SMCP Q2 Sales Up 3% With Full-price Strategy Boosting Growth

The Americas delivered a standout performance, with second-quarter sales surging 21.6 percent. This growth was fueled by price increases and higher volumes, supported by the momentum from several U.S. store openings last year. Regional sales reached 49.6 million euros, despite the closure of 25 points of sale in Canada following the shutdown of Hudson's Bay locations.
The company is currently seeking a new partner in Canada.
In its home country of France, sales edged up by less than 1 percent to 104.9 million euros. Across the rest of the Europe, Middle East and Africa region (excluding France), sales increased by 3 percent to 106 million euros. SMCP noted that retail performance remained steady, while wholesale results were affected by timing shifts.
In the Asia-Pacific region, sales declined by 6.2 percent to 43.9 million euros, reflecting a wave of store closures, including the exit from China. However, EMEA benefited from expansion into new markets, such as the Balkans and Jordan.
By brand, Sandro posted a 3.3 percent increase in second-quarter sales, reaching 154.7 million euros. Sister brand Maje grew 4.9 percent to 113.6 million euros. Combined sales for Claudie Pierlot and men's brand Fursac totaled 36.2 million euros, down 1.3 million year-over-year, in line with expectations following the closure of four Claudie Pierlot stores during the period.
For the first half of the year, total sales reached 601.1 million euros, representing a 3 percent organic increase.

A former Clinton adviser lauded President Trump's EU trade trip as an absolute success, and said the Europeans "came scrambling" for a deal. After 2 Way Morning Meeting Host Mark Halperin asked former Hillary Clinton and Jared Polis adviser Dan Turrentine if he deemed President Trump's European trade trip, in which the president and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a landmark trade deal at his Scotland golf course, a success, the longtime Democratic consultant replied "absolutely." "Absolutely, we're gonna get to trade here," Turrentine said Monday, though he qualified his praise by claiming that we still don't know the details of the trade deal. Trump and Von der Leyen announced the deal at his Trump Turnberry golf club Sunday. The deal stipulates that there will be 15% tariffs on EU goods, while goods such as steel, aluminum and copper will continue to be taxed at 50%. The deal also states that the EU will invest $600 billion into the U.S. economy and buy $750 billion worth of American energy by 2028, per a statement put out by the White House. Trump touted the agreement as the "biggest deal ever made." Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick hailed the deal as a "monster" win for the United States after it was announced. "They agreed for the first time ever to cut all their tariffs, cut their barriers and let American businesses and farmers and ranchers and fishermen, finally, sell into the European Union… massive market. This is huge for America," Lutnick told Bret Baier Monday. Turrentine said that not just the deal itself, but the fact that it was announced at the president's golf course showed that Trump emerged from the trade negotiations with the upper hand. Trump has long had friction with Europe, accusing the EU of ripping off the U.S. on trade and NATO countries of not contributing their fair share. "The Europeans came scrambling to him, and it does sound like the Europeans badly wanted a deal," Turrentine said. "Whether it was the German automakers frantic because they want to sell cars here, or French luxury good-makers talking about declining sales, the Europeans wanted a deal." French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou slammed the deal as "submission" and said the announcement was a "dark day" in a post on X. "It is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, brought together to affirm their common values and to defend their common interests, resigns itself to submission," Bayrou wrote. Trump's trade announcement comes on the heels of a string of successful trade negotiations with the UK, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia. Though critics contend that the president's tariff policy will spike inflation and depress growth, so far inflation is down from its Biden-era peaks and the economy grew 3% last quarter. However, citing the country's "obnoxious" trade barriers and business with Russia, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on India. Turrentine said that Trump's trade blitz represents a "new world order" for international commerce.

Meta's Reality Labs posts $4.53 billion loss in second quarter
Meta's Reality Labs, the unit tasked with building the futuristic metaverse, continues bleeding money. The social media company reported its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday and revealed that Reality Labs logged an operating loss of $4.53 billion while recording $370 million in sales during the period. Analysts were projecting that unit to post a second-quarter operating loss of $4.99 billion while generating $381 million in sales. The Reality Labs division oversees the Quest line of virtual reality headsets in addition to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which are jointly developed with the French-Italian eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica. Meta wants Reality Labs to create cutting-edge products similar to the prototype Orion augmented reality glasses that could underpin a new, immersive computing platform. But developing VR, AR and other new devices is an expensive endeavor, with the Reality Labs division logging nearly $70 billion in cumulative losses since late 2020. Meta in April said Reality Labs recorded an operating loss of $4.2 billion during the first quarter while bringing in $412 million in sales. Although the Quest VR headsets haven't become breakout hits, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are showing signs of success. EssilorLuxottica on Monday said Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses sales more than tripled year over year for the first half of 2025. The eyewear giant and Meta debuted in June the new Oakley Meta smart glasses, which is the latest product spawned from their partnership. Meta said in April that an undisclosed number of Reality Labs employees who were part of its Oculus Studios VR and AR software unit were laid off.
