Aaliyah Charts Her First New Top 10 Hit In More Than 20 Years

It's been almost a quarter-century since Aaliyah passed away tragically at the age of 22 in an airplane crash. The R&B singer rose to prominence before the new millennium, and her career was seemingly just getting started when she passed away. Decades after her loss, Aaliyah's legacy remains a powerful one, and her estate has carefully doled out a handful of posthumous tracks in the past few years – tunes which have become clear successes on a handful of Billboard's genre-specific lists. This frame, the late superstar even manages to score a new proper smash, her first in many years. 'Gone' Rises Into the Top 10 R&B musician Tank joined Aaliyah on'Gone,' which dropped in May, and the tune reached a number of radio rosters in America upon its promotion. This week, the two genre favorites push 'Gone' from No. 11 to No. 7 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart, and the track cracks the top 10 for the first time on the list of the most successful songs on R&B stations across the United States that cater to a more mature audience. Aaliyah's Fourth Top 10 Smash As 'Gone' ascends, Aaliyah claims her fourth top 10 hit on the Adult R&B Airplay chart, and her second posthumous win. The new collaboration joins 'At Your Best (You Are Love),' 'Back & Forth,' and 'I Care 4 U,' which peaked at Nos. 4, 6, and 8, respectively. Two Decades Since Aaliyah's Last New Top 10 It's been more than 20 years since Aaliyah scored a new top 10 on the Adult R&B Airplay ranking. 'I Care 4 U' reached the highest tier in late 2002, more than a year after her death. Both 'At Your Best (You Are Love)' and 'Back & Forth' found their way into the uppermost region more than 30 years ago in 1994. Tank's Sixteenth Top 10 Hit Tank has now scored four times as many top 10s on the Adult R&B Airplay chart as his collaboration partner. That roundup includes nine No. 1s out of the 27 tracks he's pushed to the roster throughout his lengthy career. 'Gone' Holds on one Billboard Chart and Climbs on Another As 'Gone' hits the top 10 on the Adult R&B Airplay list, the duet holds on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. 'Gone' is steady at No. 28, which remains its best showing on the similarly-composed radio tally. Aaliyah's Posthumous Album Unstoppable 'Gone' is the second single taken from Aaliyah's upcoming posthumous album, which is reportedly titled Unstoppable. There have been many delays that have kept the set from the public, and neither tune pushed from the project has performed very well. In 2021, 'Poison,' which also credits The Weeknd, was also unleashed, but it too failed to make much of a commercial impact in the U.S.

Karnataka HC declines to quash notice insub judice land grabbing case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has refused to quash a show-cause notice issued to five people under the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority Act, 2014, over alleged encroachment of land near Vibhuthipura tank in KR Pura, east Bengaluru. Dismissing petitions filed by GV Manjunath and others, Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum said, "Although the petitioners contended that the Karnataka Land Grabbing Prohibition Act, 2011, alone governs the dispute and that proceedings under any other statute are barred as the matter is sub judice before the Special Court, such an interpretation does not hold merit…" The show-cause notice, dated Nov 29, 2024, was issued by the prescribed officer, tank and eviction execution engineer of BBMP, following a complaint lodged by the tahsildar. The complaint also led to Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force police registering a case under Sections 192A and 192B of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act. Their main grievance was that the matter is already pending before a special court under the 2011 Act, making parallel proceedings under the 2014 Act unsustainable. The court held that the prescribed officer could independently inquire into the alleged encroachment, and if established after hearing the petitioners, order their summary eviction in accordance with the 2014 Act. The petitions were accordingly dismissed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). US tariff shock: Gujarat's diamond hubs suffer as export orders dry; 1 lakh jobs gone

AI image Nearly 100,000 diamond cutting and polishing workers in Gujarat's Saurashtra region have lost their jobs since the United States imposed a 10% baseline tariff in April, according to Gujarat's Diamond Workers Union. According to ET, the union's vice-president, Bhavesh Tank, said that the pace of layoffs accelerated over the past 10 days, when the tariff was first raised to 25% and then doubled to 50%. Most of the job losses have been in small units in Bhavnagar, Amreli and Junagadh, which typically take up job work from larger companies for cutting and polishing rough diamonds. Many export orders from US buyers have been either delayed or cancelled. 'The units spread over Saurashtra, Junagadh, Bhavnagar and Amreli employ 300,000–400,000 people. Business was deteriorating in these places as US and China offtake of diamonds was slow. But the biggest blow came from the US tariff announced in April, which created an uncertainty in the diamond trade. Since then, cutting and polishing work has dried up and workers were shown the door,' Tank said. He added that affected workers earn around Rs 15,000– Rs 20,000 a month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 30 Facts That Might Surprise You Culture & History Undo While large companies have stayed silent on the scale of layoffs for fear of backlash, industry members say some displaced workers are finding employment in the lab-grown diamond (LGD) sector. However, concerns remain that if LGDs are also hit by the 50% tariff, the employment impact could be severe. 'The US is the major market for LGDs,' warned Jayantibhai Savalia, chairman (Gujarat region) of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), as quoted by ET. Dinesh Lakhani, group director of Rs 17,000-crore Kiran Gems, one of India's leading diamond exporters, said that in the short term, higher tariffs could mean reduced production, temporary layoffs or shorter shifts. 'If order volumes decline significantly, we may be forced to cut jobs to manage costs,' he said. India is the world's largest exporter of diamonds, supplying to major markets including the US and China, and cutting and polishing around nine out of every ten diamonds globally. In FY25, India exported gems and jewellery worth $10 billion to the US, led by cut and polished diamonds and diamond jewellery. Industry representatives have urged the government to speed up bilateral trade agreement talks with Washington to address the tariff gap, and have also sought higher export incentives, interest subsidies and quicker goods and services tax refunds. Arvind Gupta, MD at Gallant Jewellery, whose exports to the US account for over a quarter of its sales, said the sharp price increase due to the tariffs will 'significantly affect trade volumes, compress margins, and potentially displace thousands of jobs.' For now, the brunt of the layoffs is being felt in smaller towns rather than in Surat, the diamond hub employing over 800,000 people. Vijay Kumar Mangukiya, MD at Surat-based Dhani Jewels, said, 'US buyers are talking to us. They are thinking whether to take the diamonds from India and manufacture the jewellery in Vietnam and Thailand, as the US tariff is less in these countries. If nothing can be worked out, only then will the units be forced to take some drastic steps.' Joe and Donell Jones to headline rescheduled Ndlala Mall grand opening

JOHANNEBSURG - The planned grand opening of Pretoria's Ndlala Mall has faced several shake-ups in recent weeks including a cancellation by headliner Tank which led to the event being postponed. However, Tank's withdrawal seems to have paved the way for a new lineup, with R&B heavyweight Joe staying in South Africa to perform and platinum-selling artist Donell Jones joining the bill for the August 23 relaunch. Following his performance at the Women's Day concert this past weekend, Joe Thomas revealed on social media that he will be remaining in the country. 'South Africa, I am staying to support my friend Thami Ndlala, and I have a surprise for you,' Thomas said.
