AI171 crash: Centre issued nine notices to Air India for safety violations in six months; investigation under way
NEW DELHI: Over the last six months, Air India has received nine show cause notices linked to five different safety violations, according to minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol in the Rajya Sabha.
Enforcement action has been completed in one case, while investigations continue into others.
A major focus of concern is the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 on June 12, 2025. The flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 260 people.
The aircraft went down into a medical hostel complex near the airport, leaving just one survivor out of the 241 people on board.
The director general of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has ordered a formal investigation under Rule 11 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017. A preliminary report, published after a month of the incident, outlines initial findings, including mid-air engine failure, cockpit confusion, and failed recovery attempts within seconds of takeoff.

Union civil aviation minister Rammohan Naidu addressed the issue on the first day of the Parliament's Monsoon Session, reaffirming the government's commitment to a thorough probe. Despite the incident, MoS Mohol mentioned that no adverse reliability trends have been found in recent reports related to the crashed aircraft.
The full investigation is ongoing to determine the root causes and contributory factors behind the deadly crash.

Narsoo village sarpanch Ashok Kumar Sharma acknowledged the importance of the project while attributing the collapse to natural causes rather than negligence. He said to news agency ANI, "Built to meet long-standing demand, it aims to provide transportation and access to schools, which people previously lacked... The incident was not due to negligence; instead, a storm with rain and strong winds caused rocks to slide, damaging the bridge. People expected to get the bridge soon, but it will take another 5-6 months. A committee should be formed, and the bridge's design should be changed." Subhash Chander, district development council of Narsoo, emphasized swift action and accountability, he added "It was a long-overdue demand. When work started, people were happy. Indian officials at that time confirmed that the pilot issued multiple distress calls before the Gatwick-bound flight crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. 'Thrust not achieved… falling… Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! ' the preliminary report of the Indian AAIB said before the aircraft lost height and erupted in flames. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian, according to Air India. Apart from the formal investigation, the Indian government has set up a high-level committee to examine the causes leading to the crash. The body will be focusing on formulating procedures to prevent and handle aircraft emergencies in the future, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statment. Meanwhile, Air India and the government are probing several aspects of the crash, including issues linked to its engine thrust, flaps, and why the landing gear remained open as the plane took off and then came down. The authorities are yet to share the final report on the crash.
