Lower Illovo residents protest homeless shelter revival
RESIDENTS of Wards 97 and 109 are ramping up their opposition to the reopening of the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter in Lower Illovo. The eThekwini Municipality is upgrading the facility into a 400-bed halfway house intended to support homeless individuals and those recovering from substance abuse.

Situated on the P197 road in Ward 109, adjacent to Lower Illovo Primary School, the R13.6m project is still under construction. Once completed, it will offer temporary accommodation along with health screenings, meals, social work support, and drug rehabilitation services, with the goal of eventually reintegrating residents into their communities.
A similar initiative proposed for Durban's CBD was cancelled following concerns about its potential impact on tourism and the city's image. In contrast, residents of Lower Illovo say they were caught off guard by the revival of the Sakhithemba facility.
Although the shelter was originally established years ago and is appropriately zoned, community members insist that updated public consultations should have been conducted. In 2009, the Young Men's Christian Association operated the site as a halfway house for drug addicts, but later abandoned it due to a lack of funding.
Residents of Lower Illovo and Amanzimtoti claim they were excluded from the decision-making process regarding the shelter's reopening. A petition submitted to the municipal manager last year has reportedly received no response.
Austin Gounden, chairperson of the Lower Illovo Neighbourhood Watch, expressed fears about a potential rise in crime.
'We believe in helping others, but not like this, not in our community,' he said.
Resident Dineshni Govender raised concerns about the shelter's proximity to the primary school, saying it could pose a safety risk to learners. eThekwini executive committee member, André Beetge, acknowledged that while the site is zoned for such a facility, the community should have been notified of the project revival. Despite construction already being underway, municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said public consultations are still planned. A community meeting open to Wards 97 and 109 residents will be held on May 25 at 14:00 at Lower Illovo Primary School to discuss the issue and chart a way forward.

Region B director is ready to accelerate service delivery
Marking a year as director for Region B, Sello Lemao reflected on his journey so far. A journey through collaboration and a vision to deliver services across Johannesburg's Region B. This collaborative spirit, Lemao says, is what has helped move Region B into what he calls its: 'Acceleration phase'. 'We've gained experience over the past year, and now, we're going to accelerate. We have the mechanisms, such as Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) and accelerated service delivery, and with our high impact service delivery in place, we're working with multiple entities to tackle issues in various wards. Today, we can tell you where a pothole needs to be patched before it even becomes a complaint.' He added that the relationship between the city and residents is mutual. When communities are engaged, service delivery is sharper. 'In areas where the community is active, issues are reported and resolved much quicker, but in areas where there's little engagement, problems, like potholes, linger longer than they should. We want the residents to tell us where the problems are. We're ready to respond.' Lemao admitted that there is still a lot to do, but he believes that his department is on the right track, and ready to move forward to improve service delivery in Region B. Local church donates school uniforms
Learners from N'wa-Vangani Primary School in Mamelodi East have been showered with school uniforms to keep warm this winter. The generous donation was made by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in SA, Mamelodi East Parish, to more than 50 learners on Friday. Reverend Thembani Mayayise from the church said the learners received school uniforms, including belts for the school boys. Mayayisa said the donations are part of the church community social investment project, together with their partners, Genesis Corporate Solutions. The church project is not only aimed at schools but is for the church and the community at large. 'We are grateful for the school to allow us to contribute towards the well-being of the learners at the school,' he said. 'We brought jerseys, trousers, shirts, shoes and belts for the learners who desperately need these school uniforms to keep warm in winter. 'We have partnered with Genesis to co-operate with helping to buy the school uniforms,' said Mayayisa. He said this is not a once-off donation and they are planning to come back next year to do more for the school, especially in winter. Learners were encouraged to take their schoolwork seriously and strive to perform exceptionally well in their studies. Matimu Mandlhazi from Genesis Corporate Solutions said, 'We believe in empowering young children and also making an impact in the educational sector. 'We have decided to partner with the church with a contribution of R30 000.' Mandlhazi said they are looking forward to seeing the project grow from strength to strength, and they wish to do more in future for the school. A member of the school governing body at N'wa-Vangani Primary School, Millicent Maluleka, thanked the church and its partners for the generous donations. Maluleka said the donations of school uniforms came just at the right time. She said giving is a good sign of love and also teaches their learners to give. 'We have learners who come from disadvantaged families, and these donations will uplift the spirit of learners,' said Maluleka. Search for missing aircraft ends in tragedy
The search for a missing aircraft has ended in tragedy after it was recovered, and the three people aboard found dead. According to reports, the aircraft departed Virginia Airport north of Durban at around 3pm on Sunday but failed to reach its alternate destination. It was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. The KZN Department of Transport said an investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. 'The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) informed us that they will be handing over the matter to the SAPS Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation,' said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. 'In particular, we are in touch with Zama Biyela, mother of the late student pilot Nqobile Biyela. 'This is the most difficult period for her and the entire family. 'Losing such a young, great leader with a promising career in the aviation industry, under such circumstances, is not only tragic but devastating,' said Duma.
