Meta's Reality Labs posts $4.53 billion loss in second quarter

CNBC30-07-2025
Meta's Reality Labs, the unit tasked with building the futuristic metaverse, continues bleeding money.
The social media company reported its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday and revealed that Reality Labs logged an operating loss of $4.53 billion while recording $370 million in sales during the period. Analysts were projecting that unit to post a second-quarter operating loss of $4.99 billion while generating $381 million in sales.
The Reality Labs division oversees the Quest line of virtual reality headsets in addition to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which are jointly developed with the French-Italian eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica. Meta wants Reality Labs to create cutting-edge products similar to the prototype Orion augmented reality glasses that could underpin a new, immersive computing platform.
But developing VR, AR and other new devices is an expensive endeavor, with the Reality Labs division logging nearly $70 billion in cumulative losses since late 2020. Meta in April said Reality Labs recorded an operating loss of $4.2 billion during the first quarter while bringing in $412 million in sales.
Although the Quest VR headsets haven't become breakout hits, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are showing signs of success.
EssilorLuxottica on Monday said Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses sales more than tripled year over year for the first half of 2025. The eyewear giant and Meta debuted in June the new Oakley Meta smart glasses, which is the latest product spawned from their partnership.
Meta said in April that an undisclosed number of Reality Labs employees who were part of its Oculus Studios VR and AR software unit were laid off.

Google (GOOGL) Becomes Latest Victim of ShinyHunters Salesforce Hack

U.S. tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL) has revealed that it has become the latest victim of a data breach using Salesforce (CRM) databases. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Google revealed in a blog post that some customers' information has been stolen via one of its Salesforce database systems. Google Hunt Google's Threat Intelligence Group said the database is used for storing contact information and related notes for small and medium businesses. It has been breached by a hacking group known as ShinyHunters. 'The data retrieved by the threat actor was confined to basic and largely publicly available business information, such as business names and contact details,' the company said. Google did not reveal how many customers are affected or whether it has received a ransom demand. Google did say, however, that the ShinyHunters group is likely preparing a data leak site, which some ransomware gangs use to publish stolen data to extort victims into paying a ransom. Long Line of Hits A number of companies using Salesforce have also witnessed data breaches in recent weeks. This includes French luxury brand Chanel, fellow premium group Louis Vuitton (LVMUY), Dior, Tiffany & Co, Adidas (ADDYY), Qantas (QUBSF) and Allianz Life. Hackers from the ShinyHunters group have been stealing data from Salesforce customers since early 2025. They use a trick called 'social engineering,' in which they call employees pretending to be IT support and convince them to install a fake app. This allows hackers to bypass normal security and access sensitive customer data. Salesforce confirmed that its platform has not been compromised. Instead, the breaches stem from credential theft and poor access controls on the customer side. The company is urging users to adopt best practices, including multi-factor authentication (MFA), limited access, and tighter oversight of connected applications. However, the incidents are still likely to have caused a dent in Salesforce's reputation with clients and the wider public. As one can see below, tech risks are key for both the business and investors. Is CRM a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, CRM has a Moderate Buy consensus based on 33 Buy, 9 Hold and 2 Sell ratings. Qualcomm (QCOM) Delivers Solid Results—But Apple Headwinds Still Loom

QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) is one of the . On July 31, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst C.J. Muse reiterated a 'Neutral' rating on the stock with a $150.00 price target. The rating affirmation follows Qualcomm's quarterly report where the chipmaker announced revenues of $10.4 billion and earnings per share of $2.77. These figures slightly exceeded consensus estimates of $10.3 billion and $2.71. Looking ahead, guidance for the September quarter was also raised to $10.7 billion in revenue and $2.85 in earnings per share, surpassing analyst expectations. 'QCOM reported a modest beat ($10.4B/$2.77 vs. cons $10.3B/$2.71) and raise ($10.7B/$2.85 vs cons $10.6B/$2.83) despite fears of pull-ins setting up for a Sept Q miss. In fact, mgmt. noted no signs of tariff-related pull-ins currently (a bit surprising given recent commentary from QRVO, MTK, etc.), with handset upside in the Sept Q driven exclusively from the strength of a new product launch.' An aerial view of a bustling semiconductor production zone showcasing the company's integrated circuits. The firm discussed how Qualcomm boasts strong positioning in XR/AR markets. Meta's smart glasses have exceeded expectations while new Snapdragon-powered devices are expected from key partner Xiaomi. The firm is also optimistic that the company is on track to hit the FY26 revenue target of $4B. 'Automotive is also likely ahead of schedule with revenues expected to be ~$1.0B in the September Q, leaving the company well on track to hit the FY26 revenue target of $4B. ' There was some bad news, too. 'As for the bad news, on the call the company guided for typical seasonality into the December Q ex- AAPL – which we believe implies a bit downside to consensus numbers coming in. Also, EBT margins in QCT of 28% in the Sept Q are a clear disappointment and are only likely to get worse as AAPL is fully removed from the model – we believe a primary driver of the after-hours weakness.' The firm sees better opportunities in other semiconductor stocks right now. QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) develops wireless technologies, supplies chips for mobile, automotive, and IoT, licenses patents, and invests in emerging tech. While we acknowledge the potential of QCOM as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
