"Elon, His Teams Are...": Indian-Origin Techie Quits xAI To Join OpenAI

The Indian-origin head of infrastructure engineering at Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has resigned to join OpenAI. Uday Ruddarraju, who spent over a year at xAI, was instrumental in building Colossus, a massive supercomputer consisting of more than 200,000 GPUs, and in training Grok 3, one of the company's most advanced AI models. "Jensen Huang (Nvidia CEO) was right, Elon and his teams are singular in what they can achieve. Grateful to have played a small part in shaping the future of AI Compute from the inside," he wrote on X on Tuesday, July 8. After an unforgettable ride, I've decided to move on from @xai and yesterday was my last day. When I first joined, I thought everyone was absolutely nuts for thinking we could deploy 100K GPUs in 4 months, especially without a fully functioning site. Watching us go and double… — Uday Ruddarraju (@udayruddarraju) July 8, 2025 Uday Ruddarraju expressed gratitude to Elon Musk and the xAI team for the opportunity to contribute to their ambitious infrastructure goals. "Thank you @elonmusk and everyone at xAI for the rare opportunity to help build something truly foundational with Colossus. It was a privilege to be part of a mission this bold, and to see from the inside what relentless focus and execution really look like," he wrote. "Reporting into Elon and learning directly from him was definitely the best part about working at xAI," he added. Shortly after leaving xAI, Mr Ruddarraju was named among four high-profile hires at OpenAI. The move was announced by OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman in an internal Slack message and later shared publicly. "Excited to join you, Greg Brockman!" he wrote, reposting the announcement. Joining Mr Ruddarraju at OpenAI are David Lau, former senior software leader at Tesla; Mike Dalton, who previously worked at xAI and Robinhood; and Angela Fan, an AI researcher from Meta. The new hires bring deep experience in large-scale computing and AI infrastructure. Both Mr Ruddarraju and Dalton are expected to contribute to Stargate, OpenAI's ambitious infrastructure project aimed at powering the next generation of AI systems. Speaking to Wired, Mr Ruddarraju described Stargate as "a high-stakes infrastructure challenge that aligns well with the kind of ambitious work" he enjoys.

3 best sci-fi movies on Prime Video right now

Looking for something intellectual to chew on? Prime Video's sci-fi movies section is bigger than ever, but with so many titles flooding in regularly, you might have trouble figuring out what to watch first. While flashy blockbusters and well-known franchises tend to hog the spotlight, there's a deep bench of underrated, thought-provoking science fiction films that deserve your time. Some of those may very well be blockbusters on their own, like "Interstellar" — but when's the last time you took a moment to appreciate them? Whether you're into alternate realities, time loop mind-benders or eerie glimpses of the future, there are tons of gems on the platform to dig into. Here are three of the best sci-fi movies on Prime Video that you can stream right now. "Stargate" (the movie, not the series) kicks off with one of the most intriguing premises in sci-fi: What if an ancient alien device unearthed in Egypt turned out to be a gateway to another planet? When one milquetoast linguist (James Spader) deciphers the symbols on the mysterious artifact, he's swept up into a top-secret military expedition led by a gritty, no-nonsense colonel (Kurt Russell). On the other side of the stargate lies a distant world that resembles ancient Egypt, ruled by a powerful alien posing as a god. And it's this ragtag team's mission to understand it, come hell or high water. Watch "Stargate" on Prime Video now "Coherence" begins as a casual dinner party between old friends but spirals into chaos when a comet passes overhead and warps reality itself. The power flickers and phone signals vanish, and the group of friends slowly begins to realize that their neighborhood may now contain multiple versions of themselves, each making different choices in diverging timelines. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. What follows is a race to determine who's who, who's a potential other, and what their other selves' true motives are. What's more, how do they get back to normal and to their "normal" world? This mind-bending cult favorite will keep you guessing until the very end. Watch "Coherence" on Prime Video now In a future where Earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable, former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is recruited for a last-ditch mission. His job is to travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for mankind. No pressure, right? What begins as a seemingly benign spacefaring journey quickly becomes something deeper as Cooper realizes nearly two decades have passed during his journey. He must come to terms with his startling findings and the future awaiting humanity as time ticks down. Watch "Interstellar" on Prime Video now

What Is OpenAI's Scaling Team? Tesla, xAI, Meta Engineers Join Their Ranks as AI Hiring Competition Heats Up

After Meta made headlines for poaching top AI talent from rival companies to build its superintelligence team, another tech giant—OpenAI—is now making a similar move. To advance its AI infrastructure, the company has brought in four senior technology leaders from Tesla, xAI, and Meta, aiming to stay competitive in the race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). The newly recruited specialists will be part of the company's scaling team, which oversees OpenAI's high-performance computing infrastructure, data centers, and tools that underpin models like GPT-4 and beyond. The hires include David Lau, the former VP of Software Engineering at Tesla; Uday Ruddaraju and Mike Dalton from xAI; and Meta's AI researcher Angela Fan. Ruddarraju and Dalton have previously played a key role in building Colossus, a supercomputer with more than 200,000 GPUs. The additions were revealed in an internal Slack message by Greg Brockman, OpenAI's cofounder, who also leads the scaling team. The division plays a behind-the-scenes part but is regarded as mission-critical for training and deploying OpenAI's most powerful models. It also powers Stargate, a next-gen AI compute system. "Infrastructure is where the research meets reality," Ruddarraju said in a statement, noting that Stargate was a perfect match for attacking ambitious, systems-level problems. Lau expressed a similar sentiment: "Rapid progress towards value-aligned AGI is the most fulfilling mission I can conceive of, for the next stage of my career." The new hires were confirmed by OpenAI through a spokesperson, Hannah Wong, who said the company was "building top-tier infrastructure and research teams to ensure that we can deliver AI that is safe and beneficial to everyone" and to "bring the benefits of AI to hundreds of millions," she said. The move to hire comes as tech giants jockey for position. Zuckerberg has been personally courting AI researchers, making them offers they can't refuse. Meta recently poached at least seven researchers away from OpenAI and other rivals and is aggressively growing its Superintelligence Labs. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are also fighting. Musk, who had been a cofounder of OpenAI, is currently suing the organization over the nonprofit-to-for-profit shift and its partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI is also suing Musk for business interference.

AI talent wars: Altman's OpenAI poaches top engineers from Musk, Zuckerberg firms

Meta started the trend last month, and now OpenAI is following it. The Sam Altman-led artificial intelligence (AI) forerunner has poached four top engineers from rivals run by Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg , according to a Wired ChatGPT parent has hired David Lau, former vice president of software engineering at Tesla , for its scaling team, per the report. The company has also onboarded Uday Ruddarraju, the former head of infrastructure engineering at xAI and X; Mike Dalton, an infrastructure engineer from xAI; and Angela Fan, an AI researcher from and Dalton worked on building the 200,000-GPU supercomputer, Colossus, for xAI. Claimed to be the world's biggest supercomputer, it is used to train Grok AI scaling team is responsible for the backend hardware and software systems and data centres, including its $500 billion AI infrastructure project, Stargate. This team is critical to OpenAI's work towards developing artificial general intelligence (AGI)—AI systems that can match human-level next big thing in AI—has also become a point of contention between OpenAI and its significant investor, Microsoft. The tech giant wants to scrap terms of its current collaboration with the AI major that limit its access to the latter's AGI capabilities . High-stakes talks between the two hit a snag in June, with Microsoft reportedly prepared to walk away Meanwhile, Meta continues to poach top AI talent from rivals, including Apple's head AI executive, Ruoming Pang , its latest hire. Pang, the manager in charge of Apple's foundation models team, will join for a multimillion-dollar salary, Bloomberg newly created Superintelligence Labs intends to create AI systems that surpass human capabilities. Zuckerberg has been hiring aggressively for this venture, offering $100 million bonuses and the chance to bag $300 million in the next three to four finalised a $14.3 billion investment in data labelling startup Scale AI last month. In return, it onboarded Scale cofounder Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer to lead its Superintelligence Labs. The startup provides vast amounts of accurately labelled data to clients like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google for training their AI has bagged top talent from companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and GitHub, after top-level exits and a poor reception for its latest open-source Llama 4 model.
