Today's NYT Strands Puzzle: Hints, Spangram And Answers For Wednesday, August 13th

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times' stable of puzzle games. It's a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we're given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day's theme.

I found PSYCHO first, because it's one of Alfred Hitchcock's films I'm more familiar with and so searched for a P and then followed it to the S and Y and so forth. ROPE was right next to it, and then to the other side, VERTIGO. All great films, though I still laugh at how cheesy the epilogue of PSYCHO is. I found FILMTITLE next, today's oddly-positioned spangram. Then TOPAZ and LIFEBOAT at the top, though I don't think I've seen either of those films. At last, NOTORIOUS, which I've seen but it's been so long I couldn't tell you the plot. Only that it stars Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. What's your favorite Hitchcock movie? Mine is Rear Window.

The category types in today's Connections puzzle Here are spoiler-free hints that describe the type of each category in today's Connections: Yellow category - Synonyms. Green category - Synonyms. Blue category - Similar nouns. Purple category - Fill in the blank. Hints for the themes in today's Connections puzzle Here are some spoiler-free hints for the groupings in today's Connections: Yellow category - They say 'you're good to go.' Green category - You only get a few of these, so make the most of them. Blue category - What the front desk will tell you about at check-in. Purple category - Time devices. (The full solution is a bit further down.) A heads up about the tricky parts There's nothing on the board today about billiards, despite words like CUE, POOL, and BREAK. BREAKFAST is usually preceded by 'continental.' SHOT belongs in a phrase like, 'We've only got one SHOT at this.' What are the categories in today's Connections? Yellow: INDICATION Green: OPPORTUNITY Blue: HOTEL AMENITIES Purple: WORDS BEFORE 'WATCH' DOUBLE BEWARE: THE SOLUTION IS BELOW Ready to learn the answers to today's Connections puzzle? I give them all away below. What are the yellow words in today's Connections? The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today's yellow group is INDICATION and the words are: CUE, NOD, PROMPT, SIGNAL. What are the green words in today's Connections? The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is OPPORTUNITY and the words are: BREAK, CHANCE, OPENING, SHOT. What are the blue words in today's Connections? The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue category is HOTEL AMENITIES and the words are: BREAKFAST, PARKING, POOL, WI-FI. What are the purple words in today's Connections? The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today's purple category is WORDS BEFORE 'WATCH' and the words are: DIGITAL, POCKET, STOP, WRIST. How I solved today's Connections WRIST and POCKET make me think there might be a watch category. DIGITAL and STOP work there, too. 🟪 CHANCE, SHOT, and OPENING could be words referring to opportunity. Not sure what the fourth might be. Maybe BREAKFAST, POOL, WI-FI, and PARKING go together as amenities at a hotel. 🟦 NOD, PROMPT, and SIGNAL probably all go together as words describing an indicator. CUE fits there, too. 🟨 That means BREAK is the one that goes with SHOT, CHANCE, and OPENING. 🟩 How to play Connections I have a full guide to playing Connections, but here's a refresher on the rules: First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on). Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll get a chance to try again. You win when you've correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed. How to win Connections The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don't hit 'submit' until you've confirmed that your group of four contains only those four things. If you're stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed 'Whistler's Mother,' you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn't fit any of the obvious themes, either. Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass for local homeless people, invites them to lunch at summer villa
In his homily, Leo celebrated the 'fire of charity' that had brought them together. Leo is expected to wrap up his vacation Tuesday and return to the Vatican, but there are indications he plans to use the Castel Gandolfo retreat regularly as an escape from Rome, resuming the tradition that Pope Francis had eschewed in favor of staycations at the Vatican. Leo's older brother, John Prevost, told NBC's Chicago affiliate that the pope found the getaway relaxing and had actually hoped to read a book during his vacation — the pope likes legal thrillers — but hadn't found the time. He did, however, make use of the estate's tennis court and swimming pool, he said. Prevost, who speaks daily with the pope to compare notes on the New York Times daily Wordle puzzle, said he understood the thing Leo missed most about being pope was not being able to drive. Advertisement 'Driving to him is totally relaxing,' Prevost said, adding that when they were together, his little brother would always insist on driving himself. 'Absolutely, because otherwise then he would criticize my driving,' Prevost said, chuckling. In the interview, Prevost revealed the pope's favorite pizza — pepperoni — and candy: Peeps.
