Iraqi MPs urge government to pressure Turkiye over water shortage
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Monday, the Iraqi Parliament's Agriculture, Water, and Marshes Committee called on the federal government to take urgent action against Turkiye for failing to honor its agreement to release Iraq's designated share of water, amid worsening water scarcity across the country. Committee member Thaer Mukhayef told Shafaq News Agency that Turkiye's ongoing policy of restricting water flows to Iraq is 'inflicting severe consequences and could soon result in critical shortages of drinking water.' "While traveling through Babil province, I witnessed protesters setting tires ablaze in outrage over water cuts to their farms," Mukhayef said, adding that 'the land has gone dry, devastating livelihoods and dealing a heavy blow to the local economy." 'There is no alternative, the Prime Minister must go to Turkiye himself and resolve this crisis directly. The promises Turkiye made to Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Mashhadani were nothing but lies—none have materialized into meaningful action,' he stated. Mukhayef stressed that the Committee would continue to press through official channels to safeguard Iraq's water rights and push for a resolution to the crisis. Iraq has experienced a sharp decline in water levels in recent years, driven largely by upstream restrictions—particularly from Turkiye, which controls the flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers through extensive dam and reservoir networks. Although Turkiye has recently increased water discharges in partial response to diplomatic efforts, Baghdad continues to press for a lasting, equitable water-sharing agreement to secure Iraq's long-term water stability.

The pop phenom's steamy new collection kicks off with 'Dynamite' featuring Wizkid, which she had previously teased at a fan event along with a song titled 'Chanel,' which does not appear on the mixtape. On 'Mr. Media,' she takes aim at her critics. In May 2024, Tyla released her highly-anticipated self-titled debut LP, which followed the success of her 2023 smash hit 'Water.' A Rolling Stone review of the record praised Tyla's debut, and said the album 'shows she's up to the challenge; amapiano probably couldn't ask for a more effective ambassador.' Success left me feeling trapped, says Tyla
Tyla felt "trapped" following the success of Water. The 23-year-old singer released her chart-topping single in 2023, and Tyla admits that the success of the track changed her life. She told The Sun newspaper at a Q and A in London: "For a while, especially last year, I felt so trapped. "Like, 'Oh my word, I blew up and I just have to have everything right and everything has to be perfect now because the world is looking.' "It was kind of stressful for me." Tyla recently released We Wanna Party, her debut mixtape, and she relished the experience of being able to "experiment" with new sounds and ideas. She explained: "I wasn't planning on doing this. I was just making music at the beginning of the year. It was mainly for an album. "But as I got closer to summer, I was like, 'Hey the songs I was making were too good ... where are the summer songs? "We need some summer songs right now' and I am just too excited to hold on to them. I really just want people to hear it and party to it, and see how I've grown through the years and just see who I am now." Tyla actually thinks having "a little bit of arrogance" has helped her to navigate the stresses of the music industry. She said: "I just always knew I had something in me. "I just always had that kind of peace knowing that this is the life I'm gonna live. "I don't let anybody or anything limit me or put me in a box. I think I'm just confident. "A lot of people say arrogant, but I think everyone needs a little bit of arrogance, especially to make it in this industry and to make people believe in your music. "If you're not that proud and you don't believe in your stuff as strongly as you should, why would someone else?" Meanwhile, Tyla previously admitted that fame has robbed her of a normal life, meaning she can't go anywhere without security. The singer told British Vogue magazine: "Sometimes I even cry over it. I just miss being able to walk. Or sit in the park. Or go to Nando's."
