However, it was not a big surprise to the fans as the company has been very poor in keeping the development of this game a secret. Also the introduction of Battlefield Labs in early 2025 sealed the title's existence way before its actual release. The upcoming title is going to be a turning point for Battlefield. After the disastrous performance of Battlefield 2042, EA is leaving no stones unturned to change the fate of this long-standing franchise. However, has EA made a mistake by leaving the last-gen consoles behind? First up, Battlefield's long-standing dream of Call of Duty would have been completed, keeping in mind the promises BF6 is shown. But CoD never left older-gen consoles like PS4 and Xbox One behind, even for the most recent titles like Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 3. And none of these titles have ever compromised on visual qualities as well. Secondly, last-gen consoles still hold a substantial amount of playerbase, which would have boosted Battlefield 6's opening sales to a huge level. But the upcoming title is going to miss out on that as it will probably rely on modern gen consoles only. Yeah it's true that it would have been really tough for the developers to stick in so much graphical brilliance in older-gen consoles having inferior specifications. The majority of the gaming development companies have already followed this path as well. But for Battlefield 6, it is going to be its first, as even Battlefield 2042 was available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Now it seems EA's proposed goal of having 100 million Battlefield 6 players is far from reach, if the company sticks to modern-gen consoles only. Xbox Is Done Selling Movies And TV Shows
12 years after Xbox introduced the Xbox One as a console that would be your entertainment media hub, Xbox is no longer selling TV shows or movies. The news came with little fanfare or notice, though some people who regularly check Xbox's movie and TV section saw a bunch of movies about the end of the world in the featured section right before it all shut down. On July 18, Xbox posted an FAQ quietly confirming that it was done selling movies and TV episodes on its digital storefront, available on PC and console. 'Microsoft has stopped selling new movie and TV content,' said Xbox bluntly in the new FAQ. Microsoft says that anyone who has already bought a movie or TV show through the Xbox store will still have access and be able to watch purchased content on their Xbox consoles or PC. The company also confirmed that it will continue to support MoviesAnywhere in the United States, so any movies you own via Xbox should continue to be available via any platform that supports the movie sharing service. While in 2025 it isn't shocking that Xbox has backed out of selling movies and TV shows, as most people stream stuff or use more popular apps to buy new movies, it is still wild to think about how not that long ago, Xbox was super committed to turning its console into an entertainment hub. Infamously, when Xbox showed off the Xbox One in 2012 for the first time, it spent a good portion of the event talking about TV and movies. Now, that's all gone. End of an era. What does cross-platform mean in gaming?
If you've been casually following the gaming industry and checking out upcoming video games for the past decade or so, you've no doubt heard the term cross-platform come up. You might've put together that it has something to do with multiplayer games, such as Marvel Rivals or Fortnite, but you may not know exactly what it all means. Now that it is rarer to hear of a major multiplayer game that isn't cross-platform, it is better to know what it means for you and how it is impacting your gaming. There are a few layers to what cross-platform means in gaming, so I will break it all down so you know what exactly it is, why it is important, and maybe if you would rather turn it off in certain games. What does cross-platform mean? When people talk about cross-platform support, the component they mainly focus on is crossplay. Crossplay means exactly what it sounds like: games that can be played online between different platforms, aka consoles and PC. Odds are any current multiplayer game you're playing today is a cross-platform game since it has become standard practice for all major releases. Up until the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch generations, there was no option for someone on a PlayStation to play with or against an Xbox player, even if they were playing the same game, with rare exception. While there were some murmurings about crossplay being possible, it wasn't until September 2017 when Fortnite suddenly allowed players on PS4 and Xbox One to play together after a 'configuration issue.' However, this opened the doors for Fortnite to officially launch crossplay as a permanent feature in March 2018. After that, more and more games followed suit and began implementing or launching with full crossplay support to allow players to join up with their friends regardless of platform. Recommended Videos The other aspect to know about cross-platform is cross-progression. This is still less common than crossplay, but is very common among free-to-play games. Cross-progression allows you to start playing a game on one platform, say the PS5, and then continue from where you left off on PC, Xbox, or any other platform the game is on. Why are cross-platform games important? Before cross-platform support became the standard, multiplayer games died off much more quickly with segmented audiences. Instead of having a player base of everyone who purchased the game to find matches with, you would only be able to play with those on your console. Now that games are trying to be live services and host massive servers full of players, segmenting the community by platform would make the experience worse for everyone. The one potential downside to cross-platform support is when one platform, typically PC, has an advantage over the others. This isn't common, but it can impact certain games. Thankfully, nearly all cross-platform games include the option to disable crossplay if you wish.
