the wedding party, but his actress daughter Lily-Rose refused to attend. The pair fell in love after meeting on-set in 2011. Picture:for Art of Elysium Fifteen months later, Heard filed for divorce, unleashing a deluge of mudslinging that has made Brangelina's legal stoush look like a fairytale uncoupling. Nobody came out a winner. Depp lost the first round when a UK judge found a 'great majority' of Heard's accounts could be proven on the balance of probabilities. The ruling led to the Pirates Of The Caribbean star being sacked from the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore. The US actor then took the battle back to home soil, suing Heard for $77 million over an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post in which she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse. Heard sued back, with a $154 million counterclaim against Depp. It's been a decade since Heard filed for divorce from Depp after 15 months of marriage. He was also found to have defamed Heard via his lawyer, and ordered to pay her $3 million. The proceedings, which saw actress Ellen Barkin take the stand and Depp's private texts with Paul Bettany shared in open court, were broadcast live. So feverish was the interest that large crowds of spectators would gather outside the courthouse each day. Some even arrived hours early to wait in line for a coveted spot inside the courtroom. While giving her evidence, Heard described the toll of the attention: 'I am harassed, humiliated, threatened every single day. 'Even just walking into this courtroom, sitting here in front of the world, having the worst parts of my life, things that I've lived through, used to humiliate me. People want to kill me, and they tell me so every day.' Heard has now largely retreated from the public eye, moving to Spain to raise the three children she has since welcomed alone.
