This New Italian Sports Car Takes You Back in Time with a Free-Breathing V-8 and a Manual

Automobili Mignatta, a new Italian automaker, has debuted the Rina—a sports car with no windshield and a sleek carbon-fiber body.
Under the hood lies a naturally aspirated V-8 that feeds the rear wheels via a six-speed manual.
The cockpit is devoid of screens, instead boasting aluminum and carbon-fiber trim, analog gauges, and brown leather.
Between Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, and countless others, Italy has a rich history of producing jaw-dropping sports cars. Now there's another name to add to the list: Automobili Mignatta, a new startup that is based out of Valfenera d'Asti in Piedmont, around 25 miles outside of Turin. The company's first car, the Rina, was revealed this week and pairs classically beautiful bodywork with the equally classic combination of a naturally aspirated V-8 engine and a manual transmission.
The Rina's monocoque is made from carbon fiber, as is the handcrafted barchetta-style body, which draws inspiration from Italian sports cars of the 1960s. The curvature of the fenders, oval-shaped headlights, and lack of a windshield call to mind classics like the Shelby Cobra or Maserati 450S. The Rina has an athletic stance and perfect proportions, and small visors sprout up in front of each occupant to divert the air flowing over the long hood.
Beneath the bodywork lies a 5.0-liter V-8 that remains free from both turbochargers and superchargers. The naturally aspirated unit is hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission that delivers power to the rear wheels only. There's no official word on where the company has sourced the engine or transmission, while official power and torque outputs will be revealed later.
Automobili Mignatta says the engine has been tuned by Italtecnica Engineering, which worked with Podium Advanced Technologies on a 5.0-liter V-8 for the Nardone 928, a slick restomod. The engine in that modernized Porsche makes 450 hp and 383 pound-feet of torque. Italtecnica Engineering has also designed and developed engines for several other restomods, including the Kimera EVO37 and Totem GT Super.
The Rina rides on 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, all shod in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires. A Brembo brake system is fitted with six-piston front calipers and four-pot units in back.
The cabin—if you can call it that on a car with no roof—is straightforward, with an array of buttons and analog gauges. The speedometer is mounted on the center console, while the tachometer sits behind the steering wheel. Automobili Mignatta is proud that the Rina has zero screens. The interior also pairs aluminum trim with rich brown leather and carbon fiber.
Only 30 units will be built each year, the company says, and prices will start at around $290,000. The Rina likely won't be road-legal in the United States, but that won't stop us from dreaming about ripping up and down the Italian coast, wind in our hair as the V-8 engine roars and the shifter clicks into gear.

Believe it or not, Frank Stephenson , the famed car designer, is still gushing about the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. The Italian automaker revealed the car nearly two years ago, pledging to build just 33 examples. It's a faithful tribute to the 33 Stradale of the late 1960s , considering the quagmire of modern safety constraints, and it's a car that Stephenson calls one of the "most stunning" of the last few years. The Stradale revival has retro-inspired sheet metal and a mid-engine layout, just like the original. However, despite Stephenson's praise, he reveals to Top Gear the car is "still not perfect," and that there's "room for improvement." He criticizes the 33's chunkier rear-end design , noting the license plate's distracting location and other styling flubs. Stephenson praises the front-end design of the Alfa , however, calling it "fantastic," although he questions whether the headlights should have been rounder. Alfa revealed the 33 Stradale in August 2023 , even though it had sold all of them nearly a year earlier. The car is available with two powertrains— a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 engine or a battery-electric setup. Alfa never revealed the split between the two choices, but he admitted that it had " just a few EVs " in development despite it being the more powerful option. The EV version produces 750 horsepower and could sprint to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds. The V-6, meanwhile, makes 620 hp, sending power to the rear wheels. Alfa announced it delivered the first example last December. And if you want the company to make more cars like the 33 Stradale, you're going to have to buy more SUVs first . Maserati and Alfa Romeo share a great deal of history; these two iconic marques are two of the hottest names in the premium segment. But things have become lukewarm for both brands, with uncertainty lying in their future within the Stellantis umbrella. With sales declining, Italian production plunging, and no new products on the horizon, Maserati is currently stagnant with no clear path forward. The same goes for Alfa Romeo, which is also having issues with its best-selling SUV. Needless to say, both Italian marques are in dire need of a concrete turnaround plan. It's happening soon, according to Maserati and Alfa Romeo CEO Santo Ficili, just in time for the appointment of Stellantis' new CEO, Antonio Filosa, who will start his regime on June 23, 2025. In an interview with Reuters, Ficili said that Maserati will reveal a business plan, just as soon as Filosa steps up to the plate. He's quite optimistic about the future of the brand and confident that Filosa, an Italian national, will back whatever is in place for the iconic marque. He also denied that Stellantis is planning to sell Maserati – a rumor that circulated last year but has been refuted since. "We have clear ideas about what we want to do, we hope we can be ready very soon. Let's wait for Antonio to take up his job," Ficili told the publication. He shared that new products are on the horizon, along with restructured relationships with dealers and improvements to its service network. Ficili added that all Maserati models will continue to be designed, engineered, and manufactured in Italy – a bold move, considering the current tariff woes in the U.S., where a substantial portion (30%) of the brand's sales come from. But what about Alfa Romeo? Ficili, also the head of Alfa Romeo, has confirmed that Stellantis will review its strategy, too. He didn't share further details about this, as it seems like the automaker is focusing on Maserati first. We should know more by the end of the month. Alfa Romeo is currently struggling, not only with sales but also with the development of its upcoming products. Specifically, the next-generation Stelvio, Alfa's best-selling model, is in doubt since the company backpedaled from its full-electric lineup strategy, now heading to a hybrid path. However, a new post today suggests something new will be revealed next week: Of note, 15% of Alfa Romeo's sales are from America, the world's second-biggest automotive market.
