Classic Rock Icon, 81, Has Exciting News For Fans

Classic Rock Icon, 81, Has Exciting News For Fans originally appeared on Parade. Roger Waters etched his name in the halls of rock history as a founding member of Pink Floyd. With concept albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, Pink Floyd delivered prog rock epics while weaving stories of alienation, greed, authoritarian governments and the pain of loss. Since embarking on a solo career in the mid-'80s, Waters has performed his original material as well as Pink Floyd classics. In recent years, he has dazzled fans worldwide with his immersive "This Is Not A Drill" tour. For those who haven't yet experienced it, Waters has good news. This Is Not A Drill—Live From Prague, both a new concert movie and live album, is on its way. The concert film captures his performance at the O2 Arena in the Czech Republic on May 25, 2023. The set included 20 classic Pink Floyd songs like "Comfortably Numb," "Money," "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2," "Us & Them," and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" – as well as selections of Waters' solo work. Waters also shared a video of him singing "Wish You Were Here," taken from the concert. Dave Gilmour originally sang the song from the album of the same name (an ode to Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett), but Waters' version is just as strong. This Is Not A Drill—Live From Prague begins a short theatrical run on July 23 (with tickets going on sale on June 12). The concert will also be released on August 1 as a 4-LP or 2-CD set (as well as digital audio). For those who want to watch the concert at home, it'll be available on Blu-ray or DVD. Pink Floyd's Classic Albums Return To The Charts Together

Pink Floyd charts multiple albums this week in the U.K., with At Pompeii returning to No. 1 and The ... More Dark Side of the Moon back in the top 10. (MANDATORY CREDIT Koh Hasebe/) Pink Floyd live at Hakone Aphrodite, Kanagawa, August 6, 1971. (Photo by Koh Hasebe/) Quite a few legendary rock bands manage to remain on the charts in Western markets thanks to one compilation or a generation-defining successful album, but the number of acts able to do so with more than one collection at a time, on any consistent basis, is much smaller. Pink Floyd is included in that elite group. The pioneering rock outfit frequently places multiple releases on the rankings in the United Kingdom at the same time, and this frame is no exception to that trend. Several of the band's titles return in what has turned out to be a very busy moment for Pink Floyd in the country where the musicians who make up the act got their start. Two Pink Floyd classics rock their way onto one ranking apiece in the U.K. The Wall reenters the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart at No. 34, which is its sole placement this week. Wish You Were Here already appears on that tally, and this frame, it shoots up more than 10 spaces, jumping from No. 30 to No. 17. At the same time, it also reappears on the Official Albums Download chart, returning at No. 77. As is often the case, The Dark Side of the Moon remains Pink Floyd's most successful project in the U.K. — at least in terms of the number of rankings it can be found on. This frame, the classic collection rises on three tallies, even managing to reenter the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart's top 10, as it surges to No. 9. The only list where it slips slightly is the Official Albums Download chart — which is, interestingly, where Wish You Were Here reappears. Pink Floyd's most recent release, At Pompeii - MCMLXXII, is still doing very well a month into its run on the U.K. charts. The set gains ground on three tallies, returning to the top 20 on two of them and climbing back to the summit on the Official Rock & Metal Albums roster for another turn in the spotlight. Last week, the live effort sat in third place on the rock-only tally, but now it rockets back to the throne, earning its second stint at No. 1 in just the five frames it has spent somewhere on the genre-specific roster.

Jodi Picoult fumes as Hollywood drops her film over 'radioactive' theme

Beloved author Jodi Picoult launched a scorched earth tirade against Hollywood elites for 'bending the knee' and refusing to create movies that could upset President Trump. The bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper slapped down an 'unnamed streaming service' in a video shared to TikTok after plans to create a movie from her 2021 novel were suddenly abandoned. 'Today I found out after four years they have decided to cancel the project because "with the new regime they don't want to do a storyline around Covid,"' she said on Friday. While Picoult did not explicitly name the streaming service, it is widely known that Netflix acquired the rights to her Covid-era tome Wish You Were Here back. The book centers around a NYC woman in her late-20s woman whose life is upended by the arrival of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. Picoult was responding to a question on TikTok about why more of her books haven't been turned into movies. 'This is what I mean when I say even places that are considered to be very liberal, like Hollywood, are terrified of the Trump administration,' she said. 'They think there is going to be backlash if they don't bend the knee.' Trump has used hardball negotiating tactics during his second term to force CEOs and industries into making dramatic concessions. He even slapped extraordinary tariffs on some of America's closest allies. But in a display of fondness for his favorite films, Trump has tried to remake Hollywood in his own image while railing against the cinema hub for its 'wokeness.' He threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign-made films in an effort to bring productions back to Hollywood, warning: 'The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death.' Trump also appointed several Ambassadors to Hollywood - right-leaning celebrities who endorsed him during his campaign, including Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone. But Picoult argues Trump's involvement has softened the industry, which once proudly opposed to the former reality TV star, and made executives and bigwigs more risk-averse. To make matters worse for Picoult, members of the Trump administration have been openly critical of the handling of the Covid pandemic in the United States. Trump himself has promoted a popular theory that the virus began in a lab in Wuhan, China. The book centers around a late-20s woman living in New York City whose life is upended by the arrival of the Covid pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns Most recently, his administration limited approval for annual Covid booster shots to only seniors and others at high risk of falling ill with the virus. 'I guess that means I better go out and write a book about an anti-vaxxer who is married to someone who thinks Ukraine started the war against itself, and they have a baby who drinks raw milk,' Picoult said. 'You'll want to make that, right Hollywood?' Picoult's criticism marks the latest in a string of accusations that Hollywood has been tip-toeing on egg shells around angering Trump during this administration. Oscar-nominated film The Apprentice, based on Trump's early years as an up-and-coming businessman, struggled to secure a streaming deal after Trump criticized the film. 'It's hard to be creative when you're afraid,' Tom Nunan, from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, told the Los Angeles Times. 'I don't think that people have really figured out what to do yet, how to express themselves or what's going to be the most effective.' Picoult was inundated with support from fans who were concerned Netflix would have butchered the adaption and were upset with how Hollywood changed the ending of her last work for the screen. 'After they ruined My Sister's Keeper, I'll stick to just reading them,' one supportive fan wrote. In the comments section of her post, Picoult was asked about another book she wrote, Sing You Home, which followed the story of a woman who wanted to use frozen embryos she created with her ex-husband with her new wife. The rights to the movie were acquired by Ellen DeGeneres back in 2011. A fan asked: 'What ever happened to that?' Picoult responded with a shocking take against Ellen, writing: 'There is not enough alcohol in the world to tell that story.'

Denver Film honoring actress/director Julia Stiles during Women + Film Festival

Denver Film will kick off its Women + Film Festival with a luncheon, award presentation, conversation and film screening. The guest of honor at the event will be acclaimed actress and now director, Julie Stiles. Stiles will become the fifth recipient of the Women + Film Barbara Bridges Inspiration Award. She'll participate in a conversation about making the transition from being in front of the camera to behind it, and then her directorial debut film, "Wish You Were Here," will be screened. It's such a beautiful story about love, and finding love again and finding yourself," CBS First at 4 anchor Mekialaya White asked during a recent zoom call with Stiles. "I have been wanting to direct a movie for a really long time, and I just coun't find the right story. It wasn't until I read Renée Carlino's book that I thought, ' is it,'" Stiles replied. Stiles wrote the screenplay based on the best-selling book "Wish You Were Here" by Renée Carlino. It's a heartwarming romance story about a couple who share a magical night and what happens in the days following their encounter. The movie has been a 5-year passion project for Stiles. "How does it feel to be a women in film? How does that journey feel to you?" White asked. "I think a distinctly female trait, in terms of leadership, is being very collaborative. I mean, I hate to make generalizations like that, but I do think it's true, and at a certain point I had to learn to be front-footed about being collaborative," Stiles explained. "It is hard to kind of be authoritative sometimes in that way," White said. "It's not so much about being female. It's more about as an actress it's so ingrained in me to please everybody, to make sure that everybody is comfortable, everybody likes you, otherwise you won't get cast. Sometimes you have to really shed that and let it go in order to be a good leader, a good director," Stiles added. Stiles pointed out that "Wish You Were Here" has a Colorado connection. "There is a musician, Nathanial Rateliff, that has two songs that are heavily featured in 'Wish You Were Here.' I had them in my head while I was writing the script. I timed sequences to those songs. I reached out and begged him to let me put them in the movie, and he was really gracious about the whole thing. I'm a huge fan, he's a proud Denverite," Stiles said. Stiles has worked in the film industry since she was a child. Here career includes romantic comedies like "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Save the Last Dance," action adventure movies like the "Bourne" series, and character work in films such as "Mona Lisa Smile," "The Omen," Silver Linings Playbook," and "Hustlers." She feels like women have made progress in Hollywood over the years. "I would say that the roles for us have changed. They've become more dynamic. They've become less architypes. There's more nuance in the roles that we get to play and the portrayal of women on screen," Stiles said. "I don't think I could have every believed that I would step behind the camera and be a director if I didn't have examples of that before me." "When it comes to 'Wish You Were Here,' what are you most proud of with the film?" White asked. "I want to make movies, whether it's acting or directing, I want to tell stories that move people and make them feel all the emotions that we are trying to understand as human beings," Stiles responded. Stiles says she's definitely caught the directing bug and will be looking for her next passion project. LINK: For Tickets & Information for the Women + Film Luncheon The Women + Film Luncheon is Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Julia Stiles will make a Red Carpet Appearance at 11:15 a.m., the luncheon program begins at 12:00 p.m., the award presentation and conversation starts at 12:30 p.m., and the film will screen afterward.
