Hayes sets sights on third Classic Mile with Rubylot: ‘he's classy and honest'

Australian handler expects Packing Hermod to be hard to beat but fancies his charge's chances in opening leg of four-year-old series

David Hayes is optimistic Rubylot has what it takes to challenge nominal favourite Packing Hermod and prove hard to beat in Friday's Classic Mile at Sha Tin.
Chasing his third triumph in the first leg of the four-year-old series, Hayes is confident Rubylot will continue his sparkling form after notching two wins and a second from four starts this campaign.
The classy son of Rubick stamped his Classic Mile credentials with a strong win against several of Friday's rivals in the Class Two Racing Club Cup (1,400m) last start.

Rubylot and Packing Hermod share the top rating of 93 in this year's field, making it the first time since 2013 that the coveted race has not featured a contender with a triple-figure rating.
'I think Packing Hermod is probably the horse to beat, but Rubylot is joint top-rated, an in-form horse and crying out for a mile,' said Hayes, who bids to add to his Classic Mile successes with Resfa (1999) and Charming City (2001).
'I think he's coming through the best form and he's run well in the Class Two races, so I'm looking forward to running him against some Class Three horses at set weights.
'His record says he's classy and honest and hopefully we see that on Friday.'
A winner at five of 16 starts, Rubylot must overcome a seven-pound swing in the weights in favour of Packing Hermod from their last clash.
Brenton Avdulla, who partners Rubylot again on Friday, capitalised on an inside run from gate two to beat Young Champion by half a length in the Racing Club Cup, while Packing Hermod was forced to make his run from last after jumping from barrier 12.
On Friday, Rubylot has drawn further out in barrier 10, while Packing Hermod figures to get an ideal run from six.
Packing Hermod, who has built an imposing record of four wins and a second from six starts, can give Zac Purton a breakthrough triumph in one of the only Hong Kong features to have eluded him.
From 15 attempts, the champion jockey has had to settle for second on Garlic Boy (2013) and Helene Feeling (2024) while also finishing third on Dibayani (2014), Beauty Generation (2017) and Packing Treadmill (2023).
Purton has a perfect record from three rides on the gelding, who is also a son of Rubick. The Australian sire is better known as a producer of sprinters, but the dam's side of both Rubylot and Packing Hermod suggests the mile won't pose a problem.
'I just think he could be a really nice middle-distance horse,' Hayes said of Rubylot.
'Further than a mile will be no problem as well. He's a lovely, relaxed horse and his racing pattern is good.'
The Lui-trained Divano, the next highest-rated runner in the field of 14 on a mark of 86, is one runner who looms as a query at 1,600m and he will need a sublime Blake Shinn ride to overcome barrier 14.
Johannes Brahms will have claims after also finishing powerfully from back in the field in the Racing Club Cup to run third.
Pierre Ng Pang-chi's import won impressively on his third Hong Kong start under James McDonald in December and Frenchman Mickael Barzalona is booked to ride him on Friday.

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead Kaden Groves celebrates winning stage 20 of the Tour de France. Photo: Reuters Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns. Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris. The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier. This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins. "They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out. "I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow." Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps. So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test

British and Irish Lions beat Australia in first Test British and Irish Lions' Sione Tuipulotu celebrates scoring a try for the tourists. Photo: Reuters A relentless British and Irish Lions were ferocious in attack and solid in defence to edge a dogged Australia and win a bruising first Test 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday. The tourists repeatedly laid siege to the Wallabies' line for a 17-5 lead at the break before soaking up second-half pressure to bank the win with both sides scoring three tries. A late Australia try meant the scoreline flattered a poor Wallabies side, with the Lions never looking in trouble after opening up a 24-5 lead shortly after half-time. Played in front of 52,229 fans at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium, many wearing the Red of the Lions, the tourists proved too strong for a brave, but outgunned Australian outfit. With Scottish fly-half Finn Russell pulling the strings in the backs and outstanding loose forwards Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne dominating up front, the Lions showed why they went into the Test as firm favourites. But despite being behind for all of the match, the Wallabies didn't roll over, and fears of a huge defeat never materialised. The Lions now head to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for next Saturday's second Test 1-0 up in the three-match series. (AFP)

Hugh Bowman eyes best Hong Kong season before a freshen up, and maybe some rides, in Europe

A 'delighted' Hugh Bowman is itching to head off to Europe for a break and maybe even a few race rides, but first he's keen to better his Hong Kong personal best of 69 wins in a season. The star Australian sits on 68 victories with three meetings to go in the 2024-25 campaign and he has six chances to add to his tally at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. 'I'm delighted – it's been a pretty consistent year for me,' said the jockey. 'It's been a good, consistent flow of winners with the exception of being a little bit quiet through the November-December period and a little bit quiet through June. 'It's been an improvement on last year, but bearing in mind that last year I was injured for a period of time and I did struggle with careless riding suspensions. I've had a few this year but it hasn't been quite to the same extent as last year. 'That's an area I'd like to improve on again next season. I set a goal to ride 100 winners. I think that might have been a little bit ambitious, actually – I won't do that again – but I do think I can do better than I've done this year.' Bowman rates Enjoy Golf in the first section of the Class Four Garden Handicap (1,200m) and Prince Alex in the Class Four Green Handicap (1,650m) among his better hopes at the midweek meeting. Enjoy Golf makes all for an impressive first win as @HugeBowman collects a race-to-race double at Sha Tin... ✌️ #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2024 'Enjoy Golf has been a good horse to me although he's only won one race. I think I've had four seconds on him, which is always a bit concerning,' said Bowman. 'But his only go at Happy Valley was at 1,650m, which is too far, so he's an interesting runner and he's got to be a chance. And Prince Alex freshened up, a long time between runs from gate one – they're probably the chances, those two.' While Bowman is counting down the days until his flight out of Hong Kong, he admits he'll likely get itchy feet at some stage during the off-season and potentially look to do some riding while travelling. 'I can't wait to get away. It's been a long year for everyone but in saying that, I feel like I'm finishing the year full of enthusiasm,' he said. 'For me, two months [off] is a bit too long, but it is what it is. We'll have a break, freshen up and come back and hit the ground running. If the opportunity arises, I'll look to ride in Europe, whether in the UK or possibly France.'
