Stunned silence at Goodwood as 150-1 no-hoper packemaker Qirat pulls off one of the biggest upsets ever

THERE was a stunned silence at Goodwood as 150-1 Qirat saw off 1-3 Field Of Gold to win the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Goodwood tips: Newsboy's picks and 1-2-3 for every race on Wednesday on ITV

The feature Sussex Stakes, the Molecomb Stakes and the Oak Tree Stakes are all covered in Newsboy's unmissable column on day two of Glorious Goodwood Goodwood hosts its signature race on Wednesday when the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes takes place at one of the most picturesque racing settings in the world. The Qatar Goodwood Festival, also known as Glorious Goodwood, is one of the highlights of the summer when the crowds come out to the Sussex venue in the hope of fine racing and fine weather. ‌ Day two features the return of Field Of Gold, the year's top three-year-old miler, in the Sussex, and two Group 3 races, the HKJC World Pool Oak Tree and Molecomb Stakes. ‌ Newsboy, aka David Yates, will be providing daily and detailed guides on every race. ‌ 1.20 Coral Pipped At The Post Winners Handicap SUDU rattled the handicapper's cage with a runaway Epsom win - but may still find himself in credit with the British Horseracing Authority number cruncher. Roger Varian gave the son of Teofilo his first three starts over a mile and Sudu duly showed ability in maiden and novice-stakes company at Newbury, Newcastle and Southwell, without suggesting he is out of the ordinary. But a gelding operation, a step up to a mile and a half and a switch to the handicap sphere have combined to show my selection in a different - and better - light. Two starts ago, Sudu took on 11 opponents at Newbury and was persistently denied daylight before running on to take fourth to Circus Of Rome. ‌ And he showed what he could do with a clear run at Epsom at the start of this month, powering away for a seven-length supremacy from Navid over the Derby course and distance. The assessor was never going to take that performance lying down and Silvestre de Sousa's partner must race from an 11lb higher mark of 86 today. But it could have been worse - the Epsom runner-up has since gone one better and Sudu will compete from 88 in the future. Sing Us A Song is another with more to offer at this distance and is feared most, ahead of Kurakka and Jupiter Ammon. ‌ 1.55 HKJC World Pool Oaks Tree Stakes ‌ SILVER GHOST is fancied to outrun her odds despite taking a step up in class. Her official rating of 95 gives the Emma Lavelle-saddled three-year-old plenty to find as she locks horns with Group 3 opposition for the very first time. But forgive a below-par effort at Royal Ascot last month and Phoenix Of Spain's daughter has the profile of an improving filly capable of making her mark outside the handicap realm. Silver Ghost drew a blank on the first six outings of her career before coming good in a seven-furlong handicap on Newmarket's 2,000 Guineas undercard in May. ‌ Put up 6lb for that win, my selection followed up over this afternoon's course and distance three weeks later, sweeping through from the back of the 14-runner line-up under Marco Ghiani - Tom Marquand is at the controls today - to account for Miss Nightfall by two and a half lengths. Things didn't work out going up to a mile for the Sandringham Fillies' Handicap as the grey returned ninth of 25 behind Never Let Go. But it's early days to be writing her off and, back at a track where she produced a career best, Silver Ghost can reward each-way support - at the least. Last year's 'winner' Jabaara, placed second by the stewards for interference, is in the mix, along with Cloud Cover and Tabiti. ‌ NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SILVER GHOST, 2 JABAARA, 3 TABITI 2.30 HKJC World Pool Molecomb Stakes ‌ LADY IMAN rates a worthy favourite to take her career tally to four wins from five visits to the track. It's fair to assume Starman's daughter came to hand early for trainer Ger Lyons - she went off a well-backed 4-6 favourite for her debut in a five-furlong maiden at Dundalk on March 28. Lady Iman didn't disappoint, scoring by a comfortable three and a half lengths to earn a step up to Listed level at the Curragh, where she proved a length and a quarter too strong for subsequent Queen Mary Stakes heroine True Love, at the beginning of May. ‌ Group 3 company was the next logical move and my selection defended her unbeaten record by holding Green Sense by three-quarters of a length over six furlongs at Naas 13 days later. The winning run came to an end in the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes over the same distance back at the Curragh last time as Lady Iman went under by two lengths to Beautify. The evidence of that defeat is that coming back to five furlongs is the right policy and, with Ryan Moore standing in for the suspended Colin Keane, a 3lb penalty for the Naas success may not stop Lady Iman from returning to winning ways. Ameeq, Dickensian and Argentine Tango are all speedy juveniles who have podium claims. ‌ NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 LADY IMAN, 2 AMEEQ, 3 ARGENTINE TANGO 3.05 Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes ‌ FIELD OF GOLD is an outstanding miler and it will rank as a major shock if the three-year-old's first clash with his seniors ends in defeat. There was much promise in the John and Thady Gosden trainee's juvenile campaign - Field Of Gold stepped forward from a maiden score at Newmarket in July 2024 to land Sandown Park's Group 3 Solario Stakes the following month before a fourth to Camille Pissarro in the top-level Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp in October. A three-and-a-half-length comeback win in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April saw the grey son of Kingman sent off the 15-8 favourite for the 2,000 Guineas but, like his sire 11 years earlier, Field Of Gold met with an agonising reverse. ‌ That half-length beating by Ruling Court cost Kieran Shoemark his job as the Clarehaven stable jockey, and Colin Keane enjoyed an armchair ride when Field Of Gold humbled Cosmic Year by three and three-quarter lengths for the Irish version at the Curragh three weeks on. My selection then put up one of the performances of a vintage Royal Ascot as he scorched to victory from Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Henri Matisse in the St James's Palace Stakes. That three-and-a-half-length supremacy established Field Of Gold, on whom William Buick takes over from the suspended Keane, as a genuine star and he's confidently expected to emulate his father by supplementing his Curragh and Ascot triumphs with success in the Qatar Goodwood Festival's feature race. ‌ Rosallion lost out by a nose to Docklands in Royal Ascot's opening Queen Anne Stakes - Carl Spackler was back in sixth - but is most likely to profit should the market leader fail to come up to expectations. Rain-softened ground could have been to blame when William Haggas's daughter of Sea The Stars failed to fire at Doncaster last October - Wonder Star went off the 3-1 second favourite in a field of eight for her debut but beat just two rivals home behind Janey Mackers. ‌ However, upped from a mile to 10 furlongs and on better terrain, she proved a different proposition at Ascot in May, justifying 6-4 favouritism by a comfortable three lengths from Spirited Style. Eight days later, Wonder Star's sights were raised to Listed level for the Fillies' Trial at Newbury, but things didn't go to plan as she over-raced during the early stages and beat a retreat through the final quarter mile en route to an eighth-of-10 finish behind Qilin Queen. There is still the scope for progress, however, on her fourth career start and an opening British Horseracing Authority mark of 82 looks within range. ‌ In an open contest, Model Yuko should appreciate the chance to tackle a mile and a quarter and warrants a second look, as do Quebella and Music Star. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 WONDER STAR, 2 MODEL YUKO, 3 QUEBELLA ‌ 4.20 British Stallion Studs EBF Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes ZELAINA has been found a gilt-edged opportunity to double her career tally. The daughter of Mehmas obviously impressed when put through her paces before the Goffs UK Breeze Up Sale at Doncaster in April - she emerged as the top lot after going under the hammer for £650,000. ‌ Put into training with Karl Burke by Wathnan Racing, Zelaina led the market at even-money for a five-furlong fillies' maiden at Nottingham at the start of June, and hit the ground running with a two-and-three-quarter-length success from Secret Oath. That win triggered a step up to Group 2 level for Royal Ascot's Queen Mary Stakes, with James Doyle's partner going off the 5-1 second choice in a 23-strong line-up. On paper, an eighth placing is underwhelming, but Zelaina showed plenty of pace to lead the field before fading once headed inside the final furlong. ‌ With that in mind, a speed-favouring five furlongs at Goodwood looks ideal and stepping down from Pattern company to a conditions event makes for a less demanding assignment. Spicy Marg and Revival Power, also dropping in grade, are taken to fight it out with Beverley debut scorer Temple Of Athena for the minor medals. ‌ 4.55 World Pool Bet With the Tote Handicap LEADMAN evidently hasn't been an easy horse to get to the track, but there's no doubting what's under the bonnet. Now five years old, the son of Kingman has had just 10 career starts, landing one from seven when in the care of Andrew Balding. ‌ Switched to David O'Meara for 2025, Leadman improved on in-the-frame efforts at over the final seven furlongs of Newmarket's Rowley Mile in May for a half-length handicap score from Up The Pace over the same trip on the July Course 19 days ago. Third home Two Tribes gave the form a significant boost at Ascot on Saturday, so a 6lb rise in the weights looks manageable. In a race of myriad possible outcomes, Blue Prince, Mr Chaplin and Native Warrior are names worth throwing into the melting pot.

John Gosden gives the lowdown on his Glorious Goodwood runners including Field Of Gold

Star miler Field Of Gold is one of six horses declared for the £1 million Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday in which he will meet older horses for the first time including Rosallion John Gosden says Field Of Gold is 'in great order' ahead of his first big race showdown against older horses. The three-year-old has emerged as the top miler of his generation after sparkling wins in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. ‌ Next he must prove himself against his elders who he meets for the first time in Wednesday's £1 million Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, one of the highlights of five-day Glorious Goodwood Festival.. ‌ The Group 1 race has attracted a six-strong line-up including top older milers Docklands and Rosallion, first and second in the Queen Anne Stakes, and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Henri Matisse. Field Of Gold will be the stand out horse of a strong team which will represent father and son training duo John and Thady Gosden. ‌ Gosden Snr has shared his thoughts on his leading challengers over the first two days. TUESDAY 2.30 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes - Audience 'He hasn't quite repeated last year's winning form yet. We sent him down to Dubai, which might not have been the smartest move in the world, running him over six [furlongs]. He's well in himself and happy. He enjoys the track, and if he gets a reasonable draw, I think he'll run a big race again.' 3.05 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup - Sweet William 'He's been in very good form. He broke well; he was up in what was a tough race [Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup]. In the end, it was a little too far for him [2m 4f]. He's a two-mile to two-and-a-quarter-mile horse, the two and a half was just a little bit too far for him, but he ran a brave race. He's in very good form. Rab Havlin rides him every day, he's very pleased with him. And obviously, he knows Goodwood well, so back we go again. We hope he'll run a huge race; I assume Illinois is the favourite if he comes, but the idiosyncrasies of the track amuse Sweet William, he rather likes it.' French Master 'I think the step up in trip will be within his range. The two miles of Goodwood is a little up and down, with twists and turns. I think he's a horse who will rise to the occasion. He won in good style, but he's going from a handicap in a rating band to a completely open Group 1. We're hopeful he'll run a good race. He did a little breeze with Sweet William. There wasn't much between them, nicely on the bridle, looking after each other. Sweet William was a neck up, actually. We're very much looking forward to running him and seeing the jump in class. The great thing is, if he doesn't handle it, we can regroup on it.' WEDNESDAY 3.05 Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes - Field Of Gold 'He's been a grand horse to train; he's done nothing but thrive this year. We've been pleased with his progress all the way through. The Sussex is a different test of a horse. If you've ever walked the track, it's quite a surprise, it runs down into a dip, swings up and around. You don't want too big a field and get a high draw because you are literally down the hill looking at the horses getting the shortest run round up the hill, so the draw is a big factor there if you get a large field. The horse is athletic, he's got great balance, and hopefully he'll handle the track well. It's very different to the round mile of Ascot or the Curragh, that's for sure. He's in great order, and we're looking forward to running him. It's very much the obvious race to go to for him. He does have that great turn of foot, and let's hope we get a clear run, and he can produce it on the day.'

William Buick picks up plum ride on Field Of Gold at Goodwood

William Buick will ride Field Of Gold in next week's Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Narrowly beaten in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket when partnered by Kieran Shoemark, John and Thady Gosden's three-year-old has made no mistake in two subsequent starts under Juddmonte's retained rider Colin Keane, emulating his sire Kingman with brilliant victories in both the Irish Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. With Keane currently serving a suspension after contravening the whip rules, connections needed to secure a new pilot for Field Of Gold's next appearance – and having revealed Buick was "on the list" of potential riders two weeks ago, he has now been confirmed for the high-profile mount. Barry Mahon, Juddmonte's European racing manager, said: "I think John and Thady were to talk to William yesterday to confirm his availability and it sounds like they've done that and he's free to ride him, so I'd say that's the plan. "In fairness, until you get to within a week of the event you don't know what other trainers and jockeys are doing, but obviously William has been able to commit now which is good. "He's a top-class rider and rode a Group One winner for us last October on board Kalpana, so it's good to have him on board." Field Of Gold is set to head a quality Juddmonte team bound for the Sussex Downs, with fellow three-year-olds Cosmic Year and Jonquil also poised for action. The Harry Charlton-trained Cosmic Year was second to Field Of Gold in the Irish 2,000 Guineas before failing to fire in the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville, while Andrew Balding's Greenham Stakes winner Jonquil will step back up in trip after finding the six furlongs of the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot too sharp. Field Of Gold's Lockinge-winning stablemate Lead Artist meanwhile holds a Sussex Stakes entry, but appears unlikely to be on the Goodwood squad. "I'd say Cosmic Year will run in the Thoroughbred Stakes, the Group Three over a mile, at the minute that's the plan," Mahon added. "Jonquil worked nicely this morning and he's a probable to run in the Lennox over seven (furlongs).
