Local church donates school uniforms
Learners from N'wa-Vangani Primary School in Mamelodi East have been showered with school uniforms to keep warm this winter.
The generous donation was made by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in SA, Mamelodi East Parish, to more than 50 learners on Friday.
Reverend Thembani Mayayise from the church said the learners received school uniforms, including belts for the school boys.
Mayayisa said the donations are part of the church community social investment project, together with their partners, Genesis Corporate Solutions.
The church project is not only aimed at schools but is for the church and the community at large.
'We are grateful for the school to allow us to contribute towards the well-being of the learners at the school,' he said.
'We brought jerseys, trousers, shirts, shoes and belts for the learners who desperately need these school uniforms to keep warm in winter.
'We have partnered with Genesis to co-operate with helping to buy the school uniforms,' said Mayayisa.
He said this is not a once-off donation and they are planning to come back next year to do more for the school, especially in winter.
Learners were encouraged to take their schoolwork seriously and strive to perform exceptionally well in their studies.
Matimu Mandlhazi from Genesis Corporate Solutions said, 'We believe in empowering young children and also making an impact in the educational sector.
'We have decided to partner with the church with a contribution of R30 000.'
Mandlhazi said they are looking forward to seeing the project grow from strength to strength, and they wish to do more in future for the school.
A member of the school governing body at N'wa-Vangani Primary School, Millicent Maluleka, thanked the church and its partners for the generous donations.
Maluleka said the donations of school uniforms came just at the right time.
She said giving is a good sign of love and also teaches their learners to give.
'We have learners who come from disadvantaged families, and these donations will uplift the spirit of learners,' said Maluleka.
She added that the generous donations will also help them improve their school work.

Search for missing aircraft ends in tragedy
The search for a missing aircraft has ended in tragedy after it was recovered, and the three people aboard found dead. According to reports, the aircraft departed Virginia Airport north of Durban at around 3pm on Sunday but failed to reach its alternate destination. It was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. The KZN Department of Transport said an investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. 'The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) informed us that they will be handing over the matter to the SAPS Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation,' said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. 'In particular, we are in touch with Zama Biyela, mother of the late student pilot Nqobile Biyela. 'This is the most difficult period for her and the entire family. 'Losing such a young, great leader with a promising career in the aviation industry, under such circumstances, is not only tragic but devastating,' said Duma. Elderly raise funds at annual fair
Residents of Methodist Homes' Queenswood Home held their annual fair this past weekend, where visitors were treated to 30 different stalls for their various shopping needs. The fair offered the attendees a range of food, clothing and crafts to choose from, including a pudding table, a tea garden and white elephant table, as well as knitting circles. Queenswood Home has been a cherished sanctuary for retirees since 1974, and the fair comes around once a year during the winter to help raise funds for the home. It currently accommodates two different sections, one being independent living with 50 units and a care centre where there are another 26 beds. The village manager, Hannetjie Kelderman, says that today's economy has made fairs such as these all the more important, as the home doesn't receive any government assistance. 'The fair definitely helps with raising funds to help make the stay of the residents more comfortable, and they decide what happens with the money raised today. They will come to me and say, 'This is what we want to do with the money'. But we're definitely getting to a place where people can't afford to live in old-age homes, and we have to find ways to make it easier for them,' Kelderman says. She says community members must foster a stronger sense of community, and it doesn't have to be through financial means, but can be through volunteering your time.
