Helldivers 2 players ask for better UI with in-game info but joke it "would break 50% of the game," director says "that's mean... and also sadly true" but "we are working on an improved system"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Fun though it is, protecting Super Earth in Helldivers 2 often isn't helped by the UI. Less than graceful and not always intuitive, it's been a bugbear within the multiplayer shooter's community since it came out back in early 2024. In discussing their hopes for an improved system, players commented that doing so would cause a lot of problems elsewhere within the game's structure. Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2 and CCO of Arrowhead Games Studio, responded to this jab on Reddit, offering agreement and teasing improvements in the pipeline. "Hey! That's mean... and also sadly true. Our UI system is very cumbersome to develop - but we are working on an improved system that will allow us to build in-game UI faster," Pilestedt comments. "Also, we made a decision early to focus on Discord as the primary platform for the community. (As it's what we use internally for playtests and for other games)." The official Helldivers 2 Discord server is a pillar of the playerbase, where people socialize online together and receive updates from the development team. Polls on prospective changes and such are voted on through the server, and players would like more in-game functionality for these features, to make sure as many can vote as possible. Though such a thing may sound simple enough, game development is rarely so simple. As Pilestedt states, editing the UI in any way is currently a difficult proposition. But, from the sounds of things, Arrowhead is working on how to make this easier for everyone, potentially lowering the gap between the players and Discord users in the process. Discord has been an invaluable tool for Helldivers 2's community, especially as the audience scaled up dramatically soon after release. But clearly the overall reliance is something that needs altering, and Arrowhead's working on ways to do that. Watch this space. Google Contacts' new Material 3 Expressive look is rolling out, here's what's different
Adamya Sharma / Android Authority TL;DR Google is rolling out the Material 3 Expressive redesign to its Contacts app with v4.61.27. The redesign features prominent card-like UI across tabs like Highlights and Organize, as well as Search and Contact Details pages. Settings and New Contact pages remain unchanged for now, but are expected to follow soon. Material 3 Expressive is the flavor of the season, and Google is trying to bring the new design to all of its apps ahead of the Android 16 QPR1 rollout to Pixels in September. Following on the heels of the Google Phone app getting its dose of Material 3 Expressive, Google is now rolling out the Material 3 Expressive refresh for the Contacts app. With Google Contacts app v4.61.27, users can now enjoy the expressive UI across the app. This change is gradually rolling out to users, and you don't need to sign up for the beta as it is coming through the stable branch. Minister kicks off public discussion on Indonesia's controversial new history books
July 29, 2025 JAKARTA – Culture Minister Fadli Zon has reassured the public that the forthcoming history books 'are not hiding anything' as he launched a public campaign on the project despite concerns past human rights abuses may be whitewashed. Fadli held the first round of discussion on Friday at the University of Indonesia's (UI) main campus in Depok, West Java, and said in his remarks there that the new history books were aimed at taking an 'Indonesia-centric' perspective in updating the country's history. 'This forum is a kickoff for public discussions to show that we are not hiding anything in our history. We can debate it, but we cannot simply leave our history unwritten,' he said in the livestream event. Deflecting concerns of being a rushed project, the minister said the ongoing efforts to rewrite the country's history is '26 years too late'. He noted that the last state-sanctioned revision took place at the start of the Reform era in 1999. The upcoming 10-volume publication will include everything from the latest archaeological findings on early civilizations in the archipelago up to the end of former president Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's second term in October of last year. The project involves 112 historians from 34 state universities across Indonesia, whom Fadli described as the 'maestros' of their respective fields. 'History cannot be written carelessly. If it is written by an activist, the result will be different. If it is written by a politician, it will also reflect differing political interests. That is why history must be written by qualified historians,' he said. The project has come under fire from activists and independent historians, who fear that the government might be looking to take a revisionist approach by emphasizing only positive legacies of past presidents, including Soeharto, whose authoritarian rule was marked by widespread human rights abuses and systemic corruption. Fadli has also come under heavy criticism for his repeated dismissal of the mass rapes that took place during the May 1998 riots. While Fadli did not provide a specific publication timeline, he said he hoped the books would serve as a 'gift' for the nation's 80th Independence Day on Aug. 17. Restu Gunawan, director general for the protection of culture and tradition at the Culture Ministry, said that, in addition to the event at UI, three more discussions are set to follow in the coming weeks in Lambung Mangkurat University in South Kalimantan, followed by Padang State University in West Sumatra and at Makassar State University in South Sulawesi. 'The books are currently in the editing stage by the volume editors. Hopefully, public input from these forums can help fill in any remaining gaps before it moves on to the general editor for final refinement,' Restu said.
