Klang students train 300 hours for Merdeka human graphic performance
KLANG: A total of 2,000 students from 50 schools across Selangor have dedicated nearly 300 hours to perfect their human graphic performance for the upcoming National Day celebration. The event will take place at Dataran Putrajaya on August 31, showcasing a blend of choreography and choir performances. Chief Coach Ahmad Hafiz Awaludin revealed that participants were selected in May, with training commencing in July to align with this year's theme, 'Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni'. Initial training was conducted at individual schools using the Training of Trainers (ToT) concept before combined rehearsals began in early August. Students trained eight hours daily from Monday to Thursday over two months to ensure flawless execution. 'The training period is longer compared to previous years, as the human graphic performance will be complemented by a choir performance,' Ahmad Hafiz told Bernama during a session at KSL Esplanade Hotel. He emphasised the need for extra preparation time to integrate both elements seamlessly. The rigorous training has also prepared students for unpredictable weather, as the performance will be held on an open-air stage. Ahmad Hafiz noted that preparations are now 80 per cent complete, with the remaining time focused on refining movements and choreography. This year's performance will feature dynamic routines set to 12 songs, including a medley of 'Wau Bulan', 'Bapak Mek Datang', 'Dia Datang', and 'Sayang Kinabalu'. The human graphic team will also accompany Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza for the theme song performance. - Bernama

Inmate secures hotel job after prison rehab programme
KOTA KINABALU: The demands of her job led her to seek dangerous ways to stay awake -- but now she's choosing a fresh start . Siti (not her real name), a 45-year-old salesperson from Tawau, once relied on methamphetamine to power through long-distance work trips across Sabah. Caffeine, she said, was never enough. "Because I wanted to earn more, I always had to drive alone to remote places. "A friend suggested something stronger -- but I didn't expect that meth would ruin my life, even if it gave 50 times the energy of an energy drink. Now, the mother to a 20-year-old has a stern warning: "Don't take drugs, stick to your coffee (or other alternatives)." Siti spoke during the closing ceremony of a 18-day hotel operations course for 32 inmates, where she was among three offered employment. Since her first use in late 2022, the drug had changed her — making her more hot-tempered and often feeling drained. Siti, who used to sell tyres and gas safety equipment, added that quitting was not easy and had led to her being arrested twice in 2023 and 2024. "I'm due for release in October 2027. Today, I'm glad to be offered a housekeeping job at a hotel. "Tasks like bed-making aren't easy — they must be done in under 20 minutes — but I'm grateful for this second chance." The programme, which covered housekeeping, kitchen, and stewarding operations, was delivered aligned with hotel industry standards. It involved collaboration with a hotel and certified facilitators who had undergone a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme last February. The course's closing ceremony was officiated by Deputy Prisons Commissioner Tey Hock Soon. Tey said the initiative reflects the department's shift beyond punishment — focusing instead on education and second chances. "We want inmates to leave the correctional system not only free from prison walls but also from the shackles of societal stigma and prejudice," he said.
