BROAD ARROW ADDS THE FOURTH SHELBY COBRA EVER BUILT, CSX 2003, TO MONTEREY JET CENTER AUCTION
Grosse Pointe, Michigan, June 20, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY) company, is honored to announce the presentation of one of the earliest Cobras ever built, the 1962 Shelby Cobra, CSX 2003, at its flagship Monterey Jet Center Auction on August 13-14, 2025. The highly significant and remarkably preserved Cobra is joined by additional modern American automotive legends, including a seldom-seen 2011 Hennessey Venom GT, and six cars offered from The American Performance Collection, led by a pair of highly optioned, extremely low-mileage limited edition 2017 Dodge Vipers. The 1962 Shelby Cobra on offer at the Monterey Jet Center Auction, CSX 2003, is the earliest serialized Cobra that may be available for decades to come. As one of the only original prototypes extant, CSX 2003 was completed at Ed Hugus' European Cars dealership in Pittsburgh as the fourth Shelby Cobra ever built. Hugus, like Shelby, was an accomplished sports car racer—one of the few Americans to compete at Le Mans ten times—and it was at his suggestion that Shelby pursued AC Cars in England, whose aging Ace roadster needed a new engine supplier, for his fledgling sports car idea. Shelby seized the opportunity to install Ford's new small-block V8, but he lacked the funding and facilities to begin production. Hugus stepped forward as Shelby's first ally—agreeing to promote, finance, and even help build the first Cobras—a partnership that would literally launch the legend of the Shelby Cobra. In early 1962, Hugus' best mechanics began installing the high-performance Ford 260 cu-in V8 HP experimental engines and Borg Warner four-speed transmissions into the AC aluminum British bodies, completing the very first Shelby Cobras for sale, including CSX 2001, the first production Cobra, and CSX 2003 through CSX 2007. This early effort was crucial to the Cobra's success: it bought Shelby enough time to secure Ford's official backing and set the stage for Shelby American's later triumphs on road and track. CSX 2003 is one of the only prototype examples, in its original, untouched form, known to exist today. Alongside CSX 2004, Ford's Special Vehicles Team in Dearborn evaluated the Cobra as a prerequisite to signing any formal agreement with Shelby. Company engineers—including Henry Ford II himself—inspected and drove CSX 2003 during this period, examining its design and capabilities first-hand. It was after this important testing period that the car was shipped to its first private owner, George Reed of Reed's Racing Rats Motors in Homewood, Illinois. In Reed's ownership, CSX 2003 was shown at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963. Sometime after this appearance, the car entered a short chain of private owners from 1969 until 1989, when it met Mr. Richard 'Doc' McAdam of Virginia, who would become its loving caretaker for the next 36 years. Mr. McAdam acquired the car somewhat serendipitously. He had purchased a 289 Cobra one year prior. That car's previous owner later approached McAdam seeking to repurchase his former Cobra. McAdam agreed, but only under specific conditions: 'only if you find me another Cobra, and if I approve, we can swap.' The 289 owner subsequently sourced CSX 2003 and presented it as a potential trade. Upon test driving the early Cobra, Mr. McAdam recognized its exceptional state of preservation and agreed to the trade. A few years after acquiring CSX 2003, Mr. McAdam received an invitation through his daughter—a Ford employee at the time—to attend a special event celebrating Carroll Shelby, hosted by Ford Motor Company in Washington, D.C. At this gathering, he had the honor of meeting Shelby personally, who examined the Cobra, praised its exceptional condition, and signed the inner door of the glove compartment. For the past 36 years, Mr. McAdam has cherished CSX 2003, even using the Cobra as his daily transportation to the hospital where he worked as a neurosurgeon. This daily use continued for many years until the Cobra's increasing value and rarity ultimately convinced him to retire it to climate-controlled storage. Even in retirement, however, the consignor and his sons would periodically exercise CSX 2003, ensuring it remained in proper working order while safeguarding its remarkable originality. CSX 2003 is presented at Broad Arrow's Monterey Jet Center Auction in its original configuration of Olde English White over a red interior, and complete with its original Experimental HP 260 cu-in engine, transmission, and rear end (Estimate: $1,500,000 - $2,000,000). This beautifully maintained and well-documented Cobra would be a worthy centerpiece for any collector who appreciates the profound story and unrepeatable provenance of the early Hugus-built Prototype Shelby Cobras. Watch the trailer for a film on this Cobra's fascinating history here. 'I have had the honor and the pleasure of helping clients buy and sell numerous Shelby Cobras over my more than forty years in the collector car business, and CSX 2003 is undoubtedly one of the most original and most significant examples I've ever encountered,' says Donnie Gould, Senior Car Specialist, Broad Arrow Auctions. 'This car's very existence is tied to the Shelby Cobra's origin story, and its current long-term ownership history embodies what attracts so many of us to this great hobby to begin with. We're privileged to present CSX 2003 at our Monterey Jet Center Auction for what is surely an unrepeatable opportunity.' Broad Arrow is delighted to present additional American automotive legends of the modern era in Monterey, led by a 2011 Hennessey Venom GT (Estimate: $350,000 - $450,000, Offered without reserve). The car on offer is chassis 03 of a mere 13 Venom GTs produced between 2011 and 2014. Finished in a striking Venom Red exterior over a black leather and Alcantara cabin, it shows fewer than 2,300 kilometers from new. The Venom GT inherited the timeless Anglo-American tradition of marrying raw American power with sophisticated British chassis architecture. It blends a bespoke carbon-fiber monocoque—sourced from Lotus—with a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 delivering 725 horsepower through a six-speed Ricardo manual transaxle. Carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, fully independent suspension and adjustable aero elements ensure stability at extreme speeds, while an Alcantara-trimmed interior, comprehensive instrumentation, and factory-fitted air-conditioning—likely having to do with the Venom's Texas origins—demonstrate that creature comforts were not overlooked. The Venom GT offers a primitive, raw driving experience with the convenience of modern technology—a combination that appeals to today's younger, most active collectors. This is a low-mileage, speed-record-holding, ultra-rare American hypercar offered without reserve in Monterey, a moment not to be missed. Alongside the Venom GT, the American Performance Collection is bringing modern American horsepower to Monterey in spades. The collection features six extensively optioned Dodge and Chevrolet performance icons that are among the finest examples available. 'The American Performance Collection offers modern American automotive ferocity at its finest, with over 4,000 horsepower represented by just six cars,' says Harrison Platz, Car Specialist, Broad Arrow Auctions. 'Each of the cars was acquired from new by the owner and they all maintain extremely low miles today. For the rising generation of car collectors, these are the future of the hobby, with each car offering the best specifications, most interesting color combinations, and some of the highest horsepower examples available for the model.' The group includes: 2017 Dodge Viper GTC ACR Extreme Aero Package, a virtually new, time-capsule example of Dodge's ultimate track-capable supercar. Finished in custom matte gold enhanced with Black GTS stripes over a Black leather and Alcantara interior, it is one of six 'Black Stripe' editions built (Estimate: $325,000 - $375,000); 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme Aero Package, one of just 193 Viper ACRs built for 2017. Finished in optional Gunmetal Pearl, this is the ultimate street-legal track variant of the Viper with significant advancements in aerodynamics and suspension technology (Estimate: $270,000 - $300,000); 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, handsomely specified in Smoke Show paint with Black Alcantara/Laguna leather interior and equipped with the Super Stock Package including beefed-up Brembo four-piston brakes, widebody fender flares, and drag-optimized components (Estimate: $90,000 - $100,000, Offered without reserve); 2023 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, finished in Summit White with Satin Black hood wrap over a Jet Black interior with Red accents. This is a turnkey, road-legal track monster poised for both thrilling 650-horsepower performance and future collectability (Estimate: $85,000 - $95,000, Offered without reserve); 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible, optioned with the top-level 3LZ Preferred Equipment Group. Finished in Shark Grey Metallic with a Black Convertible top and a Kalahari interior, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-new example of one of the fastest convertible C7s ever produced (Estimate: $70,000 - $80,000, Offered without reserve); 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, finished in Plum Crazy Pearl Coat over a Black Premium Laguna Leather interior. This is a virtually new example of the most powerful muscle car when new, rated at 707 horsepower (Estimate: $55,000 - $65,000, Offered without reserve). This New Lego Shelby Cobra 427 S/C Build Set Is Literally a Kit Car
As the line between children's toys and adult toys becomes increasingly blurred, Lego has come right out and said it: The newly unveiled Lego Icons Shelby Cobra 427 S/C model car set has adult builders specifically in mind. Based on the iconic sports car from the 1960s, we can see why. The 1:10-scale model is exquisitely detailed. It includes doors, a trunk, a hood that opens; a steering wheel that turns; and an intricately recreated V-8 engine. It also comes with a little trophy, a toolbox that can go in the trunk, a fire extinguisher that goes between the seats, and a (tiny) $100 bill as a nod to Carroll Shelby's famous $100 bill game. Finally, it bears a reproduction of Shelby's signature on the glove box. On the outside, the model is unmistakable. Blue body color, sleek lines, white stripes, side-exit exhausts, big grille. Bring this along to your next cars and coffee event and be rightfully accused of showing up with a kit car. Composed of 1,241 pieces, the Cobra 427 S/C stands 5 inches tall and 7.5 inches wide. It's rated for ages 18 and up and will be available to the public starting on July 4. However, Lego Insiders get early access to it on July 1. The model is priced at $159.99. This is hardly the first hyper-detailed, meant-for-adults Lego build kit. It joins the Ferrari Daytona SP3 (3,778 pieces and costs $449.99), the 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) (1,410 pieces and costs $139.99), and the Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole (1,506 pieces and costs $179.99), among others. So popular—and apparently valuable—are some of these sets that there's a thriving Lego black market. It's the outcome every Beanie Babies collector wished for that never materialized. We weren't sure how the Shelby Cobra 427 S/C's curviness would translate as a Lego kit, but unsurprisingly, its designers pulled it off. It looks fantastic.

This 'Fountain of Youth' stunt left Natalie Portman, John Krasinski 'genuinely' terrified
This 'Fountain of Youth' stunt left Natalie Portman, John Krasinski 'genuinely' terrified Show Caption Hide Caption John Krasinski, Natalie Portman talk 'Fountain of Youth' car chase John Krasinski, Natalie Portman reveal they were genuinely frightened while shooting car chase in 'Fountain of Youth' To find immortality, Natalie Portman and John Krasinski first had to survive a white-knuckle car chase. In director Guy Ritchie's 'Fountain of Youth' (streaming now on Apple TV+), a globetrotting adventure in the 'Indiana Jones' and 'National Treasure' mold, the two A-listers play estranged siblings seeking the titular mythical spring. Early in the process, their characters find themselves being pursued through London at high speeds by cop cars, with Krasinski behind the wheel of a slick Shelby Cobra. Well, not technically. He and Portman acted in a pod car built for close-ups while stunt drivers did all the heavy lifting with the actual muscle car seen in wide shots. 'The stunt guys were like, 'If you asked us to drive this (yourself), you would die. ... But the one you and Natalie are in, pffft, we've built it to be like a Volvo,' " Krasinski says. "And I was like, 'Great. That sounds like safety.' "But I will say all those reactions are genuine. No one told us how fast we were going to go.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Adds Portman: 'I definitely was wishing I could wear a helmet. I was genuinely just screaming my head off. It was crazy.' Both actors have played in franchise sandboxes before: Portman starred as Padmé Amidala in the 'Star Wars' prequels and appeared as Thor's love interest Jane Foster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where 'A Quiet Place' mastermind Krasinski stopped by as Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. But 'Fountain of Youth' offered the chance to be on the ground floor of a potential new series intended for families. 'It's really fun to come in and get to imagine these characters without inheriting a legacy of something,' Portman says. After his first costume fitting, Krasinski remembers calling his wife Emily Blunt while strolling through the production office. 'I went, 'This is huge!' ' he says. 'I was scared, and then as soon as we started, it almost felt like the gates were open for just real collaboration.' But Luke (Krasinski) and Charlotte Purdue (Portman), who enjoyed a life of adventure before going their separate ways after their father's death, are very clearly not on the same page in the early goings-on of 'Fountain of Youth.' She's a gallery curator in London when her art-thief older brother shows up and steals a painting. It's for a good cause, though. Luke has been hired by a tech billionaire (Domhnall Gleeson) to locate the Fountain of Youth, a legendary locale the siblings' dad always wanted to find, and hidden messages on the back of six masterpieces hold the key to getting there. Working with Ritchie 'definitely provided a lot of that dynamic of this brother who's a little wilder (and) the sister who's a little bit more sensible and responsible,' Portman says. 'And of course, the one who had an impact on both of them, this father that was extremely wild and adventurous. One has kind of followed in his path and the other has driven her personality in antithesis to her father." Luke brings out a less buttoned-up side of Charlotte, who's gone through a messy divorce and brings her 12-year-old son (Benjamin Chivers) on their adventure. And Charlotte constantly reminds Luke not to steal artifacts he doesn't need. One of Krasinski's favorite parts of the movie was 'this whole idea of touching it, but not taking,' he says. 'Fountain of Youth' digs into real history, and Portman learned about things she 'had never heard of before,' like the Wicked Bible, Rembrandt's copies of his own works, and masterpieces that sank with the torpedoed Lusitania in 1915. 'I was like, 'Wait, where's the Lusitania?!' ' she says, noting that screenwriter James Vanderbilt threw in a detail from his own family history. (The Purdues have to break into a waterproof safe that belonged to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the writer's real-life great-grandfather, who died aboard the ship.) What mythic locale or priceless artifact will the Purdues pursue next? 'Let's see if people want a sequel first,' Portman cracks. But Krasinski thinks there's a certain nostalgia factor that will bring youngsters to 'Fountain of Youth.' 'I just recently watched 'Back to the Future' for the first time with my oldest daughter, and you could just sense something in the room. There was a promise that was being made with that movie to her that she hadn't had in a long time, if ever – maybe the 'Harry Potter' movies or something,' Krasinski says. 'There was a superpower to those movies that we grew up with, and I hope we get to keep bringing them back. 'It's so hard to find something that we can all watch as a family where it's not too young for us, it's not too adult for them, and that everybody enjoys it. And this hopefully is one of them.'

Shelby Cobra 427 to Celebrate 60 Years of Performance at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Lineage from First Production Cobra to Last 427 Will Be Exhibited PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., May 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the most intimidating cars of its era, the Shelby Cobra 427, marks its 60th anniversary this year. Named for the 427-cubic-inch Ford engine that powered it to dominate SCCA racing and set a performance benchmark that stood for years, the "big block Cobra" earned iconic status from the day it was introduced. To celebrate this anniversary, a Shelby Cobra class will take to the show field at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 17. "Carroll had a strong personal connection to Pebble Beach, racing and winning here in the 1950s and later sharing his cars at the Concours, so we are honored to feature his Cobras this year," said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. "The design, performance, and historic wins of these iconic race cars highlight the legendary pairing of Carroll and Shelby American with AC Cars and Ford Motor Company." Carroll Shelby, an automotive legend, is popularly known for his groundbreaking work with high-performance sports cars, such as the Le Mans-winning Ford GT40, but he first made his mark as a race driver, winning numerous races, including the last Pebble Beach Road Race, triumphing at Le Mans and competing in Formula 1. The Shelby Cobra came into being in 1962, pairing an AC Ace chassis with a Ford 260-cubic-inch V8 that was replaced by the larger 289 engine. The ultimate iteration, the Shelby Cobra 427 — with a new chassis, coil suspension, and powerful 427-cubic-inch engine — was introduced in 1965. "Ford's 'Total Performance' era of the 1960s was epic, equaled only today with the company's global motorsport program," stated Edsel B. Ford II. "Carroll Shelby was vital to our dominance in the sixties and his 427 Cobra put an exclamation point on that success! I am delighted that these iconic cars will be celebrated on this anniversary year." Four versions of the 427 Cobra were produced and will be showcased — "Comp" (competition), S/C (semi-competition), Street and Narrow Hip — in addition to the first and last production Cobras. "The Shelby Cobra remains an automotive icon even 60 years after its introduction," said Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby and board member of Carroll Shelby International. "Few cars have achieved the fame and staying power of the Shelby Cobra. Not only does it represent performance, this sportscar represents American ingenuity! Simple but effective, it was created with grit and determination." The Pebble Beach Concours will also marque the 75th anniversary of Formula 1, the centennials of Chrysler, Invicta, Moretti and the Rolls-Royce Phantom and will celebrate the creations of Virgil Exner. This New Italian Sports Car Takes You Back in Time with a Free-Breathing V-8 and a Manual
Automobili Mignatta, a new Italian automaker, has debuted the Rina—a sports car with no windshield and a sleek carbon-fiber body. Under the hood lies a naturally aspirated V-8 that feeds the rear wheels via a six-speed manual. The cockpit is devoid of screens, instead boasting aluminum and carbon-fiber trim, analog gauges, and brown leather. Between Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, and countless others, Italy has a rich history of producing jaw-dropping sports cars. Now there's another name to add to the list: Automobili Mignatta, a new startup that is based out of Valfenera d'Asti in Piedmont, around 25 miles outside of Turin. The company's first car, the Rina, was revealed this week and pairs classically beautiful bodywork with the equally classic combination of a naturally aspirated V-8 engine and a manual transmission. The Rina's monocoque is made from carbon fiber, as is the handcrafted barchetta-style body, which draws inspiration from Italian sports cars of the 1960s. The curvature of the fenders, oval-shaped headlights, and lack of a windshield call to mind classics like the Shelby Cobra or Maserati 450S. The Rina has an athletic stance and perfect proportions, and small visors sprout up in front of each occupant to divert the air flowing over the long hood. Beneath the bodywork lies a 5.0-liter V-8 that remains free from both turbochargers and superchargers. The naturally aspirated unit is hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission that delivers power to the rear wheels only. There's no official word on where the company has sourced the engine or transmission, while official power and torque outputs will be revealed later. Automobili Mignatta says the engine has been tuned by Italtecnica Engineering, which worked with Podium Advanced Technologies on a 5.0-liter V-8 for the Nardone 928, a slick restomod. The engine in that modernized Porsche makes 450 hp and 383 pound-feet of torque. Italtecnica Engineering has also designed and developed engines for several other restomods, including the Kimera EVO37 and Totem GT Super. The Rina rides on 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, all shod in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires. A Brembo brake system is fitted with six-piston front calipers and four-pot units in back. The cabin—if you can call it that on a car with no roof—is straightforward, with an array of buttons and analog gauges. The speedometer is mounted on the center console, while the tachometer sits behind the steering wheel. Automobili Mignatta is proud that the Rina has zero screens. The interior also pairs aluminum trim with rich brown leather and carbon fiber. Only 30 units will be built each year, the company says, and prices will start at around $290,000. The Rina likely won't be road-legal in the United States, but that won't stop us from dreaming about ripping up and down the Italian coast, wind in our hair as the V-8 engine roars and the shifter clicks into gear.
