New Ross crews sprint for glory in Fermoy
The strong turnout and competitive spirit showcased the club's depth and commitment to sprint racing as the Fermoy Sprints is a unique fixture on the Irish rowing calendar, featuring short, high-intensity races under 500 metres, and less than a quarter of the standard 2 km course rowed by junior athletes. These races demand explosive starts, razor-sharp focus, and flawless execution, as even the smallest mistake can be the difference between victory and defeat. The junior girls continued their rich vein of form, taking home two victories in Fermoy on the weekend. In the Junior Girls 14s single scull, Katie Nolan put in another trademark performance starting fast from the stakeboat and powering home to win her heat and record the fastest time of the day for Junior 14 girls which earned her a gold medal for the second week running in a single scull. New Ross was also very well represented in this event, where Janey Cashman put in a fine performance finishing strong to place second in her heat and hold off a strong finish from the Castleconnel sculler in the next lane. Nolan and Cashman then combined for the second win of the weekend in the Junior Girls 14s double scull. The New Ross girls are known for their fast starts and desire to win. And just as was the case in the 1k classic, the girls didn't disappoint the expectations of their New Ross supporters as they dominated their final putting clear water between themselves and the competing crews from Cork and Capoquin. Nolan and Cashman are on super form in the double this year, sweeping competing crews aside in all but one regatta this season. Nolan was also very unfortunate in the Junior Girls 15s single scull, as after the heats she lay in third place which would ordinarily have qualified her for the final and given her another shot at glory, but, according to New Ross Boat Club, 'due to a clerical error by the event officials, she was omitted from the final and lost the opportunity to contest another final.' Another noteworthy performance was delivered by Isabel Rossiter who was rowing senior for the first time, finishing in a very credible seventh place in an experienced field of scullers. Meanwhile, the junior boys also gave the supporters a cause for cheer throughout the competition. Early in the regatta, the junior boys 16s 4x+ crew of Aogán Slater (bow), Michael Murray (2), Henry Roche (3), Cormac Crotty (Stroke) coxed by Kevin Phelan put in an impressive row in the heat to qualify them for the final. They put in another outstanding performance in the final to place third in a hotly contested race against more experienced crews from Cappoquin and Waterford. Not to be outdone, New Ross was well represented in the boys junior 18s double scull with two crews competing where Liam Crotty (bow) and Kevin Phelan (Stroke) were joined by Donnchadh Slater (Bow) and Ben Cashman (stroke). Phelan and Crotty won their heat comfortably to progress to the final where they finished second in a fantastic race. Slater and Cashman also put in a really strong performance, narrowly missing out on the final and finishing fourth overall, on which is commendable since the crew is eligible to race in the same event next year. The success for New Ross continued in the boys junior 18s singles skulls where all four oarsmen competed in single skulls with Liam Crotty qualifying for the final where he finished second in a close race. Kevin Phelan also dashed down the course but narrowly missed out on a place in the final, while Ben Cashman and Donnchadh Slater had excellent outings and are primed to continue their progress in the next regatta. There was other noteworthy performances from Cormac Crotty and Aogán Slater in the single sculls and Slater again teamed up with Henry Roche in the 16s double scull where they finished eighth of 18 crews in a strong field in what was just their second outing as a double pairing. The New Ross boys also performed superbly in the coxed quads where the 18s crew, of Slater (Bow), Cashman (2), Crotty (3) and Phelan (stroke) coxed by Janey Cashman, placed third with a blanket finish between the three competing crews where a photo was required to determine who's bow ball crossed the line first. Not to be outdone, the Masters rowers put in a fine performance in the mixed coxed crew of Paula Whelan (Bow), Mick Dwyer (2), Dave MacCarthy (3), Amy O'Hanlon (Stroke) coxed by Janey Cashman. The New Ross crew got off to a fast start and battled hard down the course, bow ball to bow ball against the home favourites from Fermoy in a race which had the spectators on their feet. Everything was to play for with the finish in sight, but Fermoy just had a little extra on the day and edged in front just before the hooter sounded in an exciting finish applauded by the gallery. There was also a very credible performance by the Women's Masters 4X+ which came ninth overall as the crew of Paula Whelan (Bow), Ursula Quirke (2), Anna Dwyer (3) and Talitha Doran (Stroke) coxed by Janey Cashman continue to go from strength to strength in every regatta they compete in. 'This regatta served as excellent preparation for the club's junior athletes, who now turn their focus to the Irish National Rowing Championships, taking place at the National Rowing Centre in Cork from July 18 to July 20. With strong performances and valuable race experience under their belts, the New Ross juniors are well-positioned to take on the nation's best,' said Dave Roche, of New Ross Boat Club. Also commenting on the event, Captain Amy O'Hanlon from the club said: 'Once again a massive well done to all who took part. It was a great day of fun for everyone, and it was non-stop from the moment we hit the quay until the last race. It was a great way to wrap up the season for some of our members. Roll on the championships'. New Ross Boat Club is proud to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of all rowers who represented the club at Fermoy: Cormac Crotty, Michael Murray, Aogán Slater, Henry Roche, Katie Nolan, Janey Cashman, Liam Crotty, Kevin Phelan Ben Cashman, Donnchadh Slater, Isabel Rossiter, Talitha Doran, Anna Dwyer, Ursula Quirke, Paula Whelan, Amy O'Hanlon, Dave MacCarthy, Mick Dwyer New Ross Boat Club Full Results from 1k Classic: 1st place in Heat of Girls J14 1x, 1st overall: K. Hidden health benefits from weight-loss jabs revealed
Weight loss injections, including popular drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro, may offer a protective shield against serious conditions such as dementia and stroke, a new study has indicated. The research also suggests that individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity who are prescribed these medications could face a reduced risk of premature death. Academics behind the study noted that while the efficacy of GLP agonist drugs – such as semaglutide (found in Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) – in managing weight and blood sugar levels is widely recognised, their wider health benefits have remained less understood. The comprehensive study, conducted by experts in Taiwan, examined data from 60,000 people worldwide, with an average age of 58, all diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Roughly half of the participants were given GLP agonist drugs. These medications function by curbing appetite, slowing digestion, reducing the liver's sugar output, and enhancing the body's insulin production when required. The other half used other anti-diabetic medication. During a seven-year follow-up period, researchers found that people given the GLP agonist drugs appeared to have a 37 per cent lower risk of dementia and a 19 per cent reduced risk of stroke. They were also 30 per cent less likely to die during the follow-up period. When researchers looked at the data further, they found even greater benefits in people aged 60 or older, women, and those with a body mass index score of 30 to 40. They found no differences in Parkinson's disease or brain bleeds. The academics said their findings suggest 'potential neuroprotective and cerebrovascular benefits' of the drugs but they called for more studies to confirm the findings. 'These findings suggest that semaglutide and tirzepatide may offer neuroprotective and cerebrovascular benefits beyond glycemic control, potentially improving long-term cognitive and survival outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity,' they wrote in the journal JAMA Network Open. Commenting on the study, Professor Tara Spires-Jones, director of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh and group leader in the UK Dementia Research Institute, said: 'This is a very interesting study adding to evidence that GLP1 receptor agonists are associated with a lower risk of dementia in people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. 'This type of study cannot determine whether the drugs reduced disease risk by directly protecting the brain. 'It is highly likely that effectively treating type 2 diabetes and obesity would reduce dementia and stroke risk as they are known risk factors for these conditions. 'Further work is needed including randomised clinical trials to confirm these drugs are protective in people with diabetes and obesity and other trials are needed to determine whether these drugs will be protective in people who do not have type 2 diabetes and obesity.'

"PM Modi is receiving honours because country improved relations with everyone in last 70-75 years": Pawan Khera
New Delhi [India], July 4 (ANI): Congress leader Pawan Khera on Friday aimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent visit to Trinidad and Tobago, claiming that he went out to 'implement' a list of countries that have remained unvisited by the former Prime Ministers. As Prime Minister Modi is set to receive Trinidad and Tobago's highest honours, reacting to this, Khera said that these honours are the result of India's sustained diplomatic efforts over the past several decades. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader said, 'He created a list of which prime ministers visited which countries and which countries they did not visit, and then he went out to implement that list. For the past 11 years, news has emerged about 'Master Stroke.' PM Modi has visited a country where no other prime minister has gone in 50 years.' 'After visiting there, more news came: he received a great honour... In actuality, the country gains respect and that too because, in the last 70-75 years, our country has improved its relations with everyone... PM Modi is receiving honours today because of this progress. Therefore, everyone should understand that PM Modi is not the country; every award that the Prime Minister gets, it's the country that is here.' Earlier today, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, calling him a 'super premium frequent flier PM.' In a social media post on X, Ramesh wrote, 'The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM will be in Trinidad & Tobago today.' Ramesh also recalled a meeting between Eric Williams, Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister and then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during her visit to Port of Spain in October 1968, which had been commemorated with a film by the hosts. This is PM Modi's first visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation since 1999. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. (ANI)

New Ross junior rowers triumph at premier national event – ‘We are incredibly proud of them'
Competing against the best crews in Ireland, the club's young athletes delivered impressive performances in both the boys' and girls' junior events. Their skill, teamwork, and resilience were on full display as they achieved a commendable 20th place in the club trophy. This was doubly impressive considering New Ross's rowing team was much smaller than most of the other 46 clubs competing. The first New Ross victory was delivered on Saturday afternoon where Katey Nolan (Bow) and Janey Cashman (Stroke) stormed to victory in the Junior Girls 14s 2x. Nolan and Cashman lead from the off after a fantastic start and stride put them in control before the 250m mark. There was clear water between them and the competition at the halfway mark and from there the New Ross girls crew upped the power to dominate the race from start to finish, winning by a distance and leaving all other boats in their wake. The next victory came on Sunday morning, when Katie Nolan, rowing up an age-group in the Junior Girls J15 single scull, took to the water. Katie was in control of the race from the first stroke and by the 500m mark had a canvas lead on her nearest rivals. In the second half when Nolan increased the rate and upped the power, she began to stretch out to a boat length lead as the finish line approached and further extended that in the to put clear water between her boat and the Enniskillen sculler that placed second by the time the hooter sounded. Nolan also placed 3rd in u14 single scull to cap off a great weekend for the New Ross oarswoman. New Ross's final win of the event was delivered by Niamh Brennan (Bow) and Janey Cashman (Stroke) in a thrilling Junior Girls J15 2x final. Brennan not long off the water, after a great 2nd place finish in her single scull, teamed up with Cashman who was rowing up an age-group to complete the New Ross crew. Another fast start from New Ross ensured they were in control of the race right from the stakeboat. The New Ross crew never looked under pressure and had clear water between themselves and the competition by the halfway point. Not content with that, Brennan and Cashman increased their stroke rate above 40 stroke per minute to power home with clear water between them and the other crews in the race for an impressive victory. There were also commendable debut performances by Junior boys Cormac Crotty, Henry Roche and Aogán Slater in a single and double scull respectively. Crotty put in a great performance to finish 4th place in the Boys Junior 15 single scull, finishing very strong in an exciting and close race finish. Roche and Slater teamed up for a fantastic first regatta outing in the double scull. The crew got off to a great start and battled hard down the course against a crew from Bann Rowing club and were just pipped on the line for a 6th place finish. New Ross Boat Club Masters section also travelled in force to Lough Rinn and there were some commendable finishes with Stephen Ryan coming 3rd in his category of the Men's Masters Single Scull while Ger Morey (bow) and Paula Whelan (stroke) gelled well to finish a praiseworthy 3rd place in their category of the Women's Masters Double Scull. 'We are incredibly proud of our rowers and their achievements at the Rowing Ireland 1k Classic. Thank you to all the coaches, parents and safety boat drivers who helped the team prepare. It was great to see New Ross represented so well at one of the premium Rowing Ireland regattas.' said Amy O'Hanlon, Captain, New Ross Boat Club. Adding to the Captain's comments, coach Ger Morey said: 'Its just so great to see the kids enjoying themselves and achieving their goals after putting in so much hard work throughout the year.' The Chairperson of New Ross Boat Club, Sean Sutton, also commended the members on their recent success and said: 'Janey, Katie and Niamh performed superbly to combined for three victories. The girls have worked hard in training and deserve huge credit for their achievements.' "There was also fantastic debut by Cormac in his single scull and both Aogan and Henry can be very proud of their performance on their debut in the double scull,' he added. Brain Health
Brain health involves the optimal functioning of the brain across various domains, including cognitive function, motor skills, sensory function, and emotional health. There are many different types of brain diseases. Dementia is characterized by a decline in overall thinking abilities, affecting problem-solving skills, memory, language, and other factors that make daily life more challenging. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. Depression is a mental health disorder that negatively impacts how you feel, think, and act. A stroke occurs when the blood vessels carrying oxygenated blood and nutrients to the brain are blocked by a clot or rupture. Many other types of brain diseases can significantly affect overall brain health. Top factors contributing to decreased brain health include high blood pressure, kidney disease, elevated glucose and cholesterol levels, alcohol use, poor diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, poor social engagement, and high stress. Ways to boost brain health and slow mental aging include exercising regularly, getting regular mental stimulation, eating a balanced diet, optimizing gut health, managing stress levels, staying socially engaged, limiting alcohol consumption, considering brain-boosting supplements and balancing hormone levels.
