Apple is building a secret new operating system — and it's not for your iPhone or Mac

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently wrote an article about Apple working to enter the smart home space with robots and other AI platforms. The news was heavily reported by nearly every publication at the time, including our piece that broke down Apple's smart robot plans. However, few people discussed a key piece of information from Gurman's reporting: Apple is reportedly working on an entirely new operating system for its smart home devices, which it has codenamed "Charismatic." Recent years have seen Apple stick with the same operating systems — iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS and macOS. It's been a while since Apple has introduced anything new in the operating system space. The company rolling out a new OS for smart home devices is a big deal. Why? Because it shows that Apple is committed to making its smart home hub stand out — it's not just adapting its existing large-screen operating systems, it's allegedly designing something new. Google and Amazon have established strong footholds in the smart home market, and Apple's HomePod devices haven't gained as much traction. If a screen-based hub is introduced in the near future with a brand-new Apple OS, it could draw more attention and allow Apple to establish itself as a major player in the smart home world. It sounds like Apple's new smart home operating system is all about support for multiple users with seamless switching. "The devices are meant to be easily shared: They include a front-facing camera that can scan users' faces as they walk toward it and then automatically change the layout, features and content to the preferences of that person," said Gurman in his report. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As far as using Apple's new OS goes, it sounds like Siri will be a significant part of it, much like Alexa and Google Assistant run smart homes alongside other major players in the space. Gurman also mentions a touchscreen component, which is to be expected if the device is meant to serve as a true hub for all connected devices. Netflix's massive tvOS app redesign rolls out to Apple TV 4K now — here's what's new

In May, Netflix announced a massive redesign of its user interface for its mobile and TV apps, the first in over a decade. However, the design wasn't available for Apple TV owners until today. Initially spotted by Redditors (via 9to5Mac), the updated, if controversial, design appears to have gone live with the most recent tvOS update. If you're not seeing it on your Apple TV 4K, make sure you have the latest version of the Netflix app installed. The update gives the app a fresh look with a new homepage that is focused on clarity and speed. Movie and TV show titles will now show more information upfront, including whether or not it's trending or award-winning. Some navigation tools have been moved. Shortcuts like My List and Search, previously in the sidebar, are now at the top of the screen. My List has been renamed My Netflix and will contain your Continue Watching, My List and Remind Me tabs. As with everything else, Netflix is dipping its toes into generative AI. The streamer version involves natural language to describe your mood. So typing something like 'I want something funny and upbeat' should bring back titles that fit those descriptions. While the design has stirred criticism from many, Apple TV users might find the redesign more welcome as Netflix and Apple now resemble each other. The Apple TV app already uses a similar navigation bar at the top of the screen. Apple is also giving its app a visual update with tvOS 26 which is also supposed to be more fluid and simple. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Reportedly, Apple is going to launch a new Apple TV 4K streaming device later this fall with more smart home updates and a better chip. We could see it debut during the September iPhone 17 launch event or possibly in October. What do you think of the new Netflix tvOS app design? Let us know. Apple introduces iOS 26 beta with ringtone additions, interface changes and glimpses of Liquid Glass

Apple has rolled out the sixth developer beta of iOS 26, alongside test versions for iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, macOS and other platforms, as the company edges closer to the software's expected public launch in September, reported Techcrunch. While the latest update delivers relatively minor changes compared to earlier betas, it reportedly introduces several notable adjustments. One of the most visible additions is a set of six new ringtones, all variations of the existing 'Reflection' tone, highlighted the publication. Among these, a sound titled 'Dreamer' has attracted attention from early testers on social media. The release also addresses ongoing debate over changes to the Camera app's mode switcher. Earlier betas reversed the swipe direction used to move between camera modes, a shift that prompted criticism from users who said it disrupted established habits. In beta 5, Apple offered a Settings option allowing a return to the previous behaviour, labelled 'Classic Mode.' However, in this latest release the toggle has been removed and the swipe action has reverted to its original direction, the report stated. Other refinements include faster interface transitions and newly introduced animations when opening and closing apps. The 'Liquid Glass' design system, a translucent, colour-shifting interface element applied across various parts of iOS, has received further updates, with enhanced dispersion effects when navigating app tabs and additional visual changes to the Lock Screen and toggles. Moreover, the report notes that upon installation, users will encounter a refreshed onboarding sequence that highlights key iOS 26 features, including redesigned icons, interface changes in multiple apps, and the Liquid Glass effects. As is typical with pre-release software, the update contains bug fixes alongside the risk of new issues. Testers have reported that this build appears more stable and responsive than previous versions. The public beta of iOS 26 is expected to receive the same changes in an upcoming update.
