Alstom S.A: Alstom to supply 96 additional RER NG trainsets for the Île-de-France Mobilités RER D line

This order for approximately 1.7 billion euro, formalised by SNCF Voyageurs, follows the vote on the financing agreement by Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors on 10 April 2025 Alstom is delighted with this order, which demonstrates the renewed confidence of Île-de-France Mobilités and SNCF Voyageurs in this new-generation rolling stock RER NG is in service on the RER E line since November 2023 and on the RER D line since December 2024. 23 June 2025 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, will supply SNCF Voyageurs with 96 additional RER NG trainsets for the RER D line in order to complete and renew the fleet on this line. This order, formalised by SNCF Voyageurs, follows the vote on the financing agreement by Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors on 10 April 2025. Financed at 100% by Île-de-France Mobilités, this order worth around €1.7 billion1 is part of the framework agreement signed in 2017 between SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom. To date, 166 RER NG trainsets have already been ordered. This new order brings the total number of RER NG orders to 262 (130 trainsets, each 112 metres long, for RER E and 132 trainsets, each 130 metres long, for RER D). 'Alstom is delighted with this announcement, which confirms the confidence of Île-de-France Mobilités and SNCF Voyageurs in this new and innovative rolling stock, designed and assembled at our Valenciennes and Crespin sites, in the North of France,' said Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France. About RER NG The New Generation RER (called 'RER NG') is a double-decker rolling stock designed for the RER D and RER E lines, operated by Transilien SNCF Voyageurs on behalf of Île-de-France Mobilités, in order to improve passenger comfort and regularity on these lines. A train with more capacity and greater accessibility This train has been designed, both in terms of architecture and interior design, to optimise capacity and passenger flow. Thanks to its completely open 'boa' architecture, the combination of single- and double-deck cars and wide doors, it allows passengers to enter and leave with ease and offers three distinct travel areas. In each of the single-deck end cars, level platforms allow wheelchair passengers direct and rapid access to the areas dedicated to them, ensuring a comfortable journey. A more comfortable train RER NG offers a high level of comfort, with air conditioning, LED lighting adapted to the different times of the journey (day/night/station stops), USB sockets and numerous screens giving passengers rapid access to various transport information. Particular attention has also been paid to the seating. A more reliable and efficient train Based on Alstom's urban and suburban equipment solutions, the RER NG has been designed to guarantee the highest levels of availability, reliability, and safety. In particular, the RER NG's modern traction components allow for higher acceleration and deceleration performance than previous generations of rolling stock, an undeniable advantage for operations on much-frequented commuter lines. RER NG has been running on the RER E line since November 2023 and on the RER D line since December 2024. France unveils ‘incredible' new high-speed TGV trains with double-decker dining car

France's national railway operator has unveiled its next-generation high-speed trains, equipped with stylish interiors that are already causing a stir online. Branded INOUI (a play on the French word 'inouï,' meaning unprecedented or incredible), these will be the fifth generation of the country's TGV intercity service that has been at the forefront of high-speed rail travel since their launch nearly 45 years ago. After undergoing more than a million kilometers (over 620,000 miles) of test journeys, the new trains — manufactured entirely in France — were unveiled earlier this month by SNCF Voyageurs, the French national passenger rail operator, and manufacturer Alstom. '45 years after the first TGV, we're going to revolutionize high-speed travel once again,' Christophe Fanichet, CEO of SNCF Voyageurs, said in a press statement. The trains, which will travel at speeds of up to 320 kilometers an hour (nearly 200 mph) caused a stir online, with social media users praising the new designs. as 'incredible.' 'There's just something about these 70s space age vibes that make it feel modern and retro at the same time,' Jan Buis, who posts about technology and design, wrote on X. The first- and second-class carriages feature light interiors, complemented by statement yellow lamps. Table lamps have long been a staple on TGVs and the new generation are meant to look 'as round as the seats' while adding a touch of 'bright colour' and humor, according to SNCF's statement. The overall look of the project is the result of a collaboration between French engineering consultancy AREP and Japanese design agency NENDO. Comfort is the central theme, AREP said in a press release. 'The idea was to take a fresh look, to introduce a lasting break in the railway world and to re-enchant a technical and industrial environment,' it said, adding that the interiors are intended to provide a 'more personal bubble of comfort in a shared space.' France's famed cuisine and quality local ingredients will be showcased on the train's 'centrepiece' — a dining car spanning two floors. Passengers will be able to buy self-service items in the downstairs area, while the upstairs will be home to a 'convivial bistro' featuring seasonal French dishes and wines. For the first time in TGV's history, the entire train crew was involved in the design process, according to the press statement. Conductors, drivers and maintenance workers advised on designing layouts better suited to their daily tasks. The drivers used virtual reality technology to experience and choose between three different cab environments. Thoughtful design extends beyond the needs of those working on the train. Microwaves, extra changing tables and relaxation areas have been added to help families travelling with children. A new car has also been designed for wheelchair users, making it possible for them to board the train independently and order food to their seats. Journeys will start on the Paris-Lyon-Marseille line in 2026, taking travelers from the capital to the south coast in three hours.

SNCF Voyageurs to boost rail safety with Wabtec's KinetiX inspection systems

Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer francais (SNCF) Voyageurs, the French national railway company, has placed an order with Wabtec for the provision of KinetiX Inspection Technologies. This move aims to bolster the safety and reliability of its rail operations. The agreement marks an expansion of the current use of KinetiX Systems across 13 SNCF Technicentres in France. The order includes the addition of TreadView, WheelView, and BrakeView inspection systems to the existing axle maintenance and acoustic bearing monitoring technologies. These systems offer real-time, automated, contactless monitoring of the SNCF Voyageurs fleet. Wabtec will support SNCF Voyageurs with a dedicated team to assist from the installation stage through to the ongoing maintenance of the technology suite. Wabtec's KinetiX product manager and senior director Roopa Shenoy said: 'SNCF Voyageurs is a forward-thinking industry leader that is transforming its transit system by empowering its operations team with the latest inspection technologies. 'As one of the busiest rail networks in Europe, SNCF relies on us to support its efficient, reliable, and safe service.' Wabtec's KinetiX Inspection Technologies comprise a 'comprehensive' suite of solutions that are used for the inspection and monitoring of rail assets, according to the company. The wayside systems are designed to assess the condition of 'key' railcar components such as wheels, brakes, and bearings, providing an overall health report of the train. According to Wabtec, the integration of machine vision, laser scanning, and AI-driven analytics with acoustic and thermal technology, as well as load monitoring, sets a new standard for automating inspection processes and improving asset availability. The inspection analysis provided by KinetiX can be conducted while trains are in operation, even at speeds of up to 120km/h. Last month, Wabtec received a $248m order from the Winning Consortium Simandou, a joint venture of Baowu and Winning, to supply Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives and services for the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea. "SNCF Voyageurs to boost rail safety with Wabtec's KinetiX inspection systems" was originally created and published by Railway Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
