Abang Johari launches Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap
He said the roadmap will serve as a compass that was designed to navigate both opportunities
and challenges as the state accelerated transformation into a regionally recognised clean hydrogen powerhouse.
"While we have made impressive strides, the journey is far from over," he said in his keynote address at the Hydrogen Economy Forum 2025 here.
He said that scaling hydrogen to commercial levels required massive capital investment, advanced technology, skilled talent, and long-term policy stability.
He outlined the state's ambition to become a regional and global leader in the hydrogen economy by leveraging its abundant natural resources and growing expertise in clean energy technologies.
"Sarawak is not merely adapting to the future, we are shaping it," he said in his address to an audience comprising government leaders, industry players and energy experts.
He emphasised that the forum marked a crucial milestone in Sarawak's journey towards building a sustainable and resilient energy future.
He presented a comprehensive strategy based on four key pillars: renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen.
He said these pillars would guide the state's efforts to diversify its energy mix while driving decarbonisation.
On renewable energy, Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak's strengths in hydropower, solar and biomass, noting its capacity to export electricity to West Kalimantan and plans to expand exports to Sabah, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.
"Sarawak controls nearly 60 per cent of Malaysia's natural gas reserves and is committed to utilising this resource wisely to support both domestic needs and export-driven industrial growth," he said.
"Our leadership in carbon capture and storage is also significant, with the state holding over 65 per cent of the nation's geological storage potential as a key asset in our national decarbonisation initiatives," he added.
On hydrogen, the premier recalled that Sarawak began investing in green hydrogen as early as 2017, adding: "Today, it leads major projects such as H2ornbill and H2biscus, both progressing towards completion of their Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) by the end of the year."
He announced the establishment of a dedicated hydrogen hub in Kuching to accelerate research, development and investment in this emerging sector, positioning Sarawak at the centre of hydrogen innovation in Southeast Asia.
The premier also referred to the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Ordinance, passed on November 11, 2024, and enforced on March 1, 2025, which provided a clear legal framework for regulating hydrogen-related activities in Sarawak, including provisions for enforcement, safety and sustainability.
He further revealed plans to launch the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, describing it as a strategic compass to guide the state's development and aspirations to become a global leader in clean hydrogen by 2035.
Abang Johari expressed optimism that ongoing technological breakthroughs would continue to reduce production costs. He acknowledged Sarawak's collaboration with Petronas, through which the energy required to produce one kilogram of hydrogen has been successfully reduced from 60kW to just 38kW.
He noted the applications of hydrogen in Sarawak's public transport sector, including hydrogen-powered buses and ongoing test of the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system.

Sarawak to be first state with diversity unit
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg at the launch of a women's day celebration in Kuching today. (Ukas pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will be the first state in the country to set up a diversity, equality and inclusivity unit, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed. The unit, known as D2EI for diversity, equality, equity and inclusivity, will be set up in the state department of women and family development, The Borneo Post reported. Abang Johari said the D2EI principles are in line with his administration's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity. He also believes that these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. For now, Abang Johari said the state government hopes to boost the involvement of women in high-growth sectors, by providing support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and startup assistance. 'We have asked the banks to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he was quoted as saying. This is not the first time Sarawak has introduced progressive policies. In 2023, it became the first state in Malaysia to have an ombudsman law. DEI policies, whose origins date back to the US civil rights movement, made headlines after US president Donald Trump issued an executive order after taking office in January directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.

Abang Jo to launch Sarawak's ‘White House' on Monday
Sarawak's new administrative complex in Petra Jaya has been nicknamed the Sarawak White House for its resemblance to the White House in Washington. (Dayak Daily pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak's new administrative complex in Petra Jaya, dubbed Sarawak's 'White House', will have its soft opening by state premier Abang Johari Openg on Monday (Aug 4), coinciding with his 75th birthday. The building will serve as the new administrative hub for the state government. Abang Johari said the building is not a residence but will function solely as a facility for government administration, Dayak Daily reported. He said the building's design reflects Sarawak's aspirations to be a region with sound governance, strong institutions and global outlook. An official name for the building has yet to be announced, but it has been popularly called Sarawak's 'White House' for its resemblance to the residence and workplace of the US president in Washington. Situated on the hills of Petra Jaya, overlooking Sungai Sarawak and near the state assembly building, the complex comprises a three-storey building flanked by two double-storey structures on either side.

The unit, which adopts the D2EI theme of Sarawak's Women's Day 2025, embodies the state's commitment to a people-centred development approach that upholds fairness in diversity regardless of geography, gender, ethnicity, religion or ability. At the Sarawak Women's Day 2025 celebration held at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today, Abang Johari said the state government intends to strengthen women's involvement in high-growth sectors. 'This includes support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and start-up assistance. We have grants from the government and the state holds some influence in Affin Bank as a major stakeholder. 'We have asked the bank to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he said. He added the D2EI principles align with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which also emphasises inclusivity, and believed these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. Meanwhile, Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry is working with key organisations including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 30% Club, and the Asian Women Leadership University College (AWLUC) to further strengthen the direction and implementation of the D2EI initiative. In this regard, she said the ministry is seeking support and sponsorship from the Sarawak government to fund studies for selected individuals to pursue the Master of Arts in Leadership Development programme at AWLUC, which costs RM105,000 in total (RM35,000 per student for the entire duration). Abang Johari approved the request, stating that the funding would be disbursed through Yayasan Sarawak. Also present were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; and Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
