Records Are...: How Did Brian Lara React To Wian Mulder Not Breaking His 400-Run Record? SA Star Reveals

Wiaan Mulder made headlines not just for scoring a triple century, but also for what he chose not to do after it. Standing in as captain for South Africa in the second Test against Zimbabwe, Mulder reached 367 not out. That incredible knock had everyone talking about the possibility of him breaking Brian Lara's famous record of 400 not out in a Test match and considering his grit and the opposition bowlers it was a cakewalkk. But when play resumed after the first session on Day 2, Mulder didn't walk back out to bat. He declared the innings instead, choosing to give his team enough time to bowl Zimbabwe out. The move surprised a lot of people, and Mulder later confirmed it was his own call. After the dust settled, Mulder shared that Brian Lara had reached out to him for a chat and revealed he instead wanted that Mulder should break his record. 'Now that things have settled a little bit, I've chatted a little bit to Brian Lara. He said to me I'm creating my own legacy and I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken and he wishes if I'm ever in that position again, I actually go and score more than what he had," Mulder told SuperSport. Chat With Lara Even with Lara encouraging him to go for the record next time, Mulder stood by his decision. "That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing and respecting the game is the most important part for me," he said. Mulder also told Shaun Pollock that he felt the record should stay with Lara. But not everyone was on board with that. Chris Gayle, who played alongside Lara for years, was clearly frustrated. 'If I could get the chance to get 400, I would get 400. That doesn't happen often. You don't know when you're going to get to a triple century again,' Gayle told TalkSport. Even though he decided not to chase the record, Mulder's 367 not out is now the highest individual score ever by a South African in Test cricket. It also ranks as the fifth-highest score in the history of the format.

Wiaan Mulder opens lid on Brian Lara's reaction to his call of not going for 400: ‘He said to me I'm creating my own…'

South Africa's stand-in captain, Wiaan Mulder, stood on the cusp of history at the lunch break on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe. He could have become just the second batter in the history of the game to score 400 in a single Test innings. He had the chance of surpassing Brian Lara to register the highest individual score in Test cricket. However, it was not to be as he chose to declare the innings when he was batting on 367 not out. Wiaan Mulder revealed that he spoke to Brian Lara, the former West Indies captain, who told him that he should have tried to break his record in Bulawayo.(AP) The choice to declare at 626/5 polarised several fans and cricket pundits alike. Chris Gayle and Ben Stokes have already said that Mulder will not get another opportunity to break the record and score 400. Days after the conclusion of the second Test against Zimbabwe, Wiaan Mulder has revealed that he spoke to Brian Lara, and the former West Indies captain told him that he should have tried to break the record in Bulawayo. 'Now that things have settled a little bit, I've chatted a little bit to Brian Lara. He said to me I'm creating my own legacy, and I should have gone for it. He said records are there to be broken and he wishes that if I'm ever in that position again, I actually go and score more than what he had,' Mulder told SuperSport. 'That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing and respecting the game is the most important part for me,' he added. Earlier, after declaring the innings, Mulder said that Brian Lara, a legend of the game, deserves to keep the record. He also stated that he spoke to the South African head coach and told him how he should declare the innings and let Lara keep the record. He is now in the fifth spot on the list of the highest individual scores in Test cricket. South Africa eventually went on to win the Test against Zimbabwe inside three days, by an innings and 236 runs. Gayle slams Mulder's call Earlier this week, former West Indies batter Chris Gayle slammed Wiaan Mulder's call of not going for 40, saying he "panicked" and "made an error" by declaring the innings and not chasing the "once in a lifetime opportunity". "If I could get the chance to get 400, I would get 400," Gayle said. "That doesn't happen often. You don't know when you're going to get to a triple-century again. Any time you get a chance like that, you try and make the best out of it," Gayle told TalkSport. "If you want to be a legend ... how are you going to become a legend? Records come with being a legend," he added.

Keith Andrews says he has no regrets about his criticism of Martin O'Neill

Keith Andrews says he has no regrets after Martin O'Neill called him out for comments he made during O'Neill's time as Ireland boss. Andrews was named the new Brentford boss last month after impressing as the set-piece coach at the Premier League side. But when O'Neill was asked on the radio to comment on the appointment, he brought up the criticism Andrews had levelled at him during his time as Ireland manager. O'Neill told TalkSport: "The irony is when I was manager of the Republic of Ireland he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine at the time. "He was really dead against me trying to use set-pieces to try to win games. "The irony is he becomes the set-piece coach. Really I say good luck to him. Brentford have decided, if it is the case, that he should get it. "I hope he does get it because then he will realise what management is all about." Andrews, 44, has refused to backtrack, though, on the comments he made about O'Neill's reign as Ireland. He said: 'My conscience would be very clean in terms of where that came from. 'Ireland was the only thing I supported as a kid growing up. I've already touched on it. "Very patriotic, very passionate, very proud to be sat here as an Irish Premier League manager. 'So it came from, again, going back to the way I work, I studied the team, gave my opinion, and invariably you can't please people all of the time. "And occasionally you do upset people, yeah, for sure.'

Naomi Osaka opens up about Nick Kyrgios's 'embarrassing' surprise for her at Wimbledon

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has opened up about how controversial Aussie Nick Kyrgios made an unexpected appearance in her coaching box at Wimbledon. Disrupted by knee and wrist injuries, Kyrgios will not be involved as a player at Wimbledon, making this the third consecutive year he has missed out. His last appearance on the court at Wimbledon came in 2022, when he lost the final to Novak Djokovic. Last year the 30-year-old was a part of the BBC 's punditry team, alongside Tim Henman and John McEnroe, but was not included this time around. The broadcaster's decision to include the Australian on the panel 12 months after he admitted to assaulting his former girlfriend Chiara Passari - but avoided a criminal conviction - was met with a fierce backlash from the public and MPs. Kyrgios was also overlooked by ESPN this year despite featuring on their panel at the Australian Open, and previously worked for the Tennis Channel and TNT Sports. However, the Aussie firebrand is at the event this year after securing a punditry role with TalkSport - and on day one of the tournament he watched Osaka in action on Court 18. Kyrgios, who is signed to Osaka's management group, is set to play mixed doubles with the Japanese star at the US Open in August. Following her 6-4 7-6 win over Talia Gibson, Osaka was asked about Kyrgios in her player's box and she admitted she had no idea he was there. 'Oh, he was there? I did not hear anything, OK,' she said. Osaka added: 'Oh, my God. I jokingly told someone, "Hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match". 'But I was joking, because I know we're two completely different players. Honestly, I would have loved to come to his matches, because I know he's pretty fun. 'Yeah, I think that's also a big part of why we're different is because I know he kind of tells his box what to do, and he probably would have noticed if I was in there. I kind of zone out most of the time. 'That's a little embarrassing that he was there. 'I guess it is cool that he was there.' Kyrgios has been tormented by a succession of injuries in the last two-and-a-half years and has only played six singles and three doubles matches since the start of 2023, winning one of each. But the prospect of the short-form event at the US Open with Osaka, and a star-studded cast, has persuaded him to enter along with a series of intriguing pairings. Only two of the 20 current top-10 male and female players have to date declined to put their names forward in a victory for the organisers' rebrand, the creation of which drew condemnation from regular doubles players including Australia's Ellen Perez. Men's No.1 Jannik Sinner has paired with American women's world No.9 Emma Navarro and men's No.2 Carlos Alcaraz with former US Open winner Emma Raducanu. Women's No.1 Aryna Sabalenka has linked up with men's No.19 Grigor Dimitrov. Men's No.9 Holger Rune and women's No.2 Coco Gauff are the current top-10 players not to have entered so far, nor have Australian No.1s Alex de Minaur and Daria Kasatkina - the entry window closes on July 28. However, de Minaur said he and his British fiancee Kate Boulter, currently world No.39, were planning on doing so. 'We're definitely going to be keen to try and play if they allow us to and if they want us to,' he said. 'If that's an option, then we'll definitely be up for it.' Sixteen teams have signed up with the top eight with the best combined singles ranking guaranteed a place along with eight wildcard entries.

Noel Gallagher announces Glastonbury plans ahead of Oasis tour comeback

Noel and Liam Gallagher will be back on stage next weekend but Noel was asked by TalkSport about his Glastonbury plans Noel Gallagher says Oasis have been given the weekend off - and are sounding 'huge' ahead of their comeback on Friday night. The Manchester band, led by Noel and brother Liam Gallagher, will play their first gig in 16 years at Cardiff's Principality stadium. ‌ Ahead of the show, Noel said: 'We finished rehearsing last Tuesday. We've got a few days off now and it's sounding huge, so we're all, well this is it, there's no going back now. It's good.' ‌ Speaking to TalkSport he was asked if he would be at Glastonbury, and Noel joked: 'I might have a look at it on the iPlayer, yeah, but everyone was saying 'are you coming?' I was like, 'I think it's probably best if I sit it out this year as I've got something going on next weekend.'' On Rod Stewart's Legends slot at the festival, he said: 'Big rod, the cup of tea slot, two in the afternoon, good lad, he'd be good, him and Ronnie Wood.' Rod Stewart will play Glastonbury festival on Sunday afternoon with Olivia Rodrigo then headlining the Pyramid stage later the same day. Noel and Liam will walk on stage for the first time together in public, since the band split nearly two decades ago, on July 4 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. On X, formerly twitter, Liam was asked on Friday if the roof of the stadium would be open or closed for the gigs. Liam replied: 'It'll be coming off either way.' There will also be dates in Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin as part of the tour. The support will come several acts including Liverpool band Cast. ‌ Last week Noel and Liam Gallagher posed up together for the first time since the Oasis global tour was announced. The brothers were pictured as part of an Adidas promotional campaign which launched in an advert on Channel 4. Liam and Noel have only been photographed together once in the last two decades in August last year, when they confirmed the reunion tour with a black and white shot which made headlines around the world. Oasis split following a backstage bust-up between the Gallaghers at Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009. But thankfully the brothers have now made up and it is believed Liam made the first move to patch things up. On X Liam said last year: "I called him but don't tell anyone as I don't want folk thinking I'm a soft lad and stuffs keep it between me n you cheers x." The reply laced with humour was typical of Liam's responses on social media.
