Review: ‘Jurassiq Parq' at Oasis is S.F.'s show of the summer, claws down

In 1993, 'Jurassic Park' roared and stomped summer blockbuster records to shreds. Today, if there's any justice in the world, the drag spoof 'Jurassiq Parq' will sashay and belt its way to the live performance equivalent. The core of D'Arcy Drollinger, OasisArts and Michael Phillis' unimprovable show, which I saw Friday, July 18, at Oasis, is a bone-deep understanding of its source material. Writer Phillis and director Jason Hoover bring electric wit to and contagious affection for the many, many quirks in Steven Spielberg's film about an island theme park with real live dinosaurs: The shirt of Jeff Goldblum (Marshall Forte) is unbuttoned a lot more than seems necessary, and when he's injured, he does spend a lot of time posing like a male model. The explanation of how Colonel Sanders Hammond (Vanilla Meringue) and Dr. BD Wong (Trixie Aballa) reincarnated dinosaurs from fossilized DNA (Edie Eve) is indeed a bit like intoning one word — 'Science!' — and sending tasseled pasties spiraling in opposite directions. The team devises one brilliant lo-fi solution after another, starting before the show with an electric fence cordoning off the VIP area and a giant cube dominating the stage with 'CAUTION' written on the sides' fabric; inevitably, those curtains must drop, and sexy velociraptors (Madeline Lambie, May Ramos and Ryan Patrick Welsh) must emerge to sing 'Bootylicious.' A couple lazily rotating foam tubes and a leafblower simulate a helicopter. When Dr. Laura Dern (Elenor Irene Paul) plunges her hand inside a hillock of dinosaur poo, the wet, thwack sound that designer Jerry Girad devises is so evocative you might think someone licked your ears. And ingeniously, even in a low-ceilinged club, a tyrannosaurus rex finds a way to tower. As characters vent their sexual frustrations with chef's-kiss retro tunes — Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game,' Aerosmith's 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing' — the singing is way, way better than you have any right to expect from performers humping their way onstage through a sweaty, throbbing crowd sloshing their neon drinks around. Tuneful, soulful, powerful, it puts to shame the vocals in many musical theater productions that take themselves more seriously. More Information Those same performers nail their caricatures. As Dr. Jeff Goldblum, Forte is all twitchy, breathy smarminess, his entreaties for someone, anyone, to listen to him talk about chaos theory liable to explode at any moment in a spontaneous ejaculation. As inept villain Wayne Nerdy, Snaxx is a whole bundle of live wires, fizzing in so many directions simultaneously that you really start to question any enterprise that would give him sole control of security systems. And as grandkids Lexxx and Timy, Barbie Bloodgloss and Kitty Litter create a double act so deliciously weird and fully embodied they could stand to the side and give a running commentary. When, not if, you go, re-watch the movie first, just so you can savor the full splendor of every punch line — a bathroom sequence, a goat cameo, why it was such a good idea to (almost totally) eliminate Sam Neill's nonentity character. Put team Phillis and Hoover in charge of more things. The city of San Francisco has a lot of problems, but 'Jurassiq Parq' makes you feel like you could solve more of them if we all just banded together with some sequin-clad dinosaurs to sing 'What's Up' by 4 Non Blondes.

Man accused of McGill ghetto murder references synchronicity, quantum physics during testimony

Montreal Crime By François Pelletier continued his very confusing testimony Thursday in the trial where he is accused of stabbing Romane Bonnier to death in the McGill Ghetto in front of several stunned witnesses more than three years ago. Pelletier, 39, is acting as his own lawyer in the case at the Montreal courthouse, where he is charged with first-degree murder. On Wednesday, he made an opening statement to the jury during which he bluntly admitted he killed the 24-year-old woman by stabbing her 26 times. After he delivered the opening statement, he was sworn in and began to testify in his own defence. Without the aid of a lawyer, he set off on what has been a very long monologue. No one is asking Pelletier questions and while he told the jury he wants to explain what happened to Bonnier before they decide his fate, his testimony has been full of asides about things like what songs he was listening to after Bonnier agreed to let him be her roommate and he became obsessed with her. 'Let's just say there are many layers to this reality we are living,' he told the jury at one point. He said he was listening to Radiohead's Creep, Chris Isaak's Wicked Game and a song called Sunspots by Nine Inch Nails. '(Sunspots) is a rather powerful song,' he said, Besides the songs, Pelletier referenced synchronicity and quantum physics and claimed both were involved in his attraction to Bonnier. He also made references to his mental health, which led prosecutor Marianna Ferrero to object twice. Superior Court Justice François Dadour sustained both of the objections, a sign that Pelletier is not supposed to refer to his mental health. On Wednesday, Pelletier told the jury he would have preferred that a psychiatric evaluation on his mental health had been part of the evidence. Ferrero later made another objection when she noted that Pelletier has used the word 'f--k' many times while testifying. The Crown's theory is that, during 2021, Bonnier placed an ad seeking a roommate to share the rent on an apartment she was already living in. Pelletier replied to the ad and Bonnier agreed to let him live with her. They had a brief relationship, but Bonnier eventually put an end to it. Pelletier was unable to accept the breakup and texted Bonnier frequently. The Crown alleges that on Oct. 19, 2021, he staked out her workplace, a store owned by her parents, and followed her after she left before he stabbed her to death. 'She was a sophisticated schemer,' Pelletier said Thursday morning while claiming, as he does often, that Bonnier sometimes dressed in a way to attract him. 'She was dressed to kill. She was dressed to kill me,' Pelletier said during another part of his testimony. 'She was wearing a red dress that I remember to this day.'

Watch ‘Euphoria' star Sydney Sweeney channel a mermaid after calling off her wedding

Sydney Sweeney appears to be livin' la vida single, Ariel style. Amid rumors that her spring wedding was called off (and not just delayed), the 'Euphoria' star posted a tastefully shot video in a pool. The clip sees the actress putting forth her best water ballet moves in a skimpy bikini set to Chris Isaak's classic song 'Wicked Game.' With the blue skies above and palm trees swaying in the background, we are betting Sweeney's at her Florida Keys mansion that she scooped up last summer for a cool $13.5 million. The 27 year old's legion of followers were totally feeling the post, with many throwing out superlatives like 'stunning,' 'beautiful' and 'divine.' Others, including Cosmopolitan magazine, were getting mermaid vibes. So are we supposed to read anything into the sensual, aquatic clip? Is 'The White Lotus' alum officially free from businessman fiancé Jonathan Davino? That remains to be seen. UsWeekly reports that the wedding, originally set for May in Chicago, has been called off, as the couple works through some things. 'Sydney and Jonathan have been having major issues but are not fully split,' a source recently told the outlet. 'Things are not great right now, but they aren't throwing in the towel yet.' People magazine adds that the in-demand Emmy nominee has decided to focus on all her upcoming work projects, including a biopic on boxer Christy Martin. Another notch on Sweeney's ever expanding resume: swimsuit model. Aussie swimwear brand Fae shared her pool video on its Instagram, informing shoppers that their famous model is wearing the hot combo of the Lumi top and Jones bottom. Total cost: $208. Beside all of her projects, we also have to wonder if there are other fish in the sea. One in particular. Sweeney was just seen with hunky 'Anything But You' costar Glen Powell, 36, at his sister's wedding in Dallas, Deux Moi reports. The 'close friends,' who were rumored to have had a fling while shooting their 2023 rom-com, looked 'real close.' If anyone spots Powell in the Florida Keys, please send us a DM immediately.
