Revisiting Patrick Cantlay's BMW Championship putting masterpiece upon return to Caves Valley
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – As Patrick Cantlay warmed up on the left side of the range at Caves Valley Golf Club ahead of the 2021 BMW Championship, his long-time instructor Jamie Mulligan watched him hit one wedge and gushed, 'That's it.' Cantlay hit another ball and Mulligan offered the same response. Cantlay shot him a quizzical expression. 'I told him, 'That's our look. Stay in that bubble. Your pace is great, your club is in the perfect position and I love the way the ball has been coming off your putter,' ' recalled Mulligan, who runs Virginia Golf Club in Long Beach, California, where Cantlay learned the game and is a member to this day. If anyone should know if Cantlay was on the verge of arguably his greatest run of golf to date, it was Mulligan, who knew from the first time he set eyes on Cantlay as a kid that he was special. What he did at the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club was nothing short of brilliant, shooting a total of 27-under for 72 holes — and 31 birdies for the week — and it still wasn't enough to win in regulation. Cantlay would have to duel six holes in a sudden-death playoff with Bryson DeChambeau before he could drive off with his third trophy of the season. Finally, Cantlay sank the decisive blow as his 18-foot birdie putt on No. 18 toppled in. There will be other thrilling duels to come at the BMW Championship, which is back at Caves Valley this year, but it's hard to imagine a player will putt out of his mind the way Cantlay did for one remarkable tournament. Cantlay made more than 537 feet of putts for the week and gained 14.58 strokes on the field with his putting, the most strokes gained putting in a 72-hole event since tracking began on the Tour in 2004. And yet the numbers almost don't do it justice. Asked if he could recall a similar performance from Cantlay with the short stick, Mulligan said, 'I don't think anybody's ever putted that well.' Four years later, Cantlay has returned to Caves Valley and he recently added a new putting coach to his team. Phil Kenyon, who has turned Scottie Scheffler's lone weakness into a strength, has added Cantlay to his stable. 'I'll do anything to make a few more putts,' Cantlay said during his pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday ahead of the BMW Championship. 'Having somebody who's an expert eye at that can only be helpful.' Cantlay always has been an above-average putter but he's steadily declined in Strokes Gained: Putting since that win here in 2021. In 2022, he ranked 28th in SGP, 47th the following year, 53rd in 2024 and entered the week at No. 78 this season, his worst performance since 2017-18. Cantlay said it's not unusual for he and his team to drill down at his game and ask, 'Is there something else we can do to get a little better?' Cantlay got off to a good start with Kenyon, finishing T-9 last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, his fourth top-10 finish of the season and improved to No. 19 in the FedEx Cup season-long standings. He's poised to move on to East Lake for the Tour Championship next week but he knows it would behoove him to turn one solid week into a hot three-week run in order to make a good impression with U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. Cantlay played a nine-hole practice round with Bradley on Tuesday but said that they play together regularly back home in Florida and that it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. 'It would be nice to go out the next two weeks and have some nice finishes and play well. After last week, I feel like I have some momentum going in the right direction, and I feel really good about the things I'm working on in my game,' he said. It wouldn't hurt if he were to shift into 'Patty Ice' mode again. Cantlay has been stuck on eight career wins on the PGA Tour since the 2022 BMW Championship. But it was here at Caves Valley that his fan support reached new heights when someone exclaimed, 'Patty Ice is rad.' Within two holes, Mulligan said, the gallery adopted the nickname, a twist on Matty Ice, the moniker of NFL quarterback Matt Ryan. 'I was surprised when I first heard it, and I kind of heard it on the weekend for the first time really that tournament. I think it had to do with me making all those putts. Some of them I even surprised myself with how many putts I was making,' Cantlay recalled. If Cantlay can channel something resembling that 2021 BMW putting performance this week again, he'll be a shoe-in for Bradley's Ryder Cup team.

Malaysian property tycoon pleads guilty in case linked to Singapore ex-minister

(EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE: Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng pleaded guilty to abetting the obstruction of justice at the state court today, in a case linked to former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran, according to local media reports. The Malaysian businessman, who played a key role in bringing the F1 race to Singapore, admitted to the charge related to a December 2022 trip to Qatar, for which Iswaran had accepted Ong's invitation, The Straits Times (ST) reported. A second charge of abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts will be taken into consideration for sentencing. Ong was first charged on Oct 4, 2024. His guilty plea followed multiple pre-trial conferences and court adjournments. The prosecution said Iswaran did not pay for his flight to Doha or his return flight to Singapore, nor did he pay for his hotel accommodation. Iswaran had travelled to Doha on Ong's private jet, while his hotel stay and return business-class flight were paid for by Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP) on Ong's instructions. In October 2024, Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the High Court after pleading guilty to four charges of obtaining valuable items as a public servant and one count of obstruction of justice. The obstruction of justice charge was linked to the S$5,700 Iswaran repaid to SGP for the cost of his business-class flight from Doha to Singapore in 2022. The prosecution said Ong also knew that Iswaran's act of making the repayment was likely to obstruct the course of justice, ST reported. Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng set sentencing for Aug 15. Ong's bail of S$800,000 meanwhile was extended. In mitigation, Ong's defence team said that he suffered from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer, which rendered him immunocompromised and would endanger his life if he were to contract an infection in prison. The prosecution accepted that the exercise of judicial mercy was warranted in Ong's case and did not object to the maximum fine for him instead of imprisonment, according to ST. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Scottish Greens confirm recount after 'software error' in process
Mi-Voice, their new voting system supplier, informed the Scottish Greens of a "software error" the day after the candidate lists were announced and has since apologised. Since then, the party has said a "full revised count" has taken place and they have confirmed that the 15 lead candidates remain selected. It comes after The Herald reported that the ex-internal elections officer Kate Joester quit over 'an anomaly' in the party's list selection results. A Scottish Greens spokesperson said: "The Scottish Greens are a proudly democratic party that gives every member a voice in our decision-making. "We sourced a third-party provider to host and count the ballot papers for this year's selection process for the Holyrood election. Following concerns raised by members who had reviewed the voting data, party officials sought advice from the third-party provider on Monday afternoon. The party was assured that the counting had been completed and confirmed to meet the standards requested under our internal party rules. "During further investigation by the third-party provider, they later discovered a software error in an external programme used to count votes. The party was first made aware of this on Tuesday morning. "Party officials were not aware of this error at the time of previous statements, and had been reassured by the third-party provider on Monday afternoon that all counting had been completed and verified. "Following a full revised count with oversight and verification from current party officials and those involved in previous Holyrood selections, we can confirm our full list of candidates for the Holyrood 2026 campaign. "All of the previously announced 15 lead candidates remain duly selected and will continue to lead the party's campaign to elect a record number of MSPs. "We would like to thank the volunteers and staff who worked to identify and resolve this situation under extreme pressure and to Mi-Voice for their cooperation in resolving the error. We understand that this has been a stressful process for candidates and members, and we thank them for their vigilance, patience and trust. "We are looking forward to working with our strong Green candidates in this election campaign, in which we'll present our positive vision of a better future where people and planet are put above corporate greed" Mi-Voice has said it was only later on Monday, the day the lists were announced, that they identified "anomalies" in the count which they said impacted how votes were transferred This is the first time the Scottish Greens have used Mi-Voice to carry out their selection processes. The Director of Mi-Voice, Simon Thomson said: "Mi-Voice were contracted by the Scottish Green Party (SGP) to provide the voting platform for their candidate selection process. We undertook that work and provided SGP with results, which they then published around midday on Monday 21st July 2025. "At around 2pm, we were contacted by SGP office-bearers seeking clarification about the production process of the results. We responded to say that the process had been undertaken according to the agreed procedure. "Later on the same afternoon, following further discussions, it came to our attention that the count sheets provided for the Holyrood selection results appeared to contain anomalies. "Following a thorough review, the anomalies were traced to a technical fault with the vote counting software provided by a trusted third-party supplier, which was used in place of the Mi-Voice counting system due to the specific STV rules required. The technical fault impacted the transfer of following preferences in cases where a candidate had been withdrawn from the count to create the ordered list. "Although our internal procedures for producing and verifying results were followed, this technical problem was undetected prior to the distribution of the original lists. We notified SGP office-bearers of this issue at around 10am on the morning of Tuesday 22nd July. "The third-party software in question is a widely recognised and industry-standard vote counting tool. We have since reported the issue to the software vendor and have implemented a solution that enables accurate list production moving forward. Using this revised process, we have produced updated candidate lists, which have undergone additional manual validation to ensure they represent the final and accurate outcome. "These corrected lists have now been shared with the Party." "We acknowledge the concern this has raised for Party members and candidates. We understand the frustration and confusion, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and concern it has caused. "To ensure this does not happen again, we are reviewing our internal quality control measures and introducing enhanced checks, particularly for scenarios involving candidate withdrawals to facilitate the production of ordered lists. "We remain committed to transparency, responsiveness and continuous improvement." READ MORE: Late bid for Scottish Greens leadership contest announced Greens election official resigned over 'anomaly' in results Maggie Chapman knocked from top of Scottish Greens list The Scottish Greens regional candidate lists come as the party is currently in the process of electing new co-leaders. Patrick Harvie has announced he will not run for leadership again, however, his co-leader Lorna Slater has made her bid to be re-elected for the top position.
