China spares major cognac makers from EU brandy dumping duties
SHANGHAI, July 4 (Reuters) - China spared major cognac producers Pernod Ricard ( opens new tab and Remy Cointreau ( opens new tab from new duties of up to 35% on EU brandy announced on Friday, provided they sell at a minimum price. China's Commerce Ministry issued its final ruling following an investigation into brandy originating in the European Union, most of it cognac from France, first launched last year. Duties of up to 34.9% for a period of five years starting from July 5, 2025 would be levied on those without minimum price commitments or those that breached promised minimums, the ministry said in a statement. It did not disclose the minimum prices. French cognac makers have complained they are collateral damage in a broader trade row between Brussels and Beijing over import tariffs imposed on China-made electric vehicles (EVs). Last October, China imposed temporary anti-dumping measures of up to 39% on imports of brandy from the EU, including on French brands including Hennessy and Remy Martin, after the European Union accused Beijing of giving its auto industry unfair subsidies, and imposed duties on imports of Chinese-made EVs. Monthly cognac exports to China, the world's most valuable market for the spirit, have fallen by as much as 70% due to the trade dispute, according to data from the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC), an industry body. Last week Reuters reported that French cognac makers had reached a tentative deal on minimum import prices for the Chinese market, but that China would only finalise the deal if progress was made regarding EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. Pernod Ricard, Remy Cointreau, LVMH's ( opens new tab and Campari ( opens new tab did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. The news will likely be welcomed by brandy distillers that have also seen sales slow in the United States, the world's biggest cognac market by volume, as a result of inflation and economic uncertainty.

Porsche Isn't Done Testing Its First Electric Coupe: Video
It's been almost three years since prototypes of the 718 EV were first caught testing. Car paparazzi initially spotted the Boxster , but it didn't take long before the Cayman appeared in front of the camera. Although prototypes have been around for a long time, the production version remains elusive. That likely means there will be a gap between the demise of the gas models this October and the arrival of the EV replacements. But when are the electric Boxster and Cayman actually coming? The initial plan was for the 718 EV to debut before the electric Cayenne. However, Porsche recently told us that the order has been reversed , with the electric SUV now scheduled to break cover first. The next-generation Cayenne debuts later this year, so we might have to wait until later in 2026 for the electric sports cars. It's unclear whether Zuffenhausen will unveil both body styles at once or launch the convertible first, followed shortly by its fixed-roof sibling. In the meantime, it's business as usual. Another Cayman prototype has been spotted working out at the Nürburgring gym. Although it resembles a two-door Taycan coupe, Porsche has confirmed the car will ride on a different platform rather than the J1 architecture shared with the Audi E-Tron GT . While details remain scarce, the Mission R concept hinted at a relatively low curb weight of 3,306 pounds (1,500 kilograms). But who's going to buy an electric 718? After all, the Boxster and Cayman EVs are expected to be more expensive than the outgoing gas models. The cheapest convertible currently starts at $76,895 before options, while the coupe begins at $74,795. Hopefully, Porsche will keep pricing below six figures. Otherwise, the EVs could end up dangerously close to a base 911 Carrera, which starts at $127,700. We know which of the two we'd choose, and it's not the silent one. Is there still hope for a gas engine in the next-generation models? Yes and no. Porsche has said that future models originally planned as EVs could potentially receive ICE variants . However, it's unclear whether former Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke was referring to the 718 when he made that statement late last year. He might've been thinking about a replacement for the gas-powered Macan, which Porsche has since said could go on sale around 2030 . The upcoming three-row SUV could also be a candidate for combustion power. Even if Porsche manages to keep the 718 EV's weight down and the pricing reasonable, it'll still be a tough sell without a combustion engine roaring behind the driver. It could try to compensate with fake engine noises and simulated gear shifts, but it's just not the same. The 718 EV Is Coming... Mumford & Sons have shocked Dublin pub revellers with a surprise gig, ahead of their huge concert in Malahide Castle. The band, fronted by Marcus Mumford, are headlining at Malahide on Friday, to over 20,000 fans of the folk band. However, 250 patrons in the beer garden of O'Donoghue's Pub were treated to a surprise gig by the band, as they went through the hits for an acoustic set. @universalmusicireland Surprise! Mumford & Sons popped up in O'Donoghue's Pub in Dublin to surprise fans before their headline show tomorrow at Malahide Castle 🖤 #ireland #mumfordandsons #livemusic #dublincity ♬ original sound – Universal Music Ireland A video of the band playing Little Lion Man was shared to TikTok by Universal Music, with some fans of the band who were in the city (just not the pub) raging that they missed out on the intimate gig. 'One day I'll be in the right place at the right time,' one person wrote, while another commented 'damn it I should have stayed in Dublin just 1 extra night.' Another person who was in the beer garden managed to get several videos of the secret gig, where Marcus joked that the fans needed to 'play a game of shut the f**k up' (granted, it was probably necessary as there were no mics), before the crowd sang along with them and regaled them in an olé olé chant.
