I let my mother die after she was diagnosed with rare disease... it was shockingly easy

Daily Mail4 days ago

On the morning of Barbara Goodfriend's death, friends and family gathered at her house, laughing at old stories and sharing tears over her decision to end her own life.
The New Jersey native had spent her life working in fashion and raising her daughter, but in April, the widow, 83 at the time, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) - a rare neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive paralysis of the muscles.
Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, the condition, which affects about 30,000 Americans, affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord - causing loss of motor function and eventually respiratory failure.
There is no cure and those who are diagnosed with it die within three to five years.
However, Goodfriend's case was severe and she was given just months to live. Doctors told her she likely wouldn't live through autumn.
Rather than spend the last remaining months of her life suffering, the grandmother-of-two decided to end her life using Medical Aid In Dying, also known as MAID, nine months after her diagnosis.
Goodfriend said: 'What am I going to give this up for? To be in a wheelchair? To have a feeding tube? I wish I had more time to live, but I don't want more time as a patient.'
'I hope that something will get done, something will be accomplished, so that others can have the privilege that I'm having,' she told CBS News.
MAID is an end-of-life option provided to terminally ill Americans in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia.
It was legalized in New Jersey in 2019.
While the CDC is yet to announce how many people died of MAID in 2024 across the states where it is legal, officials reported 1,216 deaths in 2021.
Since the law took effect in 2019, a total of 287 people have used MAID to die in New Jersey.
The option for MAID is only given to those who have less than six months to live, have decision-making capacity to request the option, give informed consent and are residents of the state where it is legal.
An attending and a consulting physician then determine if the patient is medically eligible for MAID.
If found eligible, the patient needs to submit three requests to opt for MAID to their attending physician - two oral requests and one written request for final approval.
The process involves a combination of drugs, including digoxin, diazepam, morphine, amitriptyline and phenobarbital into the body.
They slow breathing and heartrate down eventually to the point of stopping.
According to the law, patients must self-administer these drugs. They normally do this by mixing the powdered medications in two ounces of juice and drinking them - which is what Goodfriend opted to do.
It usually takes between five to 20 minutes for all the medications to stop the heart from beating, however, many people die within the first few minutes, depending on the severity of their illness.
After she made her decision to opt for MAID in November 2024, she noted that none of her family members, particularly her daughter, Carol Getz Abolafia, tried to stop her.
Abolafia later told CBS News that even though the decision to let her mother go was the hardest thing she had done, she ultimately respected Goodfriend's wishes to opt for MAID and die in comfort.
She said: 'I think the hardest part in all of this, for me as her only child, is to support something so difficult and so contrary to what you want to do.
'The ultimate love that you can give somebody is to respect their wish, to live the way they wanna live, and to die the way they want to die.'
As the day of her death came closer, Goodfriend spent a week with her family saying goodbye.
'It's been a week of family, friends. We've done a lot of crying, all of us, but we've laughed. We've enjoyed being together,' she said.
Dr Robin Plumer, who has attended nearly 200 MAID deaths in New Jersey, assured Goodfriend she would go to sleep after drinking the drugs and it would be a 'peaceful, dignified death.'
'So, here we are today, and what a strange day this is - that somebody gets to pick the day that they're going to die,' Dr Plumer added.
As her teary-eyed family surrounded her in her bedroom, Goodfriend died on November 15, 2024.
According to a Gallup poll, about two-thirds of Americans support MAID as an end-of-life choice.
But groups such as United Spinal Association fight against the legalization of MAID or what they call 'assisted suicide.'
But Goodfriend said before her death: 'If it's not a good idea for you, don't consider it, but there has to be a way for those who want it.

Courtney Stodden struggles to contain her surgically-enhanced assets as she channels her inner Baywatch in tiny red swimwear while posing for sexy sun-kissed pictures

Courtney Stodden showed off her jaw-dropping curves in a sexy Instagram snap as she slipped into a tiny red swimwear. The American model, 30, set pulses racing as she channeled her inner Baywatch in the strappy number for a slew of Instagram snaps. The blonde bombshell twirled around to display her sizzling physique under the sunshine, drawing attention to her surgically-enhanced cleavage. Courtney appeared in her highest spirit beaming from ear to ear and looking carefree as she enjoyed soaking the sun while in Calabasas, California. The former beauty pageant showcased her figure with confidence after admitting she would not change her appearance due to cruel online trolls. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In a bold statement which accompanied the sizzling pictures, Courtney wrote: 'PSA: I'm not taking this Baywatch bikini off just because some troll behind a screen has WiFi and opinions. 'Too skinny? Too curvy? Too much? Cool, I'll be all of it. 'I've spent years battling my body—now we're besties. 'No makeup. No apologies. Just vibes. 'If that bothers you, hydrate and scroll. 'To anyone who's ever felt 'not enough': you're already a damn masterpiece. She concluded wisely: 'Now go save a life—yours.' Her stunning Instagram post comes after the Hollywood pinup shared her feelings on her tragic teenage bride story after her 14 year wedding anniversary. The star has told that tying the knot with 65-year-old A Time To Kill actor Doug Hutchinson was a bad move and she won't pretend otherwise. She was just 16-years-old when she married Hutchison, who was 51 at the time, at a Las Vegas wedding chapel in 2011. 'It stays with me, the pain, I won't stay quiet,' she told adding Doug was 'emotionally abusive.' The model then said: 'My voice is my power and for every voice silenced, I'll shout louder. And I won't ask for permission to do what's right. Not anymore. I speak for that little girl within.' Stodden added: 'I am living life on my own terms now. Everything that's happened in my life, I have handled. I am strong, resilient. I am coming back to myself. I will never let anyone silence me again.' And she wants to help others: 'I want past victims and survivors to really tap into that part of themselves. We are so strong.' She has also called Doug a 'groomer' who had control over her body, and finances.' Due to her being a minor, Courtney's parents had to sign off on the union. 'I think the marriage that I went through in Vegas — it was so fast and I couldn't process it because I was 16,' Courtney shared. Courtney acknowledged the 14-year anniversary of her married to Doug. She shared: '14 years ago, a 16-year-old girl stepped into a world that would try to break her. Relentlessly bullied, mocked, told to end her life. Violated. Shattered. Lost in pain she never asked for. 'But she survives… 'Today is a sacred reminder: we are not defined by what was done to us—we are defined by the fire it forged within us. By how we rise. By how we protect the little girl who still lives inside us, fiercely and unapologetically. 'I will never let anyone silence her again. I wake up for her. I fight for her. And every day, I choose to stand in my power. 'To every woman reading this: you are not alone. You are not broken. You are becoming.' She faced widespread media scrutiny and was labeled everything from a 'child bride' to a 'w***e' for marrying a man 34 years her senior, all of which impacted her body image and mental health. The couple went on to appear in a string of reality TV shows such as Couples Therapy, Celebrity Big Brother and Hollywood Hillbillies. This comes just as Stodden shared a note about 'coming back' while touching on her 'strength and ambition' following her teen wedding scandal from over a decade ago. Stodden's note to her Insta Stories was powerful. 'She's coming back to herself... Look at her,' began the passage. 'Everything that's happened in her life, she's f***ing handled. She works hard. She is strong, she is ambitious, she is resilient. She is genuine and loyal. 'Anyone who doesn't value what she brings to the table, doesn't deserve her. She's seeing her worth. She's living life on her terms. She's coming back to herself.' The quote was from Women Of The Future. Last month she talked body shaming as she has been trolled for over a decade about her shape. 'The only thing wide about me is my mouth — so let me use it: Our bodies are so torn apart by people hiding behind their devises — it's honestly eww!!!!' began the documentary star. 'I don't vibe with women who do not support other women. Our bodies are all different. They come in different shapes and sizes— if you can't vibe, we can't ride.' Her hashtag was for 'body confidence' as she added, 'Share the love you butterfly.' ✨ The former teen bride is wed to movie producer Jared Safier at the Casa de Monte Vista hotel in Palm Springs, California. It was in a 'last-minute' ceremony, she said. Courtney began dating the Emmy-winning TV producer in summer 2023 after meeting on the set of a film project and they were engaged by June 2024. She told the outlet that she and Jared felt now was the 'perfect time' to get married as both of their families were in Los Angeles for the Thanksgiving holiday. 'We planned on getting married, and we didn't have a date. We just kind of looked at each other, and we're the same kind of crazy. We just looked at each other and we're just like, 'This is the perfect time to do it,' she explained.

Gwyneth Paltrow reveals the great lengths she is going to in order to stop her blonde hair from falling out

She's well known for her gorgeous golden blonde locks all over Hollywood. And Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, has now revealed the great lengths she goes to to stop her hair from falling out. The actress revealed she's tried a handful of treatments over the years, including injecting her scalp. She said: 'So many women I know are quietly dealing with hair loss. 'I've tried a handful of treatments over the years, nothing seemed to move the needle – not even injecting my scalp with actual needles.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The actress revealed she's tried a handful of treatments over the years, including injecting her scalp The latest treatment she's tried involved a plastic surgeon and a device that uses acoustic sound waves and air pressure to stimulate hair growth. Discussing how the treatment has worked for her, she said: 'It was completely painless. Honestly, I think my hair's already feeling a bit fuller.' According to the Cleveland Clinic, studies show that more than 50 per cent of females will experience noticeable hair loss. There are several possible causes of hair loss in women, including damaged hair follicles, rapid weight loss, stress, chemical hair treatments, an underlying health condition, and hormonal changes. Gwyneth's interview comes after she displayed her incredible figure on Monday, as she shared a slew of snaps modelling pieces from the Goop clothing sale. The actress took to her Instagram to share a sizzling mirror selfie showing off her chiselled midriff in a navy bikini top and shorts. The Oscar winner put her best fashion foot forward as she gave fans a look at how she had styled her favourite items from her brand. In one casual look, Gwyneth put on a leggy display in a pair of denim cut-off shorts and a striped red-and-white T-shirt. While she showed off her toned figure in a pair of skin-tight brown leggings and a cropped hoodie, as she headed for a workout. Captioning the photos, Gwyneth promoted her brand, writing: 'A few of my favorite looks from the @goop sale.' The Hollywood star launched the wellness company in September 2008, with it evolving into an e-commerce site, lifestyle publication and even a Netflix documentary titled The Goop Lab With Gwyneth Paltrow. But while she has become renowned for revolving her life around Goop, Gwyneth was recently accused of not being as hands-on with her brand as much as she makes out. Last week, she attended the 2025 Mindvalley Manifesting Summit and spoke about the brand's now infamous 'This Smells Like My Vagina' candle. But fans questioned how much truth there was to her recounting of the controversial candle's origins, suggesting it was a 'fake PR story'. Goop released a candle called 'This Smells Like My Vagina' with the company Heretic in 2020, going instantly viral. Detailing how they came up with the product, Gwyneth explained that she was working with the perfumer Douglas Little to create scents for Goop when she jokingly picked one up and said: 'This smells like my vagina.' She recalled: 'That product is so fascinating because we were messing around with different scents one day. And I smelled something and I was like, "Oh, that smells like... you know". 'I was joking. And then [Douglas] was like, "Oh we should make that a candle and put it on the site." The entrepreneur thought Douglas was kidding and sarcastically agreed that it 'sounded like a winner.' She continued: 'All of a sudden, it was literally on the website. And then we broke the Internet again. And then it took us a long time to live that one down'. However, Gwyneth said she decided that she liked the idea, saying: 'But, I kept it on the site because there is an aspect to women's sexuality, that I think, we're socialized to feel a lot of shame. 'And I sort of loved this kind of punk rock idea. "We are beautiful and we are awesome and go f*** yourself."' And while the story emitted applause and laughter from the sold-out audience, fans are now becoming increasingly dubious. Some pointed to the story as proof that Gwyneth isn't as enmeshed with the brand as she says she is, taking to Reddit to suggest: 'It is possible she has little to do with the day to day running of the business. 'A lot of these celebrity businesses are run by actual business professionals and the celebrity takes all the credit. 'It's not like she's designing products or has a background in marketing and finances. She may just be the mascot.' But others accused Gwyneth of fabricating the entire story for the sake of an exciting PR spin. They wrote: '"I just make jokes and then my team goes rogue without thinking of potential PR issues, and I have no say in what is produced, labelled or goes on the website for my own brand." Sure, Jan'. 'Out of touch millionaires really want us plebs to believe they say things jokingly in meetings and entire product launches happen by accident?' 'Hate these fake PR stories'; 'They knew it would sell because of the buzzy name, no need to be cheeky.'

Chiffon cake with lemon and blueberries

Chiffon cake is American, a relation of angel food cake. Both are light but chiffon is slightly richer because it contains egg yolks. It's usually made in a tube pan so there's a column in the middle. You can either fill the central space with fruit that spills out over the top of the cake, or decorate the top with blueberries and blackberries or purple edible flowers. Requires cooling time. Overview Prep time 40 mins Cook time 1 hr Serves 12 Ingredients For the cake 8 large eggs, separated 160g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 120ml full-fat milk 80ml vegetable oil 135g plain flour ½ tsp cream of tartar For the cream 400ml double cream 125g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon To decorate blueberries, blackberries, pared lemon zest, and/or edible flowers Method Step Preheat the oven to 170C/160C fan/gas mark 3 ½. Step Put 8 egg yolks, 70g caster sugar and a pinch of salt into the bowl of a free-standing mixer (or into a large bowl if using an electric hand whisk). Beat on a high speed for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture is pale and thick. Step Add 1 tsp vanilla bean paste. Start whisking again, this time on a low speed while you pour in 120ml full-fat milk and 80ml vegetable oil. Sift in 135g plain flour in 4 batches, folding it in using a large metal spoon. Carefully transfer this to a large bowl. Step Clean the mixer bowl and whisk. They must be clean, or the egg whites won't whip up properly. Add 8 egg whites and ½ tsp cream of tartar to the clean bowl. Whisk on a medium/high speed until the mixture looks like airy foam – about 5 minutes. Step With the mixer still running, slowly pour in 90g caster sugar, a little at a time. Once all the sugar has been added, continue whisking until the meringue holds medium peaks and is glossy but not dry. If it's too dry, you'll have problems incorporating it into the yolk mixture without losing lots of volume. Step Mix the meringue into the egg yolk batter in 4 batches, using a balloon whisk to incorporate it. Step Once all the meringue has been added and there are no streaks in the mixture, pour the batter into a 10in, 2-piece tube pan. It's important that the pan is made of 2 parts – it should have a removable base. Don't use any fat or paper to line the tin – the sponge needs to grip on to the walls of the tin as it's climbing. Give the pan a few sharp taps on the counter to knock out any large air pockets. Step Bake for 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Remove the tin from the oven and invert it. Don't worry, the cake won't fall out. Most tube pans have little feet around the edge to elevate them when the cake is cooling. If yours doesn't have feet, put the pan on to a wine bottle (the bottle should go into the tube). Step After an hour the cake should be completely cool. Run a thin, flat knife around the outside of the cake to separate the sponge from the pan. Push the base, with the cake attached to it, out of the pan. Use the knife to carefully remove the base from the cake. Put the cake on to a serving platter. Step If you are going to serve it that day – it's best eaten within 2 days – make the cream. Beat 400ml double cream with 125g caster sugar and 1 tsp vanilla extract, then add the finely grated zest of 1 lemon. Add lemon juice gradually (I usually end up using the juice of ½ lemon). It makes the cream thicken, so judge how much you need by both the flavour and the thickness. Step Using a palette knife, spread the cream all over the cake. You shouldn't see any of the sponge but don't spread it too thickly. You will have cream left over (it's delicious with berries). Step There are many ways you can decorate this. Fill the funnel with berries and let them tumble out over the surface of the cake, or arrange berries, zest and, if you like, flowers on top. Blueberries and blackberries work well colour-wise (even though the latter aren't in season).
