Delta flight thrown into chaos as stowaway pigeons storm cabin at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport

Chaotic footage shows the frantic moment a pigeon burst onto a Delta Airlines plane Saturday as passengers tried to capture the rogue bird. A passenger attempted to grab the fluttering ball of feathers with an article of clothing as other flyers screamed in the background, according to video obtained by news outlets. The pigeon, which was eventually captured, was one of two that emerged on the Wisconsin-bound plane at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, WCCO News reported. 'The pilot gets on and says, 'Ladies and gentlemen, we have a wildlife situation on the plane,'' passenger Tom Caw told the outlet. The other feathering stow-away was walking under the seat until a Delta baggage handler picked it up. The two pigeons led to a brief delay Saturday night. Anoka Social District brings back "sip and stroll" for 3rd summer in a row

It's May, it's spring, it's patio season, and now it's also time to "sip and stroll" at Anoka's Social District. For the third straight summer, the city's downtown will allow visitors to grab their alcoholic beverages to go and enjoy them in select other businesses and even in Riverfront Memorial Park. "The Anoka Social District has been a great success bringing in new faces to see our city and to experience all we have to offer," Mayor Erik Skogquist said. "I couldn't be happier with how the City of Anoka and all of our downtown businesses have worked towards a common goal, and look forward to more creative partnerships to enhance the vibrancy and social interactions that make Anoka unique." First piloted for a month in 2023, the district went the whole season last year and will be open now daily thru October 5th. There are eight participating bars and restaurants where patrons can purchase drinks in the specially marked "Social District" cups: 10K Brewing, 201 Tavern - Beer Garden & Grill & Speakeasy, Ambi Wine Bar, Casa Rio, Ibiza West, MaGillycuddy's, The Wheelhouse, and Serums Good Time Emporium. The Anoka Lions Club also has a license and will sell drinks during the Rockin' on the Rum Concerts series at the park. Davis Pearson, who owns TimeFrames antique store, told WCCO News he's been pleasantly surprised by the program's success. "Mainly I was worried about people coming in hammered," he quipped. "I haven't had any issues at all. People like to grab a drink, then go to shops, come in here or other stores, and search around for toys and music they used to have." Pearson added that the district has even proven to be a boon for his business. "You can say that once people started drinking and they get loosened up they're more willing to dip into their pocket." Lawmakers consider allowing districts across Minnesota Anoka remains the only city in Minnesota to have an social district, and was specially chosen by lawmakers to be its pilot in the 2022 Omnibus Liquor Bill. The Legislature, however, has since given the green light to both Shakopee and Stillwater to consider opening their own districts, but not until at least this coming fall. There is also momentum in Saint Paul to pass a bill that would expand the potential for social districts to all municipailities across the state. "It's proven in Anoka that it's not just about beer. It's about community," Sen. Aric Putnam (DFL-St. Cloud) explained to WCCO News. "We have a lot of downtowns that are struggling and this is a reason to bring people down in a central space where they can share in each other's company, in music, and art, and in beer. It really has tremendous potential for the whole state.

Burnsville Police Department to travel to Washington D.C. as part of National Police Week, thanks to tulip fundraiser

Market 101 and Garden Center is roughly 50 miles from Burnsville, but managers say the 2024 shooting death of three first responders is a tragedy that strikes the heart. "I have a couple of police officers in my family, one of them retired in Colorado and the other is in Lakeville," manager Pat Beruske told WCCO News. "When this happened last year, I was concerned for his welfare." Burnsville police officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, along with firefighter paramedic Adam Finseth, were shot and killed in February 2024 . A few months later, Market 101 raised roughly $76,000 to benefit the grieving families through a special tulip sale. This year, the sale returned, and the store this week handed over a $12,000 check to help send those families — and the entire Burnsville Police Department — to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week. "It's finishing the circle," Beruske explained. "We helped them in their time of need, the tragedy, last year. Now it's a full circle moment. We're going to give them money to go to Maryland and Washington to try to heal, and get their closure." Elmstrand and Ruge are two among 345 fallen police officers who will be memorialized this year in D.C. next month; other Minnesota officers being remembered include Jesse Branch, of Red Lake Nation Police ; National Park Service Ranger Kevin Grossheim ; and Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell . Kevin Rofidal, a retired Edina police sergeant who now sits on the Fraternal Order of Police Foundation board, told WCCO News the trip to D.C. will be a full itinerary that includes much more than a memorial service and vigil. "The second piece of it is there is some therapeutics and being around families and other survivors that have experienced something similar," he added. "We've learned a lot. We've learned a lot because of suicides in police, with survivors and PTSD, and it's finally being addressed." There are several ongoing fundraisers for Burnsville , as Rofidal says the cost to send its 166-member delegation will cost roughly $75,000. The Minneapolis Police Department and its supporters are also raising money to send a large delegation .
