Tribal groups warn Centre, Raj govt over unmet demands
1 2 Jaipur: Political and social tribal organisations Saturday issued a stern warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, cautioning against delay in meeting their longstanding demands. These include creation of a separate Bhil Pradesh state, enhanced reservation benefits in Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) areas, halting the delisting process of converted tribals, and ensuring proper utilisation of Centre–State funds earmarked for tribal welfare. The warning came during rallies and marches held across the tribal-dominated districts of Banswara, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh, and Udaipur to mark World Tribal Day. Leading the charge, Banswara MP Rajkumar Roat accused the state govt of adopting an anti-tribal stance. Roat criticised the 2025–26 budget allocation for tribal welfare, which was reduced to Rs 250 crore from the previous Rs 1,500 crore. He alleged that the govt "misled the community" by adding the unspent Rs 1,500 crore from last year's budget to the fresh Rs 250 crore allocation and presenting it as a Rs 1,750 crore package. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This AI Tutor Lets You Learn Languages Your Way Talkpal AI Learn More Undo "This is fooling the tribal community," he said at a public meeting in Banswara. Earlier in the day, the Bhil Pradesh Vidhyarthi Morcha organised a march through the city, urging people to gather at the Mela Ground rally in Banswara. Kanakmal Katara of the Adivasi Aarakshan Manch, speaking at a separate event in Banswara, reiterated the demand for a 6.5% sub-quota for southern Rajasthan tribals within the state's 12% Scheduled Tribe reservation. "Without this, TSP tribals will continue to be deprived of benefits," Katara said, accusing Meena tribals from eastern Rajasthan of monopolising the quota's benefits. At block-level programmes organised by political outfits, including the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) and Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), activists raised slogans of "TSP pe pehla haq Adivasi ka" (Tribals have the first right on TSP). BTP state president Vela Ram Ghogra alleged that tribals were being denied their rights under the Forest Rights Act. Referring to the Jowar mines project, Ghogra claimed that promises of education and healthcare facilities for local tribals were ignored, while non-tribals settled in the area. "We will soon launch a campaign to evict the Jowar mines," he warned. Heavy police were deployed at all events anticipating tension with non-tribals. Delisting of converted tribals may jeopardise TSP areas, say leaders
1 2 Jaipur: Tribal social groups have sounded an alarm over the Union govt's reported move to delist tribal people who have converted to other religions, particularly Christianity. The concern comes ahead of a major meeting convened in Banswara on World Tribal Day (Saturday), where tribal organisations and allied political parties are expected to formally oppose the proposal, calling it a threat to both the identity and entitlements of tribal communities. During the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the Centre signalled its intention to review the tribal status of those who converted, particularly in recent decades. The move, if implemented, could have sweeping effects in Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) areas — blocks that qualify for targeted welfare spending if they retain a tribal population of at least 50%. Vela Ram Ghogra, State President of the Bhartiya Tribal Party (BTP), called the proposed move a "recolonisation agenda" pushed by the RSS and BJP. "The tribal populace may have converted into Christianity and, in very minimal numbers, to Islam or Buddhism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo But this change is only superficial — they have not left their culture, customs, or tribal way of life," Ghogra said. "Delisting them would mean institutional segregation from their own community. We will lose them forever. RSS and BJP are playing with fire by trying to import their communal politics into the tribal regions, which have so far remained untouched by mainstream polarisation." Ghogra said non-tribal populations in TSP-designated areas across 12 states — including Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh — already grew substantially since the 1971 Census, shrinking tribal representation and resources. Udaipur MP Manna Lal Rawat, affiliated with the BJP, emerged as a key proponent of the delisting campaign. He recently raised the issue in Parliament, arguing that converted tribals continue to enjoy reservations in govt jobs and educational institutions, despite changing their faith. "A significant portion of budget meant for ST is being spent on those who converted," Rawat said in Parliament. "This is a gross violation of the Constitution and undermines the purpose of affirmative action. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BJP SCs Morcha criticises State govt. for diverting SCP, TSP funds for guarantee schemes
BJP Scheduled Castes Morcha has criticised the State government for diverting funds meant for Special Component Plan and Scheduled Tribe Sub-Plan (SCP/TSP) to the guarantee schemes. State vice-president of BJP SCs Morcha Ambaraya Ashtagi, addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi on Thursday, said that the SCP and TSP plans were introduced for the empowerment of the oppressed sections by allocating exclusive funds in addition to the regular expenditure on various welfare schemes. The SCP-TSP schemes have been designed to empower Scheduled Castes socially, economically and educationally by providing opportunities for skill development, access to quality education and promoting social justice. But diverting these funds for the guarantee schemes has hindered the core objectives of the SCP, TSP schemes, Mr. Ashtagi said. In all, the State government has diverted ₹39,000 crore for the guarantee schemes. It has diverted ₹11,114 crore in 2023-24, ₹14,282 crore in 2024-25 and ₹11,896.84 crore in 2025-26. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah came to power in the name of AHINDA (a coalition of minorities, backward classes and Dalits) by promising to empower these communities. But he has failed to implement any concrete programmes to uplift Dalits and his decisions are depriving the rights of Scheduled Castes, Mr. Ashtagi said.

TSP constable found ‘smuggling' phone to Tihar inmate, probe on
New Delhi: A departmental inquiry has been initiated after a constable from the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) Force was found allegedly involved in smuggling a mobile phone to a high-risk inmate lodged in Tihar Jail. According to sources, the incident came to light last week following a surprise inspection conducted at Central Jail No. 3, a high-security wing that houses several notorious criminals, including gangsters. During the check, jail authorities recovered a mobile phone from one of the inmates. Upon examining the device, investigators from the Tihar Jail intelligence unit discovered suspicious chat records and call logs. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi "A scan of the phone's data revealed that one of the numbers frequently contacted belonged to the TSP constable. This immediately raised red flags, prompting further investigation into the constable's activities within the jail premises," said a source. Sources familiar with the investigation said that the constable, who was on duty inside the high-security zone, had access to high-security wards and may have used his position to smuggle in unauthorised items, including mobile phones. Following the discovery, the intelligence team set up by the jail authorities carried out a targeted search of the constable's barrack. During the raid, another mobile phone was found hidden among his belongings. Preliminary findings suggested that it was also intended to be handed over to another inmate within the prison complex. "There is a possibility that he was not able to hand over the second phone because his duty point was changed a few days ago," said the source. Both the phones have been sent for forensic examination to retrieve any deleted data, call history and messages. Authorities are investigating whether the constable acted alone or was part of a larger network facilitating smuggling of illegal items into the jail. Sources said strict action will be taken based on the findings of the departmental inquiry. The jail authorities have also informed the TSP commandant about the incident. In 2003, a TSP constable was caught with a 50-gram packet of charas at Tihar Jail. He was later remanded in 14-day judicial custody. Tamil Nadu Special Police Force personnel — responsible for managing external security, including patrolling and conducting searches — have been deployed in Tihar Jail since the early 1980s to help curb corruption and strengthen security. A key reason for their deployment in a north Indian prison was the language barrier — since they primarily speak their native language, it was believed it would reduce the likelihood of collusion with inmates and staff, making them less susceptible to local influences.
