Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe will miss summer league matchup vs. Hornets
VJ Edgecombe (left thumb sprain) is out today vs. is progressing in his recovery and will continue his on-court workouts over the next two days. An update on his status will be provided prior to Philadelphia's next Summer League game on Tuesday. #Sixers LAS VEGAS -- The Philadelphia 76ers will continue the summer league on Saturday when they take on the Charlotte Hornets. The Sixers are 1-3 in four summer league games thus far--three in Salt Lake City and one in Vegas--and will be looking to find a way to pick up a win. The Sixers will do so without the services of rookie VJ Edgecombe who will miss his fourth straight game due to a left thumb sprain. The No. 3 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft had a fantastic summer league debut, but has not had the chance yet to build off that performance. As Edgecombe moves forward, the Sixers say they will give an update on his status prior to Tuesday's contest with the Washington Wizards in Vegas. As the Sixers move ahead with the summer league, Edgecombe's status will be something to watch as Philadelphia looks to get the rookies ready to go.

Twins' Byron Buxton hits for the cycle, the first at Target Field since the ballpark opened in 2010
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton hit for the cycle Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The cycle was the first for any player in Target Field history since the ballpark opened in 2010. It was the first cycle by a Twins player since Jorge Polanco had one in 2019. Buxton had three hits through three innings — a single in the first, a triple in the six-run second and a double in the third. After singling again in the fifth, he had one more opportunity in the bottom of the seventh. Buxton, who will participate in next week's Home Run Derby, crushed a 427-foot solo homer off Pirates reliever Andrew Heaney with two outs in the seventh to make it an 11-3 game and complete the cycle. That brought the Target Field crowd to its feet, many of which had received a Buxton bobblehead giveaway at the park. The cycle was the first for any player in Target Field history since the ballpark opened in 2010. It was the first cycle by a Twins player since Jorge Polanco had one in 2019. The cycle-completing homer for Buxton was his 21st of the season, tied for fifth-most in the American League. Buxton was replaced in center field after the seventh inning, but not before receiving a standing ovation curtain call from the Twins fans in attendance. ___ AP MLB:

Rory McIlroy eyes overdue win after moving into share of lead at Scottish Open
The world number two landed five birdies, and just one bogey, to leave him on 11-under par for the tournament, and a share of the overnight lead with American Chris Gotterup. England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge are two shots back following rounds of 69, tied for third with Americans Wyndham Clark and Jake Knapp. McIlroy landed his first birdie at the par-five third before dropping a shot at the seventh. However, he bounced back by picking up a shot on the next hole before further birdies at the 10th and par-three 14th. The Northern Irishman appeared in slight trouble on the par-five 16th after a wayward drive ended in the deep rough. But a beautiful approach allowed him to roll in a straight uphill birdie putt. He set himself up with another birdie chance at the following par three only to see his putt sail agonisingly wide. A perfect 340-yard tee shot at the concluding hole put him in the driving seat once more, but again his birdie attempt rolled narrowly past the hole. However, McIlroy's encouraging performance – with clear signs of him being back at his best – comes at a crucial time with The Open at Royal Portrush to follow next week. It also marks a significant improvement on McIlroy's form since he won the Masters in April to complete the Grand Slam. A moving day 66 to tie the lead for Rory ✍️#GenesisScottishOpen | #RolexSeries — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) July 12, 2025 And he said on Sky Sports: 'It is my first realistic chance to win after the Masters. 'I have had a great season but yes, and I have said this before, when you do something you that have dreamt of for your whole life, and then do it, it was a huge moment in my life and career. 'I just need that little bit of time, and to be back here for the last couple of weeks and digest all of it, I feel like I came here for this tournament with renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the rest of the year.' World number 158 Gotterup equalled the course record with nine birdies in a bogey-free 61 on Friday to start the third day two shots clear. However, he will start the final day on level terms with McIlroy following a level-par round featuring two birdies and the same number of bogeys.

Wiegman backs England's passion ahead of crunch clash against Wales
Sarina Wiegman insists England can match Wales' passion in their crunch clash on Sunday night - but wants her side to focus on themselves. The Lionesses need a win from their final game in Group D to secure progression to the Euro 2025 quarter-finals. It means rivals Wales could send England home from the tournament with a positive result on Sunday, as they remain in search of their first major tournament win. But despite the fight that Wales will undoubtedly bring to St Gallen, Wiegman is confident England are just as enthused by the encounter despite not letting themselves get carried away with the narrative of rivalry. "For them, it is a big game but for us it is too. We want to win and get through the group stage. There is passion but we have passion too,' she said. 'We want to be really focused and good on the ball. We have to be patient. "I learned about the history and the rivalry but, again, we are focused on what we want to do and how we want to play. "We have to move the ball quickly and be patient. We have also seen that Wales are compact and sometimes higher up the pitch too. We expect everything and we will try to break that down." See you tomorrow for a big one, #Lionesses fans! 🏴🏴 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 12, 2025 It is the second time England will face a must-win scenario, having needed all three points against the Netherlands to avoid an early exit after losing their opening game 2-1 to France. While a draw would put them above the Oranje Leeuwinnen at present, they would need to bank on the Dutch failing to get a result against France for that to be sufficient to progress. But Wiegman is unphased by the pressure such a scenario adds to her players, who stepped up to win 4-0 at Stadion Letzigrund against the Dutch. "There is always pressure on England. We will try and play a good game and hopefully we can have the ball a lot and exploit spaces,' she explained. "The tension is building up again because we play tomorrow. It was a must-win [against the Netherlands]. 'The players are very together and are taking responsibility and then they have to perform again. That is what we are going to do tomorrow as well." Wales will hold very different ideas of what they will allow England to do at Kybunpark. Despite losing their opening game 3-0 to the Netherlands and looking completely overrun, they fought back to equalise against France in a gritty performance. At 1-0 down, Jess Fishlock turned home at the back post to spark celebrations in the red wall and write a piece of Welsh history befitting the legacy of the 38-year-old scorer. While they went on to lose 4-1, it is a fight they will undoubtedly show against England with a sense of last chance saloon for the Dragons. But Wiegman is determined not to let the game follow a course that will benefit Wales as she hopes England will prove dominant in possession. "I hope we will see a game where we have a lot of the ball and we play very well in possession, so we don't let it become a fighting game,' she said. "I am not worried [that it will be a scrappy game]. Wales are very compact, they can fight and they are really together but also they can play direct. 'We are trying to prevent that, and the best way is to be on top of things yourself and exploit the spaces. "We have our own preparation and we know what is on the line. We will do everything to win the game and get through.'
