Fact Check: AI-generated image shows Cybertruck-like Soviet vehicle from 1930
Claim:
A photo authentically shows a 1930 Russian or Soviet "Tarantaika," also known as "Boneshaker."
Rating:
A rumor circulating online in May 2025 claimed a photo authentically showed a 1930 Russian or Soviet vehicle called "Tarantaika," or "Boneshaker."
For example, users shared this rumor with the caption "1930 Russian/Soviet 'Tarantaika' (Boneshaker)" on Bluesky, Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived) and X (archived). Some commenters under various posts mentioned the alleged vehicle's striking visible similarities to the Tesla Cybertruck.

However, the picture did not show a Russian "Tarantaika" or "Boneshaker." A user created the image — a fake — with an artificial-intelligence (AI) tool. Snopes found no evidence that a Russian vehicle known by those names ever existed.
In October 2024, Snopes examined the same fake image in another fact check, back when users captioned the photo as allegedly showing a "fully restored 1875 chuckwagon." We traced the roots of the picture to Facebook user Joshohoho, who told us he created the image with the generative-AI platform Midjourney.
The user first posted the picture in the Crazed AI and Cursed AI groups on June 24, saying it showed a "Tesla Cybertruck Frontier Edition." They later reposted the image in the Midjourney Official group on June 28 with the caption, "Tesla Cybertruck: Oregon Trail edition."
Searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo and Google failed to locate any information about a historic vehicle with the name "Tarantaika." A search for "Boneshaker" found a stock image of a "Bone-shaker" bicycle from France dating back to 1869, displayed at a March 2011 exhibition in Moscow, Russia, according to the Shutterstock image-licensing website.
For further reading, a previous fact check examined a photo allegedly showing a crash involving two Tesla Cybertrucks.

Russian strike kills 5, including 1 year old, hours after Trump calls Putin
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — At least five people, including a one-year-old child, were killed in a Russian drone strike on the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky overnight, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus said Thursday. The attack came just hours after Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, Putin 'very strongly' said that Russia will retaliate for Ukraine's weekend drone attacks on Russian military airfields. Six more people were wounded in the attack and have been hospitalized, Chaus said. According to him, six Shahed-type drones struck residential areas of Pryluky early Thursday morning, causing severe damage to residential buildings. Hours later, seventeen people were wounded in a Russian drone strike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early Thursday, including children, a pregnant woman, and a 93-year-old woman, regional head Oleh Syniehubov wrote on Telegram. At around 1:05 a.m., Shahed-type drones struck two apartment buildings in the city's Slobidskyi district, causing fires and destroying several private vehicles. 'By launching attacks while people sleep in their homes, the enemy once again confirms its tactic of insidious terror,' Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.

Russia says it will repair bombers damaged by Ukraine's drones
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian aircraft were damaged but not destroyed in a June 1 attack by Ukraine, and they will be restored, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with the state news agency TASS. "The equipment in question, as was also stated by representatives of the Ministry of Defence, was not destroyed but damaged. It will be restored," Ryabkov said. The United States assesses that Ukraine's drone attack over the weekend hit as many as 20 Russian warplanes, destroying around 10 of them, two U.S. officials told Reuters, a figure that is about half the number estimated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation on Wednesday that Moscow would have to respond to the June 1 attack.
